Title: Synthesis, characterization, and alkoxide transfer reactivity of dimeric Tl 2 (OR) 2 complexes
Reaction of LiOC t Bu 2 Ph with TlPF 6 forms the dimeric Tl 2 (OC t Bu 2 Ph) 2 complex, a rare example of a homoleptic thallium alkoxide complex demonstrating formally two-coordinate metal centers. Characterization of Tl 2 (OC t Bu 2 Ph) 2 by 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography reveals the presence of two isomers differing by the mutual conformation of the alkoxide ligands, and by the planarity of the central Tl–O–Tl–O plane. Tl 2 (OC t Bu 2 Ph) 2 serves as a convenient precursor to the formation of old and new [M(OC t Bu 2 Ph) n ] complexes (M = Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn), including a rare example of T-shaped Zn(OC t Bu 2 Ph) 2 (THF) complex, which could not be previously synthesized using more conventional LiOR/HOR precursors. The reaction of [Ru(cymene)Cl 2 ] 2 with Tl 2 (OC t Bu 2 Ph) 2 results in the formation of a ruthenium( ii ) alkoxide complex. For ruthenium, the initial coordination of the alkoxide triggers C–H activation at the ortho -H of [OC t Bu 2 Ph] which results in its bidentate coordination. In addition to Tl 2 (OC t Bu 2 Ph) 2 , related Tl 2 (OC t Bu 2 (3,5-Me 2 C 6 H 3 )) 2 was also synthesized, characterized, and shown to exhibit similar reactivity with iron and ruthenium precursors. Synthetic, structural, and spectroscopic characterizations are presented.  more » « less

  1. The insertion of carbon dioxide into metal element σ-bonds is an important elementary step in many catalytic reactions for carbon dioxide valorization. Here, the insertion of carbon dioxide into a family of group 10 alkyl complexes of the type ( R PBP)M(CH 3 ) ( R PBP = B(NCH 2 PR 2 ) 2 C 6 H 4 − ; R = Cy or t Bu; M = Ni or Pd) to generate κ 1 -acetate complexes of the form ( R PBP)M{OC(O)CH 3 } is investigated. This involved the preparation and characterization of a number of new complexes supported by the unusual R PBP ligand, which features a central boryl donor that exerts a strong trans -influence, and the identification of a new decomposition pathway that results in C–B bond formation. In contrast to other group 10 methyl complexes supported by pincer ligands, carbon dioxide insertion into ( R PBP)M(CH 3 ) is facile and occurs at room temperature because of the high trans -influence of the boryl donor. Given the mild conditions for carbon dioxide insertion, we perform a rare kinetic study on carbon dioxide insertion into a late-transition metal alkyl species using ( t Bu PBP)Pd(CH 3 ). These studies demonstrate that the Dimroth–Reichardt parameter for a solvent correlates with the rate of carbon dioxide insertion and that Lewis acids do not promote insertion. DFT calculations indicate that insertion into ( t Bu PBP)M(CH 3 ) (M = Ni or Pd) proceeds via an S E 2 mechanism and we compare the reaction pathway for carbon dioxide insertion into group 10 methyl complexes with insertion into group 10 hydrides. Overall, this work provides fundamental insight that will be valuable for the development of improved and new catalysts for carbon dioxide utilization.

  2. Abstract

Reactions of the IrVhydride [MeBDIDipp]IrH4{BDI=(Dipp)NC(Me)CH(Me)CN(Dipp); Dipp=2,6‐iPr2C6H3} with E[N(SiMe3)2]2(E=Sn, Pb) afforded the unusual dimeric dimetallotetrylenes ([MeBDIDipp]IrH)2(μ2‐E)2in good yields. Moreover, ([MeBDIDipp]IrH)2(μ2‐Ge)2was formed in situ from thermal decomposition of [MeBDIDipp]Ir(H)2Ge[N(SiMe3)2]2. These reactions are accompanied by liberation of HN(SiMe3)2and H2through the apparent cleavage of an E−N(SiMe3)2bond by Ir−H. In a reversal of this process, ([MeBDIDipp]IrH)2(μ2‐E)2reacted with excess H2to regenerate [MeBDIDipp]IrH4. Varying the concentrations of reactants led to formation of the trimeric ([MeBDIDipp]IrH2)3(μ2‐E)3. The further scope of this synthetic route was investigated with group 15 amides, and ([MeBDIDipp]IrH)2(μ2‐Bi)2was prepared by the reaction of [MeBDIDipp]IrH4with Bi(NMe2)3or Bi(OtBu)3to afford the first example of a “naked” two‐coordinate Bi atom bound exclusively to transition metals. A viable mechanism that accounts for the formation of these products is proposed. Computational investigations of the Ir2E2(E=Sn, Pb) compounds characterized them as open‐shell singlets with confined nonbonding lone pairs at the E centers. In contrast, Ir2Bi2is characterized as having a closed‐shell singlet ground state.

  3. Two new Ce IV /O 2− clusters, (pyH) 8 [Ce 10 O 4 (OH) 4 (O 3 PPh) 12 (NO 3 ) 12 ] (1) and [Ce 6 O 4 (OH) 4 (O 2 PPh 2 ) 4 (O 2 C t Bu) 8 ] (2), have been prepared that contain P-based ligands for the first time. They were obtained from the reaction of (NH 4 ) 2 [Ce(NO 3 ) 6 ], PhPO 3 H 2 or Ph 2 PO 2 H, and t BuCO 2 H in a 2 : 1 : 2 molar ratio in pyridine/MeOH (10 : 1 mL). Both compounds contain a {Ce 6 O 4 (OH) 4 } face-capped octahedral core, with 1 containing an additional four Ce IV on the outside to give a supertetrahedral Ce 10 topology; the {Ce 6 O 8 } unit is the smallest recognizable fragment of the fluorite structure of CeO 2 . The HO˙ radical scavenging activities of 1 and 2 were measured by UV/vis spectral monitoring of methylene blue oxidation by HO˙ radicals in the presence and absence of the Ce/O clusters, and the results compared with those for larger Ce 24 and Ce 38 molecular nanoparticles of CeO 2 prepared in previous work. 1 and 2 are both very poor HO˙ radical scavengers compared with Ce 24 and Ce 38 , a result that is consistent with reports in the literature that PO 4 3− ions inhibit the radical scavenging ability of traditional CeO 2 nanoparticles and putatively assigned to PO 4 3− binding to the surface.

Redox-active multimetallic platforms with synthetically addressable and hemilabile active sites are attractive synthetic targets for mimicking the reactivity of enzymatic co-factors toward multielectron transformations. To this end, a family of ternary clusters featuring three edge metal sites anchored on a [Co 6 Se 8 ] multimetallic support via amidophosphine ligands are a promising platform. In this report, we explore how small changes in the stereoelectronic properties of these ligands alter [Co 6 Se 8 ] metalloligand formation, but also substrate binding affinity and strength of the edge/support interaction in two new ternary clusters, M 3 Co 6 Se 8 L 6 (M = Zn, Fe; L (−) = Ph 2 PN (−)i Pr). These clusters are characterized extensively using a range of methods, including single crystal X-ray diffraction, electronic absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Substrate binding studies reveal that Fe 3 Co 6 Se 8 L 6 resists coordination of larger ligands like pyridine or tetrahydrofuran, but binds the smaller ligand CN t Bu. Additionally, investigations into the synthesis of new [Co 6 Se 8 ] metalloligands using two aminophosphines, Ph 2 PN(H) i Pr (L H ) and i Pr 2 PN(H) i Pr, led to the synthesis and characterization of Co 6 Se 8 L H 6 , as well as the smaller clusters Co 4 Se 2 (CO) 6 L H 4 , Co 3 Se(μ 2 -PPh 2 )(CO) 4 L H 3 , and [Co(CO) 3 ( i Pr 2 PN(H) i Pr)] 2 . Cumulatively, this study expands our understanding on the effect of the stereoelectronic properties of aminophosphine ligands in the synthesis of cobalt chalcogenide clusters, and, importantly on modulating the push–pull dynamic between the [Co 6 Se 8 ] support, the edge metals and incoming coordinating ligands in ternary M 3 Co 6 Se 8 L 6 clusters.

  5. Synthesis of a new mononuclear magnesium complex with a bulky bis(alkoxide) ligand environment and its reactivity in ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) are reported. Reaction of n -butyl- sec -butylmagnesium with two equivalents of HOR (HOR = di- tert -butylphenylmethanol, HOC t Bu 2 Ph) formed Mg(OR) 2 (THF) 2 . The reaction proceeded via the Mg(OR)( sec -Bu)(THF) 2 intermediate that was independently synthesized by treating n -butyl- sec -butylmagnesium with one equivalent of HOR. Mg(OR) 2 (THF) 2 led to active albeit not well-controlled ROP of rac -lactide. In contrast, well-controlled ROCOP of epoxides with cyclic anhydrides was observed, including efficient and alternating copolymerization of phthalic anhydride with cyclohexene oxide as well as rare copolymerization of phthalic anhydride with limonene oxide and terpolymerization of phthalic anhydride with both cyclohexene oxide and limonene oxide. In addition, novel copolymerization of dihydrocoumarin with limonene oxide is described.
