Title: Data driven discovery of conjugated polyelectrolytes for optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications
Abstract Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs), comprised of conjugated backbones and pendant ionic functionalities, are versatile organic materials with diverse applications. However, the myriad of possible molecular structures of CPEs render traditional, trial-and-error materials discovery strategy impractical. Here, we tackle this problem using a data-centric approach by incorporating machine learning with high-throughput first-principles calculations. We systematically examine how key materials properties depend on individual structural components of CPEs and from which the structure–property relationships are established. By means of machine learning, we uncover structural features crucial to the CPE properties, and these features are then used as descriptors in the machine learning to predict the properties of unknown CPEs. Lastly, we discover promising CPEs as hole transport materials in halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices and as photocatalysts for water splitting. Our work could accelerate the discovery of CPEs for optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) exhibit a strong interplay between ionic and electronic properties, enabling tunable photophysical properties and charge transport dynamics. Polyelectrolyte complexation represents a versatile self‐assembly strategy to control the properties of CPEs by forming dense phases with varying optoelectronic and mechanical characteristics. This study focuses on ionically assembled complexes comprising oppositely charged self‐doped CPE (CPE‐K) and bottlebrush polyelectrolyte (BPE). It is demonstrated that subtle adjustments in the composition of CPE‐K:BPE blends enables tuning of photophysical and viscoelastic properties. It is observed that increasing the CPE‐K:BPE monomeric ratio from 1:1 to 1:3 in the initial solution for complexation induces a significant bathochromic shift in the maximum photoluminescence intensity of the dense phase, from 1.8 to 1.4 eV. Additionally, a higher BPE content enhances the softness and adhesion of the solid complex, while maintaining yield‐stress behavior and cyclability of the dense phase. The ability to electrochemically and statically dope the CPE‐K–BPE complex, effectively modulating its charge transport and optoelectronic properties is also demonstrated. This work underscores the potential of these complex‐fluid phases for developing soft, adhesive, and elastic mixed ionic‐electronic conductors with tunable properties for functional applications and 3D‐printing.

  2. Abstract Data-driven approaches to materials exploration and discovery are building momentum due to emerging advances in machine learning. However, parsimonious representations of crystals for navigating the vast materials search space remain limited. To address this limitation, we introduce a materials discovery framework that utilizes natural language embeddings from language models as representations of compositional and structural features. The contextual knowledge encoded in these language representations conveys information about material properties and structures, enabling both similarity analysis to recall relevant candidates based on a query material and multi-task learning to share information across related properties. Applying this framework to thermoelectrics, we demonstrate diversified recommendations of prototype crystal structures and identify under-studied material spaces. Validation through first-principles calculations and experiments confirms the potential of the recommended materials as high-performance thermoelectrics. Language-based frameworks offer versatile and adaptable embedding structures for effective materials exploration and discovery, applicable across diverse material systems.

  3. Abstract The extension of conjugated organoboranes from monomeric species to oligomers, macrocycles, and polymers offers access to a plethora of fascinating new materials. The p–π* conjugation between empty orbitals on boron and the conjugated linkers not only affects the electronic structure and optical properties, but also enables mutual interactions between electron‐deficient boron centers. The unique properties of these electron‐deficient π‐conjugated systems are exploited in highly luminescent materials, organic optoelectronic devices, and sensing applications.

  4. Abstract Non‐conjugated pendant electroactive polymers (NCPEPs) are an emerging class of polymers that offer the potential of combining the desirable optoelectronic properties of conjugated polymers with the superior synthetic methodologies and stability of traditional non‐conjugated polymers. Despite an increasing number of studies focused on NCPEPs, particularly on understanding fundamental structure‐property relationships, no attempts have been made to provide an overview on established relationships to date. This review showcases selected reports on NCPEP homopolymers and copolymers that demonstrate how optical, electronic, and physical properties of the polymers are affected by tuning of key structural variables such as the chemical structure of the polymer backbone, molecular weight, tacticity, spacer length, the nature of the pendant group, and in the case of copolymers the ratios between different comonomers and between individual polymer blocks. Correlation of structural features with improvedπ‐stacking and enhanced charge carrier mobility serve as the primary figures of merit in evaluating impact on NCPEP properties. While this review is not intended to serve as a comprehensive summary of all reports on tuning of structural parameters in NCPEPs, it highlights relevant established structure‐property relationships that can serve as a guideline for more targeted design of novel NCPEPs in the future.

  5. One-dimensional (1D) van der Waals (vdW) materials display electronic and magnetic transport properties that make them uniquely suited as interconnect materials and for low-dimensional optoelectronic applications. However, there are only around 700 1D vdW structures in general materials databases, making database curation approaches ineffective for 1D discovery. Here, we utilize machine-learning techniques to discover 1D vdW compositions that have not yet been synthesized. Our techniques go beyond discovery efforts involving elemental substitutions and instead start with a composition space of 4741 binary and 392,342 ternary formulas. We predict up to 3000 binary and 10,000 ternary 1D compounds and further classify them by expected magnetic and electronic properties. Our model identifies MoI3, a material we experimentally confirm to exist with wire-like subcomponents and exotic magnetic properties. More broadly, we find several chalcogen-, halogen-, and pnictogen-containing compounds expected to be synthesizable using chemical vapor deposition and chemical vapor transport.
