My PhD research focuses on intergenerational story sharing for older adults, which is conducted in a Research-through-Design manner. It includes five iterations: It started from an exploration prototype Interactive Gallery (1st iteration), and its findings helped to narrow down my research area and define my research question. To answer it, the 2nd iteration was continued, which was a co-design process of developing prototypes. 3rd and 4th iteration focused on older adults' life stories and memento stories respectively. While the 5th iteration is in the process, which aims to facilitate intergenerational story sharing and preservation in a sustainable manner.

            This is the story of a career in theoretical chemistry during a time of dramatic changes in the field due to phenomenal growth in the availability of computational power. It is likewise the story of the highly gifted graduate students and postdoctoral fellows that I was fortunate to mentor throughout my career. It includes reminiscences of the great mentors that I had and of the exciting collaborations with both experimentalists and theorists on which I built much of my research. This is an account of the developments of exciting scientific disciplines in which I was involved: vibrational spectroscopy, molecular reaction mechanisms and dynamics, e.g., in atmospheric chemistry, and the prediction of new, exotic molecules, in particular noble gas molecules. From my very first project to my current work, my career in science has brought me the excitement and fascination of research. What a wonderful pursuit!

            STEM programs: encouraging an early start with engineering designNancy Butler Songer, Associate Provost of STEM Education at the University of Utah, highlights the importance of introducing STEM programs to younger students. Fifty years ago, I was one of three girls (of fifty 11 and 12-year-olds) in the after-school Science Club (Figure 1). Equipped with my bicycle and a large butterfly net, my task was to gather and identify fifty different species of insects before school began again in the fall. Little did I know that this activity was a formative experience leading to a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education. My experience as a twelve-year-old is consistent with a wealth of research indicating that pre-teen interest in STEM fields, including Engineering, is a strong predictor of future careers. Research studies indicate that to increase the number of students pursuing engineering and science as a career goal, we must increase activities with engineering as a fundamental component before students reach their teenage years (Sneider & Ravel, 2021).more » « less

            As I write this in July 2020, I have no idea what the COVID-19 situation will be like when this September 2020 issue reaches your mailbox or your previewer. My typical advice is to prove exciting theorems. But in these times, all I can share are my hopes: that you'll each be safe and well (and that the medical profes- sion will create an effective vac- cine quickly enough that early in 2021 schools can return to fully in-person teaching); that you'll nd ways to, if a faculty member, help your students thrive even in the hybrid-mode-learning settings they'll probably nd themselves in for the fall semester; and that you'll (while staying careful and safe) nd time to (yes, here it comes) prove exciting theorems.more » « less
