Researchers in many disciplines are developing novel interactive smart learning objects like exercises and visualizations. Meanwhile, Learning Management Systems (LMS) and eTextbook systems are also becoming more sophisticated in their ability to use standard protocols to make use of third party smart learning objects. But at this time, educational tool developers do not always make best use of the interoperability standards and need exemplars to guide and motivate their development efforts. In this paper we present a case study where the two large educational ecosystems use the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standard to allow cross-sharing of their educational materials. At the end of our development process, Virginia Tech’s OpenDSA eTextbook system became able to import materials from Aalto University’s ACOS smart learning content server, such as python programming exercises and Parsons problems. Meanwhile, University of Pittsburgh’s Mastery Grids (which already uses the ACOS exercises) was made to support CodeWorkout programming exercises (a system already used within OpenDSA). Thus, four major projects in CS Education became inter-operable.

Database Query Analyzer Integration
This paper describes updates to Database Query Analyzer (DBQA) that increase its interoperability with other learning tools using the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) protocol. As a result, DBQA has been integrated with Mastery Grids and allows for integration with learning management systems.

Building information modeling (BIM) is facilitating a procedural change for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry to share information in all the phases of the life cycle of a building. It possesses great advantages in designing, analyzing, and documenting all physical and functional information of a building and construction project. Structural analysis is an integral part of the life cycle phases of building construction projects. The information needed for structural analysis originates from the architectural model, but the architectural model can be created without much consideration of structural analysis. Software tools used by architects and structural engineers are usually different and sustain information inconsistency and or missing information leading to software interoperability problems. As the first step towards addressing this issue, in this paper, the authors conducted a preliminary literature review in order to identify topics and trends on the BIM interoperability problem with a focus on the structural analysis domain, from both the theoretic perspective and the application perspective. Structural analysis is performed and discussed in the following sections to demonstrate interoperability problems and propose possible solutions.more » « less

piqtree is an easy to use, open-source Python package that directly exposes IQ-TREE’s phylogenetic inference engine. It offers Python functions for performing many of IQ-TREE’s capabilities including phylogenetic reconstruction, ultrafast bootstrapping, branch length optimisation, ModelFinder, rapid neighbour-joining, and more. By exposing IQ-TREE’s algorithms within Python, piqtree greatly simplifies the development of new phylogenetic workflows through seamless interoperability with other Python libraries and tools mediated by the cogent3 package. It also enables users to perform interactive analyses with IQ-TREE through, for instance, Jupyter notebooks. We present the key features available in the piqtree library and a small case study that showcases its interoperability. The piqtree library can be installed withpip install piqtree, with the documentation available at https://piqtree.readthedocs.io and source at https://github.com/iqtree/piqtree.more » « less

With the ever‐expanding toolkit of molecular viewers, the ability to visualize macromolecular structures has never been more accessible. Yet, the idiosyncratic technical intricacies across tools and the integration complexities associated with handling structure annotation data present significant barriers to seamless interoperability and steep learning curves for many users. The necessity for reproducible data visualizations is at the forefront of the current challenges. Recently, we introduced MolViewSpec (homepage:https://molstar.org/mol‐view‐spec/, GitHub project:https://github.com/molstar/mol‐view‐spec), a specification approach that defines molecular visualizations, decoupling them from the varying implementation details of different molecular viewers. Through the protocols presented herein, we demonstrate how to use MolViewSpec and its 3D view–building Python library for creating sophisticated, customized 3D views covering all standard molecular visualizations. MolViewSpec supports representations like cartoon and ball‐and‐stick with coloring, labeling, and applying complex transformations such as superposition to any macromolecular structure file in mmCIF, BinaryCIF, and PDB formats. These examples showcase progress towards reusability and interoperability of molecular 3D visualization in an era when handling molecular structures at scale is a timely and pressing matter in structural bioinformatics as well as research and education across the life sciences.more » « less

Monero has emerged as one of the leading cryptocurrencies with privacy by design. However, this comes at the price of reduced expressiveness and interoperability as well as severe scalability issues. First, Monero is restricted to coin exchanges among individual addresses and no further functionality is supported. Second, transactions are authorized by linkable ring signatures, a digital signature scheme used in Monero, hindering thereby the interoperability with virtually all the rest of cryptocurrencies that support different digital signature schemes. Third, Monero transactions require an on-chain footprint larger than other cryptocurrencies, leading to rapid ledger growth and thus scalability issues. This work extends Monero expressiveness and interoperability while mitigating its scalability issues. We present Dual Linkable Spontaneous Anonymous Group Signature for Ad Hoc Groups (DLSAG), a linkable ring signature scheme that enables for the first time non-interactive refund transactions natively in Monero: DLSAG can seamlessly be implemented along with other cryptographic tools already available in Monero such as commitments and range proofs. We formally prove that DLSAG provides the same security and privacy notions introduced in the original linkable ring signature [31] namely, unforgeability, signer ambiguity, and linkability. We have evaluated DLSAG and showed that it imposes even slightly lower computation and similar communication overhead than the current digital signature scheme in Monero, demonstrating its practicality. We further show how to leverage DLSAG to enable off-chain scalability solutions in Monero such as payment channels and payment-channel networks as well as atomic swaps and interoperable payments with virtually all cryptocurrencies available today. DLSAG is currently being discussed within the Monero community as an option for adoption as a key building block for expressiveness, interoperability, and scalability.more » « less
