Eco-driving has garnered considerable research attention owing to its potential socio-economic impact, including enhanced public health and mitigated climate change effects through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. With an expectation of more autonomous vehicles (AVs) on the road, an eco-driving strategy in hybrid traffic networks encompassing AV and human-driven vehicles (HDVs) with the coordination of traffic lights is a challenging task. The challenge is partially due to the insufficient infrastructure for collecting, transmitting, and sharing real-time traffic data among vehicles, facilities, and traffic control centers, and the following decision-making of agents involved in traffic control. Additionally, the intricate nature of the existing traffic network, with its diverse array of vehicles and facilities, contributes to the challenge by hindering the development of a mathematical model for accurately characterizing the traffic network. In this study, we utilized the Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) simulator to tackle the first challenge through computational analysis. To address the second challenge, we employed a model-free reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm, proximal policy optimization, to decide the actions of AV and traffic light signals in a traffic network. A novel eco-driving strategy was proposed by introducing different percentages of AV into the traffic flow and collaborating with traffic light signals using RL to control the overall speed of the vehicles, resulting in improved fuel consumption efficiency. Average rewards with different penetration rates of AV (5%, 10%, and 20% of total vehicles) were compared to the situation without any AV in the traffic flow (0% penetration rate). The 10% penetration rate of AV showed a minimum time of convergence to achieve average reward, leading to a significant reduction in fuel consumption and total delay of all vehicles.

High-Resolution Traffic Sensing with Probe Autonomous Vehicles: A Data-Driven Approach

Recent decades have witnessed the breakthrough of autonomous vehicles (AVs), and the sensing capabilities of AVs have been dramatically improved. Various sensors installed on AVs will be collecting massive data and perceiving the surrounding traffic continuously. In fact, a fleet of AVs can serve as floating (or probe) sensors, which can be utilized to infer traffic information while cruising around the roadway networks. Unlike conventional traffic sensing methods relying on fixed location sensors or moving sensors that acquire only the information of their carrying vehicle, this paper leverages data from AVs carrying sensors for not only the information of the AVs, but also the characteristics of the surrounding traffic. A high-resolution data-driven traffic sensing framework is proposed, which estimates the fundamental traffic state characteristics, namely, flow, density and speed in high spatio-temporal resolutions and of each lane on a general road, and it is developed under different levels of AV perception capabilities and for any AV market penetration rate. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves high accuracy even with a low AV market penetration rate. This study would help policymakers and private sectors (e.g., Waymo) to understand the values of massive data collected by AVs in traffic operation and management.

Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) are an emerging and highly impactful technology on today's roads. When assessing the performance of AVs, it is useful to study their improvement relative to common metrics such as fuel economy/emissions, safety, and congestion. But metrics of the vehicle's performance alone may not be complete; an AV that is affecting and reacting to a smart traffic light, for example, may improve its own performance, but may cause the same intersection to degrade the performance of other vehicles around the AV. Similar concerns arise in nearly all AV topics: platooning, light pre-emption, lane tracking, etc. Thus, the assessment of the vehicle's impacts on surrounding traffic is important, possibly even more important than the improvements enabled on the AV alone. But what boundary, or factors, define the vehicles, equipment, etc. “surrounding” an AV? The goal of this work is to characterize the boundary of vehicles “surrounding” an AV, referred to as Region of Influence, or ROI. Specifically, this work focuses on the problem that considering a perturbation is exerted into a traffic system, how far in time and space the perturbation from an AV’s decision can influence the surrounding system’s behavior. To achieve the goal, we utilized AIMSUN, a microscopic traffic simulator, to perform baseline and perturbed simulations. The ROI was evaluated by comparing trajectories of traffic surrounding the ego vehicle using different metrics, including difference in trajectories, Euclidian distance, rate of change of Euclidian distance, total number of lane changes over the whole simulation space versus time and total number of lane changes over the whole simulation time versus distance to ego vehicle. The results show that the ROI can be viewed from different perspectives using these metrics, and it is dependent on speed variance of the traffic.more » « less

Zonta, Daniele; Su, Zhongqing; Glisic, Branko (Ed.)Recent developments in autonomous vehicle (AV) or connected AVs (CAVs) technology have led to predictions that fully self-driven vehicles could completely change the transportation network over the next decades. However, at this stage, AVs and CAVs are still in the development stage which requires various trails in the field and machine learning through autonomous driving miles on real road networks. Until the complete market adoption of autonomous technology, a long transition period of coexistence between conventional and autonomous cars would exist. It is important to study and develop the expected driving behavior of future autonomous cars and the traffic simulation platforms provide an opportunity for researchers and technology developers to implement and assess the different behaviors of self-driving vehicle technology before launching it to the actual ground. This study utilizes PTV VISSIM microsimulation platform to evaluate the mobility performance of unmanned vehicles at a 4-way signalized traffic intersection. The software contains three different AV-ready driving logics such as AV-cautious, AV-normal, and AV-aggressive which were tested against the performance of the conventional vehicles, and the results of the study revealed that the overall network operational performance improves with the progressive introduction of AVs using AV-normal, and AV-aggressive driving behaviors while the AV-cautious driving behavior stays conservative and deteriorates the traffic performance.more » « less

A popular metric for measuring progress in autonomous driving has been the "miles per intervention". This is nowhere near a sufficient metric and it does not allow for a fair comparison between the capabilities of two autonomous vehicles (AVs). In this paper we propose Scenario2Vector - a Scenario Description Language (SDL) based embedding for traffic situations that allows us to automatically search for similar traffic situations from large AV data-sets. Our SDL embedding distills a traffic situation experienced by an AV into its canonical components - actors, actions, and the traffic scene. We can then use this embedding to evaluate similarity of different traffic situations in vector space. We have also created a first of its kind, Traffic Scenario Similarity (TSS) dataset which contains human ranking annotations for the similarity between traffic scenarios. Using the TSS data, we compare our SDL embedding -with textual caption based search methods such as Sentence2Vector. We find that Scenario2Vector outperforms Sentence2Vector by 13% ; and is a promising step towards enabling fair comparisons among AVs by inspecting how they perform in similar traffic situations. We hope that Scenario2Vector can have a similar impact to the AV community that Word2Vec/Sent2Vec have had in Natural Language Processing datasets.more » « less

Multi-sensor fusion has been widely used by autonomous vehicles (AVs) to integrate the perception results from different sensing modalities including LiDAR, camera and radar. Despite the rapid development of multi-sensor fusion systems in autonomous driving, their vulnerability to malicious attacks have not been well studied. Although some prior works have studied the attacks against the perception systems of AVs, they only consider a single sensing modality or a camera-LiDAR fusion system, which can not attack the sensor fusion system based on LiDAR, camera, and radar. To fill this research gap, in this paper, we present the first study on the vulnerability of multi-sensor fusion systems that employ LiDAR, camera, and radar. Specifically, we propose a novel attack method that can simultaneously attack all three types of sensing modalities using a single type of adversarial object. The adversarial object can be easily fabricated at low cost, and the proposed attack can be easily performed with high stealthiness and flexibility in practice. Extensive experiments based on a real-world AV testbed show that the proposed attack can continuously hide a target vehicle from the perception system of a victim AV using only two small adversarial objects.more » « less
