Title: Reflectionless plasmonic right-angled waveguide bend and divider using graphene and transformation optics
In this work, a plasmonic right-angled waveguide bend and divider are proposed. Using the Transformation Optics (TO) approach the transformation media of a bend and a T-shaped divider are obtained. Such media with continuous refractive index are realized with the help of graphene in the terahertz frequency range, key to effectively guiding the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation on the 90 degree curves.   1. Elastic constants of splay K_11, twist K_22, and bend K_33 of nematic liquid crystals are often assumed to be equal to each other in order to simplify the theoretical description of complex director fields. Here we present examples of how the disparity of K_11 and K_33 produces effects that cannot be described in a one-constant approximation. In a lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal, nematic droplets coexisting with the isotropic phase change their shape from a simply-connected tactoid to a topologically distinct toroid as a result of temperature or concentration variation. The transformation is caused by the increase of the splay-to-bend ratio K_11/K_33. A phase transition from a conventional nematic to a twist-bend nematic implies that the ratio K_11/K_33 changes from very large to very small. As a result, the defects caused by an externally applied electric field change the deformation mode of optic axis from bend to splay. In the paraelectric-ferroelectric nematic transition, one finds an inverse situation: K_11/K_33 changes from small to large, which shapes the domain walls in the spontaneous electric polarization field as conic sections. The polarization field tends to be solenoidal, or divergence-free, a behavior complementary to irrotational curl-free director textures of a smectic A.

Abstract The Cracked Chevron Notched Brazilian Disc (CCNBD) method was selected for Mode I fracture toughness tests on Poorman schist, Yates amphibolite, and rhyolite dikes from the EGS Collab site at the SURF in Lead, South Dakota. The effects of lithology, anisotropy, and loading rate were investigated. Fracture toughness was greatest in amphibolite, with schist and rhyolite having similar toughness values ( $${K}_{amphibolite}$$ K amphibolite > $${K}_{rhyolite}$$ K rhyolite ≈ $${K}_{schist}$$ K schist ). The effects of anisotropy on fracture toughness were investigated in the foliated schist samples. Schist samples were prepared in three geometries (divider, arrester, and short transverse) which controlled how the fracture would propagate relative to foliations. The divider geometry was strongest and short transverse geometry was the weakest ( $${K}_{divider}$$ K divider > $${K}_{arrester}$$ K arrester > $${K}_{short transverse}$$ K shorttransverse ). Fracture toughness was observed to decrease with decreasing loading rate. Optical and SEM microscopy revealed that for the short transverse geometry, fractures tended to propagate along grain boundaries, whereas in arrester and divider geometries fractures tended to propagate through grains. In foliated samples, the tortuosity of the fracture observed in thin section was greater in arrester and divider geometries than in short transverse geometries.

  3. In this paper we present an approximate division scheme for Scaled Population (SP) arithmetic, a technique that improves on the limitations of stochastic computing (SC). SP arithmetic circuits are designed (a) to perform all operations with a constant delay, and (b) they use scaling operations to help reduce errors compared to SC circuits. As part of this work, we also present a method to correlate two SP numbers with a constant delay. We compare our SP divider with SC dividers, as well as fixed-point dividers (in terms of area, power and delay). Our 512-bit SP divider has a delay (power) that is 0.08× (0.06×) that of the equivalent fixed-point binary divider. Compared to a equivalent SC divider, our power-delay-product is 13× better. Realization of the full potential of transformation optics depends on access to the media, in which prescribed by the theory spatial dispersion of material parameters, such as permittivity, permeability and/or refractive index, could be implemented. As an alternative to conventional metamaterials, this work presents transformation media composed of all-dielectric metamaterials and photonic crystals.
