Title: Ligand‐Controlled Regiodivergence in Nickel‐Catalyzed Hydroarylation and Hydroalkenylation of Alkenyl Carboxylic Acids**
Abstract A nickel‐catalyzed regiodivergent hydroarylation and hydroalkenylation of unactivated alkenyl carboxylic acids is reported, whereby the ligand environment around the metal center dictates the regiochemical outcome. Markovnikov hydrofunctionalization products are obtained under mild ligand‐free conditions, with up to 99 % yield and >20:1 selectivity. Alternatively, anti‐Markovnikov products can be accessed with a novel 4,4‐disubstituted Pyrox ligand in excellent yield and >20:1 selectivity. Both electronic and steric effects on the ligand contribute to the high yield and selectivity. Mechanistic studies suggest a change in the turnover‐limiting and selectivity‐determining step induced by the optimal ligand. DFT calculations reveal that in the anti‐Markovnikov pathway, repulsion between the ligand and the alkyl group is minimized (by virtue of it being 1° versus 2°) in the rate‐ and regioselectivity‐determining transmetalation transition state.  more » « less

  2. The catalytic activity and selectivity of two different water-soluble palladium nanoparticles capped with 5-(trimethylammonio)pentanethiolate and 6-(carboxylate)hexanethiolate ligands are investigated using the catalytic reaction of allyl benzene. The results show that the regioselective transformation of allyl benzene to 3-phenylpropanal occurs at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure in neat water via a Tsuji–Wacker type oxidation. Conventionally, the Tsuji–Wacker oxidation promotes the Markovnikov oxidation of terminal alkenes to their respective ketones in the presence of dioxygen. Water-soluble Pd nanoparticles, however, catalyze the anti-Markovnikov oxidation of allyl benzene to 3-phenylpropanal in up to 83% yields. Catalytic results of other aromatic alkenes suggest that the presence of benzylic hydrogen is a key to the formation of a p-allyl Pd intermediate and the anti-Markovnikov addition of H2O. The subsequent b-H elimination and tautomerization contribute to the formation of aldehyde products. Water-soluble Pd nanoparticles are characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), UV–vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Catalysis results are examined using 1H NMR and/or GC-MS analyses of isolated reaction mixtures.

  3. Abstract Transition metal‐catalyzed C−H bond oxidation of free carboxylic acid stands as an economic, selective, and efficient strategy to generate lactones, hydroxylated products, and acetoxylated products and attracts much of the chemists’ attention. Herein, we performed a density functional theory study on the mechanism and selectivity in Pd‐catalyzed and MPAA ligand‐enabled C−H bond acetoxylation reaction. It was found that the ligand, base, and substrate are important in determining the reaction mechanism and the selectivity. The acetic anhydride additive is critical in leading the reaction to be acetoxylation, instead of the lactonization, through a facile σ‐bond metathesis mechanism that leads to the Pd‐OAc in‐termediate. Our study sheds light on the further development of transition metal‐catalyzed C−H bond oxidation reactions.

  4. Abstract Regioselective hydrofunctionalization of alkynes represents a straightforward route to access alkenyl boronate and silane building blocks. In previously reported catalytic systems, high selectivity is achieved with a limited scope of substrates and/or reagents, with general solutions lacking. Herein, we describe a selective copper‐catalyzed Markovnikov hydrofunctionalization of terminal alkynes that is facilitated by strongly donating cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligands. Using this method, both alkyl‐ and aryl‐substituted alkynes are coupled with a variety of boryl and silyl reagents with high α‐selectivity. The reaction is scalable, and the products are versatile intermediates that can participate in various downstream transformations. Preliminary mechanistic experiments shed light on the role of CAAC ligands in this process.

  5. Molecular complexes of vanadium catalyze cis-selective anti-Markovnikov hydroboration of alkynes to generate vinyl boronate esters with appreciable turnover numbers of up to 4000 at room temperature. This represents the first example of the use of vanadium in homogeneous catalytic hydroboration of alkynes. The method is tolerant to various functional groups, including C═C double bonds. Accordingly, 1-hexen-5-yne can be quantitatively and selectively reduced at the triple bond, leaving the double bond unaffected. Preliminary computational analysis of the catalytic cycle reveals both two-state reactivity and previously unknown complexity associated with the redox-active ligand. Specifically, it was found that the ligand can shuttle up to two electrons back-and-forth to and from the metal, which thus adapts three different oxidation states on the catalytic reaction coordinate.
