Title: Making the Most of Science Seminars
Although guest speakers have been a part of our curriculum for several decades, in recent years we have adopted a system that allows us to maximize the benefit of these speakers for our students. We provide learning opportunities before, during, and after a seminar to enhance students' scientific comprehension. Our system begins with students reading peer-reviewed literature relevant to a future seminar. In class, students work cooperatively to answer guided questions about the article, which serves as a basis for a discussion of the article among the entire class. This preparation facilitates students' understanding, their engagement, and their awareness of effective presentation techniques. Finally, small-group discussions with the speaker can provide students knowledge about their curriculum, awareness of additional opportunities, and insight into the nature of science. Our system thus provides a series of learning opportunities that ensure student engagement with the material multiple times, resulting in a deeper understanding of scientific research and effective mechanisms to communicate it.  more » « less

    ABSTRACT Microbiology courses are often designed as either a lecture class with a laboratory component or a seminar-style class. Each type of course provides students with unique learning opportunities. Lab courses allow students to perform simple experiments that relate to fundamental concepts taught in the corresponding lectures, while seminar courses challenge students to read and discuss primary literature. Microbiology courses offering a combination of seminar-style discussions and laboratory procedures are rare. Our goal in the “Microbial Diversity and Pathogenesis” undergraduate course is to integrate experiences of a seminar class with those of a discovery-driven lab course, thereby strengthening students’ learning experiences through diversified didactic approaches. In the first half of the course, students read and discuss published peer-reviewed articles that cover major topics in both basic and applied microbiology, including antibiotic resistance, pathogenesis, and biotechnology applications. Complementing this primary literature, students perform microbiology experiments related to the topics covered in the readings. The assigned readings, discussions, and experiments provide a foundation in the second half of the course for inquiry-based exploratory research using student-designed transposon screens and selections. The course culminates in each student drafting a hypothesis-driven research proposal based on their literature review, their learned experimental techniques, and the preliminary data generated as a class. Through such first-hand experimental experience, students gain fundamental lab skills that are applicable beyond the realm of microbiology, such as sterile technique and learning how to support conclusions with scientific evidence. We observed a tremendous synergy between the seminar and lab aspects of our course. This unique didactic experience allows students to understand and connect primary literature to their experiments, while the discovery-driven aspect of this approach fosters active engagement of students with scientific research.

  2. Abstract

    An explosion of data available in the life sciences has shifted the discipline toward genomics and quantitative data science research. Institutions of higher learning have been addressing this shift by modifying undergraduate curriculums resulting in an increasing number of bioinformatics courses and research opportunities for undergraduates. The goal of this study was to explore how a newly designed introductory bioinformatics seminar could leverage the combination of in‐class instruction and independent research to build the practical skill sets of undergraduate students beginning their careers in the life sciences. Participants were surveyed to assess learning perceptions toward the dual curriculum. Most students had a neutral or positive interest in these topics before the seminar and reported increased interest after the seminar. Students had increases in confidence level in their bioinformatic proficiency and understanding of ethical principles for data/genomic science. By combining undergraduate research with directed bioinformatics skills, classroom seminars facilitated a connection between student's life sciences knowledge and emerging research tools in computational biology.

Equity-minded institutional transformation requires robust faculty learning.  Research has shown that the single most important factor in student success is faculty interaction.  Positive, supportive, and empowering faculty interaction is particularly important to the success of female students, poor and working class students, and students of color, but most faculty are not prepared to offer the kind of support that has been shown to be most effective for marginalized students.  If institutions are serious about equity and about transformation, then they are obligated to provide professional development that will support the learning necessary for faculty to fulfill these important roles and to support faculty financially or by buying their time to participate in it.  An effective way to do this is to align such professional development with the urgent needs of the campus and their related campus-wide initiatives.  This article describes a community of practice model of identity-conscious professional development that engages faculty in a scholarly approach to the science of learning and evidence-based teaching and curriculum development while at the same time insistently and consistently incorporating critical reflection on and exploration of how systems of power and oppression impact learning. We believe this faculty engagement is key to transforming our institution into a more equitable and inclusive learning environment for students and faculty alike.

Eight semesters of qualitative data, collected over four academic years, are presented from a project that resulted in the development of a student professional learning community of high-achieving, low-income engineering and engineering technology student veterans. In the context of this project, student veterans received academic, professional, and financial support that helped them to be successful in school and to prepare them for a career in the STEM workforce. As adult learners, students in this learning community were a vital part of the curriculum development which resulted in increasing the students’ interest and buy-in. Typically, adult learners have lower levels of engagement than tradition-age students due to their non-traditional status. However, by engaging students in the development of a seminar course which served as the foundation for the student learning community, the course curriculum addressed student needs while being built on faculty expertise. Focus groups were conducted at the end of each semester to determine if students perceived the course as an effective professional development intervention. The course was comprised of various guest speaker who addressed different topics related to engineering, and the course also addressed other topics of professional development. In addition to hearing from various guest speakers, students also learned critical professional skills including how to search for an internship and/or permanent position; how to develop a cover letter, resume, and follow-up letter; how to prepare for and respond to questions during interviews; how to present themselves, how to dress, eat and hold a professional conversation at a formal meal during an interview; and how to network and follow-up after meeting people professionally. The guest speakers, veterans themselves, were excited to present to these highly motivated student veterans and to share their stories, and in the process, they inspired this next generation of engineers and engineering technologists.
