Title: Middle School Students’ Social Media Use
Cyber bullying, digital identity, impact of digital footprints, and use of inappropriate social media are topics that are gaining attention in K-12 schools. As more schools and school districts are implementing 1-1 and “bring your own technology” initiatives, attention to these topics is becoming increasingly important. A total of 593 middle school students were surveyed about digital footprints and concerns about social media. The results show that 17% started using social media at age nine or younger, 40% accepted friend requests from people they do not know, and 40% reported that their parents did not monitor their social media use, which calls for the needs of cyber-security education. These middle school students reported using social media most often to connect with their friends, share pictures, and find out what others are doing. They indicated that Instagram (27%), SnapChat (25%) and YouTube (25%) were their most used social media sites. These students have concerns about social media due to inappropriate postings, getting hacked, getting their feelings hurt, lack of privacy, inappropriate pictures, bullying, negativity, and stalkers.   1. Digital citizenship is defined as using knowledge and skills to exhibit appropriate behavior online using digital technology. Two hundred and thirty-seven middle school students were surveyed about digital device use and perception of digital citizenship practices on cyberbullying, digital netiquette, digital footprint, digital privacy, and digital identity. Findings indicated that student use of mobile devices has increased, which has established the need for parental monitoring of the online behavior of their children. Only 55.3% of the surveyed students indicated parental monitoring of their internet/social media use, and only 37.1% of the students identified digital citizenship as being taught in their schools. Seventy-three percent of the students indicated having never been cyberbullied, and only 55.7% indicated knowing how to collect proof if they suspect cyberbullying has occurred. Fifty-seven percent of the students cited following digital netiquette when communicating or posting online, 59.7% of the students have shared their password with a friend, and 48.5% have added a friend and followed someone they did not know. Middle school students lack an understanding of digital citizenship practices, which has implications for teachers, administrators, and parents on teaching digital citizenship at school and home.

    The world has transitioned into an entire cyber world due to the impact that COVID-19 has had on the planet—forcing us to resort to technology for most of our basic needs like shopping, attending school, and communicating. Technology has already proven to be at the forefront of generation, but now it is causing us not as familiar with technology to use it for our everyday needs. For instance, the elderly and children have had to enter the digital world to keep track of daily life. As a result of this, The education system was also put into a challenging predicament, forcing schools to shut their doors to students and move to complete remote learning. This solution to the COVID-19 pandemic was to limit the virus's spread by leaving lectures, lessons, and seminars to be taught through distant learning. Although this solution proved to be best, the transition has brought upon some unforeseen challenges putting students, parents, school faculty, and staff in difficult positions. The pandemic response has also presented many cybersecurity concerns because, as we all know, cybercriminals target everyone. The transition to remote learning has opened up tons of vulnerabilities within the education system and consequently expanded cybercriminals' reach.

  3. Why do secondary students in the US consistently and increasingly report a lack of interest in mathematics? Lack of interest in mathematics has been well documented in TIMSS responses; students dissatisfaction with mathematics more than doubled by 2011, when 40% of 8th graders reported not liking math, up from 18% as 4th graders in 2007. And, sadly, the trend appears to be worsening; in 2015, 47% of 8th graders indicated not liking math, up from 22% as 4th graders. In order to positively impact student attitudes towards mathematics, it is important to understand factors that may influence secondary students’ relationship with the discipline. This poster presents findings from an exploratory study of student disposition toward mathematics. We designed an online survey to learn about students’ relationship with mathematics, including experiences and settings that contribute to both positive and negative feelings about the subject. We surveyed 275 students, grades 9 to 12, in 11 classes in three schools in three New England districts. Though not randomly chosen, this sample allows us to examine student attitudes across a variety of contexts. We asked students about their feelings towards mathematics over the years, as well as which aspects of class they most enjoyed or disliked. Finally, we included items from the TRIPOD survey (Wallace et al., 2016) and the 2015 NAEP survey, which allows us to compare our sample with the national sample. Initial results indicate that student view their teachers and the topics of study as the central factors influencing their enjoyment of mathematics class. We found a correlation between responses that math is boring and that it is not relevant. Students who like math and those who do not reported different class activity preferences. For example, students who like math reported disliking watching a video in class, while students who dislike math reported disliking learning something new. Both groups of students (those who like math and those who do not) dislike math class when they have to present work to classmates, but hold positive views of solving puzzles and working with other students. Technology seems to appeal equally to both groups. Students who reported disliking math also look forward to playing competitive games. We saw no evidence that gender or race corresponded to students’ level of appreciation math. Finally, students reported liking math class less in high school than in middle school. Identifying factors that influence secondary student mathematical dispositions can inform curriculum designers seeking to improve mathematical attitudes. Future studies can learn if new curricular designs can change student relationships with mathematics to reverse recent trends.
