Title: Enhanced Piezoresponse and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Fluorinated Self-Assembled Peptide Nanotubes
Self-assembled L,L-diphenylalanine (FF) nanostructures offer an attractive platform for photonics and nonlinear optics. The nonlinear optical (NLO) coefficients of FF nanotubes depend on the diameter of the tube [S. Khanra et al. Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 19(4), 3084–3093 (2017)]. To further enhance the NLO properties of FF, we search for structural modifications. Here, we report on the synthesis of fluorinated FF dipeptides by replacing one ortho-hydrogen atom in each of the phenyl groups of FF by a fluorine atom. Density-functional theoretical calculations yield insights into minimum energy conformers of fluorinated FF (Fl-FF). Fl-FF self-assembles akin to FF into micron-length tubes. The effects of fluorination are evaluated on the piezoelectric response and nonlinear optical properties. The piezoelectric d15 coefficient of Fl-FF is found to be more than 10 times higher than that of FF nanotubes, and the intensity of second harmonic generation (SHG) polarimetry from individual Fl-FF nanotubes is more than 20 times that of individual FF nanotubes. Furthermore, we obtain SHG images to compare the intensities of FF and Fl-FF tubes. This work demonstrates the potential of fluorine substitution in other self-assembled biomimetic peptides for enhancing nonlinear optical response and piezoelectricity.  more » « less

  1. The crystal structure of l-phenylalanyl l-phenylalanine (Phe-Phe, FF, a.k.a. diphenylalanine) is not merely noncentrosymmetric, but it is highly dipole parallel aligned. It is for this reason that FF is a nonlinear optical (NLO) material and exhibits strong second harmonic generation (SHG). Enhancement of the SHG response by ortho fluorination was demonstrated. Crystallization is nontrivial, and learning about the zwitterion structures in solution is important for the rational improvement of the crystallization process. Here, we present an NMR study of di-fluorinated FF (Phe(2-F)-Phe(2-F)) and mono-fluorinated FF isomers (Phe(2-F)-Phe and Phe-Phe(2-F)). The dipeptides were prepared by solid-phase synthesis and purified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Their 1H and 13C NMR spectra were recorded in partially deuterated water (10% D2O), and two-dimensional (2D) NMR techniques were employed for signal assignments. The unambiguous assignments are reported of all chemical shifts for the aliphatic H and C atoms and of the C atoms of the carboxylate, the amide carbonyl, the CF carbons, and of every arene C atom in each phenyl ring. The dipeptides are trans amides and intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the ammonium group and the amide carbonyl restricts the H3N–CH–C(O) geometry. We explored the rotational profile of the diphenylalanines as a function of the τ = ∠(C–N–C–CO2) dihedral angle at the SMD(B3LYP/6-31G*) level without and with specific hydration and report the associated Karplus curves J(θ) vs θ = ∠(H–N–C–H). The rotational profiles show a maximum of three stationary structures, and relative conformer stabilities of the free diphenylalanines show that the conformation found in the crystal M1 is the least stable among the three, M3 > M2M1. Specific water solvation makes all of the difference and adds a large competitive advantage to the water-bridged ion pair M1a. In fact, M1a becomes the most stable and dominant conformation for the parent diphenylalanine and mono1 F-FF and M1a becomes competitive with M3c for mono2 F-FF and di F-FF. Implications are discussed regarding the importance of the conformational preorganization of diphenylalanines in solution and the facility for their crystallization.

  2. Abstract Discovery of new materials with enhanced optical properties in the visible and UV‐C range can impact applications in lasers, nonlinear optics, and quantum optics. Here, the optical floating zone growth of a family of rare earth borates,RBa3(B3O6)3(R= Nd, Sm, Tb, Dy, and Er), with promising linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties is reported. Although previously identified to be centrosymmetric, the X‐ray analysis combined with optical second harmonic generation (SHG) assigns the noncentrosymmetricPspace group to these crystals. Characterization of linear optical properties reveals a direct bandgap of ≈5.61–5.72 eV and strong photoluminescence in both the visible and mid‐IR regions. Anisotropic linear and nonlinear optical characterization reveals both Type‐I and Type‐II SHG phase matchability, with the highest effective phase‐matched SHG coefficient of 1.2 pm V−1at 800‐nm fundamental wavelength (for DyBa3(B3O6)3), comparable to β‐BaB2O4(phase‐matchedd22≈ 1.9 pm V−1). Laser‐induced surface damage threshold for these environmentally stable crystals is 650–900 GW cm−2, which is four to five times higher than that of β‐BaB2O4, thus providing an opportunity to pump with significantly higher power to generate about six to seven times stronger SHG light. Since the SHG arises from disorder on the Ba‐site, significantly larger SHG coefficients may be realized by “poling” the crystals to align the Ba displacements. These properties motivate further development of this crystal family for laser and wide bandgap NLO applications.

  3. Abstract Superior infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are in urgent demand in the development of lasers and optical technologies for communications and computing. The critical challenge is to find a crystal with large non‐resonant phase‐matchable NLO coefficients and high laser damage threshold (LDTs) simultaneously, which however scale inversely. This work reports such a material, MgSiP2,that exhibits a large second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ofd14≈d36= 89 ± 5 pm V−1at 1550 nm fundamental wavelength, surpassing the commercial NLO crystals AgGaS2, AgGaSe2, and ZnGeP2. First principles theory reveals the polarizability and geometric arrangement of the [SiP4] tetrahedral units as the origin of this large nonlinear response. Remarkably, it also exhibits a high LDT value of 684 GW cm−2, which is six times larger than ZnGeP2and three times larger than CdSiP2. It has a wide transparency window of 0.53–10.35 µm, allowing broadband tunability. Further, it is Type I and Type II phase‐matchable with large effective SHG coefficients ofdeff,I≈80.2 pm V−1anddeff,II≈73.4 pm V−1. The outstanding properties of MgSiP2make it a highly attractive candidate for optical frequency conversion in the infrared.

  4. Noncentrosymmetric hybrid framework (HF) materials are an important system in discovering new practical second-order nonlinear optical materials. We calculated the second harmonic generation (SHG) response of a noncentrosymmetric (NCS) organic–inorganic HF compound, CuMoO3(p2c) (p2c = pyrazine-2-carboxylate) to find that it exhibits the largest SHG response among all known NCS HF materials with one-dimensional helical chains. Further atom response theory analysis revealed that the metal atoms Cu and Mo contribute much more strongly than do nonmetal atoms in determining the strength of the SHG response, which is a novel example in nonlinear optical materials known to date.

  5. Noncentrosymmetric (NCS) silicon phosphides have recently shown promise as nonlinear optical materials due to the balance of strong second harmonic generation (SHG) activity and large laser damage threshold (LDT) values. While arsenides of electropositive metals, such as Ba, Mg, Zn, and Cd were explored, no NLO properties for transition metal tetrel arsenides have yet been reported. IrSi 3 As 3 is a novel compound, isostructural to IrSi 3 P 3 , which allows a direct investigation on the impact of the heavier pnictogen on structural and optical properties. The direct bandgap is reduced from 1.8 eV for IrSi 3 P 3 to 1.55 eV for IrSi 3 As 3 . Unlike many NLO chalcogenides, IrSi 3 As 3 has a small bandgap without compromising the balance between SHG signal and high LDT values. IrSi 3 As 3 was found to outperform both its phosphide analogue IrSi 3 P 3 , as well as the state-of-the-art infrared SHG standard AgGaS 2 (AGS) in SHG activity and the LDT.
