Title: A simple and scalable pre-lithiation approach for high energy and low cost lithium ion sulfur batteries
Sulfur-polyacrylonitrile (S-PAN) composite has been developed as a novel composite cathode material to address many issues with conventional Li-S batteries (LSBs). In this study, a freestanding S-PAN-CNT composite is first developed as the cathode material for LSBs, which is capable to deliver a high specific capacity of 1458 mAh g-1 at 0.2C and a desirable high-rate performance of 1097 mAh g-1 at 2.0 C. Furthermore, a Li2S-PAN-CNT cathode is obtained via in-situ direct pre-lithiation of S-PAN-CNT composite, which exhibits an even improved discharge capacity, cycling performance, and rate capability. Lastly, we develop Li-ion sulfur full batteries based on both S-PAN-CNT and Li2S-PAN-CNT cathode. The excellent electrochemical performance and corresponding theoretical estimation both demonstrate that the proposed system as a promising metal-free Li-ion battery with a high specific capacity, good cycle life, and low cost.  more » « less

  1. In this study, we are reporting the impact of the incorporation of ferroelectric nanoparticles (FNPs), such as BaTiO3 (BTO), BiFeO3 (BFO), Bi4NdTi3Fe0.7Ni0.3O15 (BNTFN), and Bi4NdTi3Fe0.5Co0.5O15 (BNTFC), as well as the mass loading of sulfur to fabricated solvent-free sulfur/holey graphene-carbon black/polyvinylidene fluoride (S/FNPs/CBhG/PVDF) composite electrodes to achieve high areal capacity for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. The dry-press method was adopted to fabricate composite cathodes. The hG, a conductive and lightweight scaffold derived from graphene, served as a matrix to host sulfur and FNPs for the fabrication of solvent-free composites. Raman spectra confirmed the dominant hG framework for all the composites, with strong D, G, and 2D bands. The surface morphology of the fabricated cathode system showed a homogeneous distribution of FNPs throughout the composites, confirmed by the EDAX spectra. The observed Li+ ion diffusion coefficient for the composite cathode started at 2.17 × 10−16 cm2/s (S25(CBhG)65PVDF10) and reached up to the highest value (4.15 × 10−15 cm2/s) for S25BNTFC5(CBhG)60PVDF10. The best discharge capacity values for the S25(CBhG)65PVDF10 and S25BNTFC5(CBhG)60PVDF10 composites started at 1123 mAh/gs and 1509 mAh/gs and dropped to 612 mAh/gs and 572 mAh/gs, respectively, after 100 cycles; similar behavior was exhibited by the other composites that were among the best. These are better values than those previously reported in the literature. The incorporation of ferroelectric nanoparticles in the cathodes of Li-S batteries reduced the rapid formation of polysulfides due to their internal electric fields. The areal capacity for the S25(CBhG)65PVDF10 composites was 4.84 mAh/cm2 with a mass loading of 4.31 mgs/cm2, while that for the S25BNTFC5(CBhG)60PVDF10 composites was 6.74 mAh/cm2 with a mass loading of 4.46 mgs/cm2. It was confirmed that effective FNP incorporation within the S cathode improves the cycling response and stability of cathodes, enabling the high performance of Li-S batteries.

  2. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries suffer from poor utilization of active material and short cycle life due to the complicated multi-step reaction mechanisms. Herein, three conditional cycling methods, i.e. asymmetrical cycling, constant voltage (CV) discharge cycling, and partial cycling are designed in order to increase the cyclability of Li-S batteries. It is found that the solid deposition process that takes place during the lower plateau of discharge is the major limiting step for achieving high discharge capacity and cycle retention, and the cathode surface coverage can be deferred by applying an optimal discharge/charge rate and CV discharge cycling. The asymmetrical cycling renders a specific capacity of ca. 700 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles, 30% higher than that under symmetrical cycling, while applying a CV discharge cycling enables a full retention of target specific capacity of ca. 800 mAh g-1 over 50 cycles. The partial cycling with a low number of phase transformation steps and reduced surface coverage at the end of discharge/charge also enhances cyclability. This work paves the way for understanding and improving the cycling performance of Li-S batteries without increasing the cost of electrode design or changing the configuration of the cell.

  3. Beyond lithium-ion technologies, lithium−sulfur batteries stand out because of their multielectron redox reactions and high theoretical specific energy (2500 Wh kg−1). However, the intrinsic irreversible transformation of soluble lithium polysulfides to solid short-chain sulfur species (Li2S2 and Li2S) and the associated large volume change of electrode materials significantly impair the long-term stability of the battery. Here we present a liquid sulfur electrode consisting of lithium thiophosphate complexes dissolved in organic solvents that enable the bonding and storage of discharge reaction products without precipitation. Insights garnered from coupled spectroscopic and density functional theory studies guide the complex molecular design, complexation mechanism, and associated electrochemical reaction mechanism. With the novel complexes as cathode materials, high specific capacity (1425 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C) and excellent cycling stability (80% retention after 400 cycles at 0.5 C) are achieved at room temperature. Moreover, the highly reversible all-liquid electrochemical conversion enables excellent low temperature battery operability (>400 mAh g−1 at −40 °C and >200 mAh g−1 at −60 °C). This work opens new avenues to design and tailor the sulfur electrode for enhanced electrochemical performance across a wide operating temperature range.

  4. We demonstrated the efficient coupling of BiFeO3 (BFO) ferroelectric material within the carbon–sulfur (C-S) composite cathode, where polysulfides are trapped in BFO mesh, reducing the polysulfide shuttle impact, and thus resulting in an improved cyclic performance and an increase in capacity in Li-S batteries. Here, the built-in internal field due to BFO enhances polysulfide trapping. The observation of a difference in the diffusion behavior of polysulfides in BFO-coupled composites suggests more efficient trapping in BFO-modified C-S electrodes compared to pristine C-S composite cathodes. The X-ray diffraction results of BFO–C-S composite cathodes show an orthorhombic structure, while Raman spectra substantiate efficient coupling of BFO in C-S composites, in agreement with SEM images, showing the interconnected network of submicron-size sulfur composites. Two plateaus were observed at 1.75 V and 2.1 V in the charge/discharge characteristics of BFO–C-S composite cathodes. The observed capacity of ~1600 mAh g−1 in a 1.5–2.5 V operating window for BFO30-C10-S60 composite cathodes, and the high cyclic stability substantiate the superior performance of the designed cathode materials due to the efficient reduction in the polysulfide shuttle effect in these composite cathodes.

  5. The shuttling of polysulfides with sluggish redox kinetics has severely retarded the advancement of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. In this work oxygen-deficient titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has been investigated as a novel functional host for Li–S batteries. Experimental and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) studies reveal that oxygen vacancies help to reduce polysulfide shuttling and catalyze the redox kinetics of sulfur/polysulfides during cycling. Consequently, the resulting TiO 2 /S composite cathode manifests superior electrochemical properties in terms of high capacity (1472 mA h g −1 at 0.2C), outstanding rate capability (571 mA h g −1 at 2C), and excellent cycling properties (900 mA h g −1 over 100 cycles at 0.2C). The present strategy offers a viable way through vacancy engineering for the design and optimization of high-performance electrodes for advanced Li–S batteries and other electrochemical devices.
