Title: Strategies Used by Students with Learning Disabilities for Reasoning about Slope.
Students with learning disabilities (LD), like other learners, show a range of resources and strategies for reasoning about complex concepts in mathematics. This study comes from a project in which a group of five ninth-grade students with LD participated in a once-weekly tutoring program with university pre-service teachers. We asked, what strategies did students use to reason about slope? Students drew upon knowledge of concepts related to constant covariation when given the opportunity. This study suggests that students with LD have rich conceptual knowledge that can be leveraged to improve their success in Algebra.  more » « less

  1. Inclusive classrooms aim to promote the social participation of children with learning difficulties (LD). Research shows that children without LD view it as fair to include their peers with LD into the classroom community. Still, children with LD often face social exclusion. This study addressed this gap by investigating how children reason about challenging LD-based exclusion. One objective was to document the distinction between children’s personal goals and their expectations of their peers’ goals when confronting exclusionary behavior toward a peer with LD. Swiss elementary school children (N= 349, 7–13 years, 48% female) were introduced to a scenario about a classmate with LD who was excluded from a group task. They reasoned whether and why they would intervene and what reactions they expected from the group and the perpetrator. The results showed that the vast majority of childrenpersonallyintended to intervene, primarily for moral reasons. However, children’s expectations about their peers were different. They expected a wide range of responses, including negative group dynamics and LD-stereotypes. Higher perceptions of inclusive classroom norms were related to fewer expectations of negative group dynamics. Moreover, older children’s reasoning was more differentiated and included multiple concerns simultaneously. These findings inform strategies for creating inclusive classrooms.

  2. This paper describes a study about which medium best introduces programming concepts to those without programming knowledge, a blocked coded robot (Cozmo) or online Scratch coding. Participants were taught basic coding concepts such as if statements and while loops in both instances and given a task to test their newly attained knowledge. Results showed that even though Scratch coding on computers was more successful as a tool to teach students programming concepts, the Cozmo robot brought more engagement and interest to the students.

  3. Creative exercises (CEs) consist of open-ended prompts to which students provide a series of relevant, distinct, and accurate statements, thus requiring that students make connections between concepts. In this study, CEs were incorporated into a one-semesterSurvey of Organic Chemistrycourse to identify what connections between chemistry concepts students made and what incorrect conceptions or misconceptions about chemistry students held. Students (N= 79) enrolled in the course first completed a practice CE as an in-class group activity followed by individually responding to a CE bonus problem on each of their four course exams. The number of different concepts students addressed for each CE increased over the semester, indicating that students made increasing content connections about course material; however, misconceptions about early concepts, such as nomenclature and assigning configurations, remained consistent throughout the semester. Furthermore, the CEs were found to be instrumental in shedding light on misconceptions and knowledge structures of students across varying performance levels. Overall, students reported that they viewed the CEs favorably and would like to see CEs incorporated in future courses.

  4. This research study examines the impact of a guest speaker intervention on college students enrolled in criminal justice courses at a mid-sized university in California. Students in the study attended guest speaker presentations ranging from probation officers, correctional officers, academics, and public defenders. Students in the study were required to complete a pre-and post-survey throughout the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters that examined the students’ agreeableness, confidence, and knowledge with regard to their experiences with attending guest speaker opportunities and their knowledge about career pathways and academic concepts while pursuing a college degree. The results from this study indicate that many students find guest speaker opportunities to be both beneficial for advancing their knowledge of the criminal justice system and confidence in pursuing a career in criminal justice.

  5. t has been shown that active learning strategies are effective in teaching complex STEM concepts. In this study, we developed and implemented a laboratory experiment for teaching the concepts of Boolean logic gates, molecular beacon probes, molecular computing, DNA logic gates, microRNA, and molecular diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma, which are related to DNA molecular computing, an interdisciplinary cutting-edge research technology in biochemistry, synthetic biology, computer science, and medicine. The laboratory experience takes about 110–140 min and consists of a multiple-choice pretest (15 min), introductory lecture (20 min), wet laboratory experiment (60–90 min), and a post-test (15 min). Students are tasked to experimentally construct three molecular logic circuits made of DNA oligonucleotides and use them for the fluorescence-based detection of microRNA markers related to diagnostics of hepatocellular carcinoma. The class was taught to undergraduate students from freshman to senior academic levels majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, and biomedical sciences. Students were engaged during the session and motivated to learn more about the research technology. A comparison of students’ scores on the pretest and post-test demonstrated improvement in knowledge of the concepts taught. Visual observation of the fluorescence readout led to a straightforward interpretation of the results. The laboratory experiment is portable; it uses inexpensive nontoxic reagents and thus can be employed outside a laboratory room for outreach and science popularization purposes.
