This evidence-based paper assesses strategies for Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) social program success. REU programs bring students from across the country to a university campus for the summer. These students learn how to conduct real research in their discipline by actually doing it, under the supervision of a faculty mentor. Many students who participate in REU programs remember these programs long after the program is complete. The REU experience of working with a faculty mentor on bona fide research is undoubtedly key to the educational and career planning benefits that students enjoy. The best REU experiences typically don’t happen by accident. They must be deliberately planned. Despite the importance of this component of REU programs, minimal literature related REU social programs exists. This paper considers what makes a strong REU social program.

            The pandemic has had innumerable impacts on the oceanographic community, including on summer research internship programs that expose undergraduates to diverse career paths in oceanography while immersed in an active laboratory. For many students, these internships are formative in their career choices. The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Oceanography (SURFO) at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography is one of the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs that proceeded remotely during the summer of 2020. Here, we highlight one project that, although remote, maintained a hands-on research experience focused on quantitative skill building. The pandemic forced the REU advisors to identify key learning goals and ensure their safe delivery, given the circumstances. Although all participants agreed that in-person instruction would have been preferable, we were pleased that we did not let a virus halt essential oceanographic research training.

Given the uncertainty about the ability to conduct future REU programs onsite amidst a pandemic of unknown duration, it was decided to undertake the development of a model for online-based REUs and evaluate it using the evaluation tools that have been applied for some time to onsite programs. This paper presents the REU program at North Dakota State University during the summer of 2020 and its assessment. An overview of the program, as it ran in 2020, is provided. This is compared to the way the program operated in prior years as an onsite program. Specific changes that were made and their impact on the equivalency of the program to prior years are discussed.             This paper reports on the fourth year of a cybersecurity-focused research experience for undergraduates programs site in the summer of 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the site operated in a hybrid mode during this summer, after operating entirely virtually during the summer of 2020. The paper compares the results of operating in a hybrid mode with two years of in-person operations and one year of virtual operations. It discusses the lessons learned when operating in the hybrid mode and makes recommendations for future hybrid REU implementations.more » « less

            This study analyzed terminal degree and career choices of students who performed undergraduate research. In one analysis, the study compared terminal degree and career choices between a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) and traditional non-course-based undergraduate research experiences at one primarily undergraduate institution (PUI). Students who pursued postbaccalaureate programs chose terminal degrees at levels exceeding 75%, with no significant difference between a CURE experience and a traditional research experience. Analysis of terminal degree and career choices at four PUIs providing traditional research experiences showed a marked difference in the number of students pursuing terminal degrees. Two PUIs showed rates > 75%, whereas students at the other two PUIs pursued terminal degrees <50% of the time. The majority of students not pursuing terminal degrees chose M.S. degrees in education and healthcare. An analysis was also performed among students participating in traditional summer undergraduate research on a research-intensive university (RIU) campus with a medical school. Students were accepted from two programs, an NIH IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program recruiting students from the RIU and an NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program recruiting undergraduates from rural PUIs and minority-serving institutions, particularly tribal colleges. Analysis showed that >70% of the students who pursued postbaccalaureate programs chose terminal degrees. INBRE undergraduates displayed a marked preference for the M.D. degree (73.9% vs. 17.4%), whereas the REU students chose the Ph.D. degree (75.0% vs. 22.9%). American Indian students were also analyzed separately for career choice and showed an equal preference for the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees when pursuing postbaccalaureate education. Overall, the results provide evidence that undergraduate student research stimulates student careers in areas needed by the nation’s citizen stakeholders.more » « less

            Due to the growing concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, colleges and universities either canceled or remotely hosted their 2020 National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs. This analysis is part of a larger study examining the impact of these fully remote experiences on professional and psychosocial factors such as mentees' sense of belonging, identity, and self-efficacy and their retention in STEM degree programs. We present a single-student case study and describe the dramaturgical analysis which centers on identifying five fundamental constructs within the data: objectives, conflicts, tactics, attitudes, and emotions. These items investigate what the participant in the remote REU program experienced and how this experience changed the ways in which he thinks about his future career decision-making. Our analysis explored four different sub-narratives: lack of community in virtual REU, mentor support, perception of the "real" nature of the experience in a virtual format, and future career decision-making. The mentee reported that this experience was highly beneficial and that he developed a sense of belonging and identity, despite working remotely -- often from his own bedroom.more » « less
