Title: Designing a System to Facilitate Intergenerational Story Sharing and Preservation for Older Adults
My PhD research focuses on intergenerational story sharing for older adults, which is conducted in a Research-through-Design manner. It includes five iterations: It started from an exploration prototype Interactive Gallery (1st iteration), and its findings helped to narrow down my research area and define my research question. To answer it, the 2nd iteration was continued, which was a co-design process of developing prototypes. 3rd and 4th iteration focused on older adults' life stories and memento stories respectively. While the 5th iteration is in the process, which aims to facilitate intergenerational story sharing and preservation in a sustainable manner.  more » « less

We present results from a qualitative study involving eight intergenerational families (27 participants) to understand how a family tracking intervention can help support care among intergenerational family members. Our findings show that family members communicate and stay aware of each other's' health through shared fitness data and conversations triggered by fitness sharing. We identified different challenges and preferences among the three age groups in our study: older adults enjoyed family fitness sharing but often encountered various technical challenges, the middle-aged group served as a key person to care for the rest of the family members, and the young generation could not fully engage in fitness sharing due to their busy schedule and privacy concerns. These findings suggest the design of family fitness sharing to account for the age differences in intergenerational families and support the unique needs of family fitness sharing.

Recruiting older adults for research studies is a challenging endeavor. We conducted an interview to understand older adults’ preferences and expectations, with the goal of building a recommender system to support the selection of suitable research studies. Our findings suggest that sharing the results of the studies they participated in would motivate older adults to participate in more studies and give them a feeling of self-accomplishment and belonging. We list 15 design implications based on our user research and present a prototype system based on these design implications.

  3. Community intergenerational mentorship offers an opportunity to address older adults' social isolation while providing valuable one-on-one or small group learning experiences for elementary school students. Current organizations that support this kind of engagement focus on in-person visits that place the burden of logistics and transportation on the older adult. However, as older adults become less independent while aging, coming to schools in person becomes more challenging. We present a qualitative analysis of current intergenerational mentorship practices to understand opportunities for technology to expand access to this experience. We highlight elements critical for building successful mentorship: the importance of relationship building between older adults and children during mentoring activities, the skills mentors acquired to carry out mentoring activities, and support needed from teachers and schools. We contribute a rich description of current intergenerational mentorship practices and provide insights for opportunities for novel HCI technologies in this context.

This is the story of a career in theoretical chemistry during a time of dramatic changes in the field due to phenomenal growth in the availability of computational power. It is likewise the story of the highly gifted graduate students and postdoctoral fellows that I was fortunate to mentor throughout my career. It includes reminiscences of the great mentors that I had and of the exciting collaborations with both experimentalists and theorists on which I built much of my research. This is an account of the developments of exciting scientific disciplines in which I was involved: vibrational spectroscopy, molecular reaction mechanisms and dynamics, e.g., in atmospheric chemistry, and the prediction of new, exotic molecules, in particular noble gas molecules. From my very first project to my current work, my career in science has brought me the excitement and fascination of research. What a wonderful pursuit!

  5. People often do not receive the reactions they desire when they use social networking sites to share data collected through personal tracking tools like Fitbit, Strava, and Swarm. Although some people have found success sharing with close connections or in finding online communities, most audiences express limited interest and rarely respond. We report on findings from a human-centered design process undertaken to examine how tracking tools can better support people in telling their story using their data. 23 formative interviews contribute design goals for telling stories of accomplishment, including a need to include relevant data. We implement these goals in Yarn, a mobile app that offers structure for telling stories of accomplishment around training for running races and completing Do-It-Yourself projects. 21 participants used Yarn for 4 weeks across two studies. Although Yarn’s structure led some participants to include more data or explanation in the moments they created, many felt like the structure prevented them from telling their stories in the way they desired. In light of participant use, we discuss additional challenges to using personal data to inform and target an interested audience
