Title: An information-theoretic approach to study hydrodynamic interactions in schooling fish
Understanding the role of hydrodynamic interactions in fish swimming may help explain why and how fish swim in schools. In this work, we designed controlled experiments to study fish swimming in a disturbed flow. Specifically, we recorded the tail beat frequency of a fish swimming in the presence of an actively-controlled airfoil pitching at varying frequencies. We propose an information-theoretic approach to quantify the influence of the motion of the pitching airfoil on the animal swimming. The theoretical framework developed in this work may inform future investigations on the mechanisms underlying schooling in groups.  more » « less

    The phenomenon of fish schooling - coordinated swimming of fish in polarized groups of specific spatial formations- is commonly observed in several species of fish. Fish schooling may even provide hydrodynamic advantages reducing the overall swimming cost of the group. To date, the role of hydrodynamics in coordinated swimming is not completely understood as it is difficult to separately study the role of hydrodynamic interaction from other forms of interaction between the fish. Here, we propose a statistical methodology based on information theoretic tools and flow velocity measurements, that can potentially tease out the hydrodynamic interaction pathways from visual and tactile ones. To avoid experimental confounds from bidirectional interactions and objectively understand cause-and-effect relationships, we design a robotic platform that mimics the behavior of two fish swimming in-line in a controlled setup inside a water channel. We examine the response of a flag to the fish-like unsteady wake generated by an actively pitching airfoil located upstream. We systematically quantify the passive hydrodynamic effect by studying the flapping motion of the flag located downstream of the airfoil in response to both periodic pitching and less predictable, random startling motion of the upstream airfoil. The study integrates experimental biomimetics with information theory to establish a deeper understanding of hydrodynamics in fish schooling.

  2. The anterior body of many fishes is shaped like an airfoil turned on its side. With an oscillating angle to the swimming direction, such an airfoil experiences negative pressure due to both its shape and pitching movements. This negative pressure acts as thrust forces on the anterior body. Here, we apply a high-resolution, pressure-based approach to describe how two fishes, bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirusRafinesque) and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalisMitchill), swimming in the carangiform mode, the most common fish swimming mode, generate thrust on their anterior bodies using leading-edge suction mechanics, much like an airfoil. These mechanics contrast with those previously reported in lampreys—anguilliform swimmers—which produce thrust with negative pressure but do so through undulatory mechanics. The thrust produced on the anterior bodies of these carangiform swimmers through negative pressure comprises 28% of the total thrust produced over the body and caudal fin, substantially decreasing the net drag on the anterior body. On the posterior region, subtle differences in body shape and kinematics allow trout to produce more thrust than bluegill, suggesting that they may swim more effectively. Despite the large phylogenetic distance between these species, and differences near the tail, the pressure profiles around the anterior body are similar. We suggest that such airfoil-like mechanics are highly efficient, because they require very little movement and therefore relatively little active muscular energy, and may be used by a wide range of fishes since many species have appropriately shaped bodies.

Abstract An experimental study was undertaken to evaluate the power extraction of an airfoil undergoing large amplitude pitching and heaving using a trailing edge flapping motion for the application of energy harvesting for steady flow over the airfoil. The airfoil was a NACA0015 design, pitching at the 1/3 chord position, with an actively controlled trailing edge flap hinged at the 2/3 chord location (chord length of c = 150mm and aspect ratio AR = 2, however end plates were used to simulate a two-dimensional airfoil). Data were obtained over a range of wind speeds corresponding to Reynolds numbers in the 30,000–60,000 range in a low-speed wind tunnel with turbulence intensities below 2%. The results are characterized using the reduced frequency, k = fc/U∞ over the range of 0.04–0.08, where f is the oscillating frequency in Hz, and U∞ is the freestream velocity. The pitching and heaving amplitudes are θ0 = 70° and h0 = 0.6c respectively, with a phase delay of 90°. Two trailing edge motion profiles are presented, examining the relative phase of trailing edge flap to the pitching phase. For each motion, a positive and negative case are considered. This is a total of 4 trailing edge motion profiles. Trailing edge motion amplitudes of 20° and 40° are compared and results contrasted. Direct transient force measurements were used to obtain the cycle variation of induced aerodynamic loads (lift coefficient) as well as the power output and efficiency. Results are used to identify the influence of trailing edge flap oscillations on the overall performance for energy harvesting, with a maximum efficiency increase of 21.3% and corresponding cycle averaged heaving power coefficient increase of 29.9% observed as a result of trailing edge motion.

  4. Fish schools are ubiquitous in marine life. Although flow interactions are thought to be beneficial for schooling, their exact effects on the speed, energetics and stability of the group remain elusive. Recent numerical simulations and experimental models suggest that flow interactions stabilize in-tandem formations of flapping foils. Here, we employ a minimal vortex sheet model that captures salient features of the flow interactions among flapping swimmers, and we study the free swimming of a pair of in-line swimmers driven with identical heaving or pitching motions. We find that, independent of the flapping mode, heaving or pitching, the follower passively stabilizes at discrete locations in the wake of the leader, consistent with the heaving foil experiments, but pitching swimmers exhibit tighter and more cohesive formations. Further, in comparison to swimming alone, pitching motions increase the energetic efficiency of the group while heaving motions result in a slight increase in the swimming speed. A deeper analysis of the wake of a single swimmer sheds light on the hydrodynamic mechanisms underlying pairwise formations. These results recapitulate that flow interactions provide a passive mechanism that promotes school cohesion, and afford novel insights into the role of the flapping mode in controlling the emergent properties of the school.

Fish locomotion emerges from diverse interactions among deformable structures, surrounding fluids and neuromuscular activations, i.e. fluid–structure interactions (FSI) controlled by fish's motor systems. Previous studies suggested that such motor-controlled FSI may possess embodied traits. However, their implications in motor learning, neuromuscular control, gait generation, and swimming performance remain to be uncovered. Using robot models, we studied the embodied traits in fish-inspired swimming. We developed modular robots with various designs and used central pattern generators (CPGs) to control the torque acting on robot body. We used reinforcement learning to learn CPG parameters for maximizing the swimming speed. The results showed that motor frequency converged faster than other parameters, and the emergent swimming gaits were robust against disruptions applied to motor control. For all robots and frequencies tested, swimming speed was proportional to the mean undulation velocity of body and caudal-fin combined, yielding an invariant, undulation-based Strouhal number. The Strouhal number also revealed two fundamental classes of undulatory swimming in both biological and robotic fishes. The robot actuators were also demonstrated to function as motors, virtual springs and virtual masses. These results provide novel insights in understanding fish-inspired locomotion.
