Our efforts in the chemistry of gold complexes featuring ambiphilic phosphine‐carbenium L/Z‐type ligand have led us to consider the reduction of the carbenium moiety as a means to modulate the gold–carbenium interaction present in these complexes. Here, it was shown that the one‐electron reduction of [(

Abstract o ‐Ph2P(C6H4)Acr)AuCl]+(Acr=9‐N ‐methylacridinium) produces a neutral stable radical, the structure of which showed a marked increase in the Au–Acr distance. Related structural changes were observed for the phosphine oxide analogue [(o ‐Ph2P(O)(C6H4)Acr]+, the reduction of which interfered with the P=O→carbenium interaction. These structural effects, driven by a reduction‐induced change in the electronic and electrostatic characteristics of the compounds, showed that the charge and accepting properties of the carbenium unit can be modulated. These results highlight the redox‐noninnocence of carbenium Z‐type ligand, a feature that can be exploited to induce specific conformational changes. -
Abstract With the intent to demonstrate that the charge of Z‐type ligands can be used to modulate the electrophilic character and catalytic properties of coordinated transition metals, we are now targeting complexes bearing polycationic antimony‐based Z‐type ligands. Toward this end, the dangling phosphine arm of ((
o ‐(Ph2P)C6H4)3)SbCl2AuCl (1 ) was oxidized with hydrogen peroxide to afford [((o ‐(Ph2P)C6H4)2(o ‐Ph2PO)C6H4)SbAuCl2]+([2 a ]+) which was readily converted into the dicationic complex [((o ‐(Ph2P)C6H4)2(o ‐Ph2PO)C6H4)SbAuCl]2+([3 ]2+) by treatment with 2 equiv AgNTf2. Both experimental and computational results show that [3 ]2+possess a strong Au→Sb interaction reinforced by the dicationic character of the antimony center. The gold‐bound chloride anion of [3 ]2+is rather inert and necessitates the addition of excess AgNTf2to undergo activation. The activated complex, referred to as [4 ]2+[((o ‐(Ph2P)C6H4)2(o ‐Ph2PO)C6H4)SbAuNTf2]2+readily catalyzes both the polymerization and the hydroamination of styrene. This atypical reactivity underscores the strong σ‐accepting properties of the dicationic antimony ligand and its activating impact on the gold center. -

Aiming to study the interaction of gold with the highly Lewis acidic fluorenyl cation, we synthesised ( o -[Ph 2 P(C 6 H 4 )Flu)AuCl(tht)][BF 4 ] ([2][BF 4 ]) and ( o -Ph 2 P(C 6 H 4 )Flu)AuCl 2 (3) (Flu = 9-fluorenyl) and found that the latter could be converted into [( o -Ph 2 P(C 6 H 4 )Flu)AuCl] + ([4] + ) upon treatment with NaBArF 24 (BArF 24 = B(3,5-C 6 H 3 (CF 3 ) 2 ) 4 ). [4] + , which has been isolated as a chloride-bridged dimer, readily catalyses the cycloisomerisation of 2-allyl-2-(2-propynyl)malonate. Computational results show that [4] + possesses a strong Au → C + bond and readily activates enynes.more » « less

Cationic gold vinyl carbene/allylic cation complexes of the form ( E )-[(L)AuC(H)C(H)CAr 2 ] + OTf − {L = IPr, Ar = Ph [( E )- 5a ], L = IPr, Ar = 4-C 6 H 4 OMe [( E )- 5b ], L = P( t -Bu) 2 o -biphenyl, Ar = 4-C 6 H 4 OMe [( E )- 5c ]} were generated in solution via Lewis acid-mediated ionization of the corresponding gold (γ-methoxy)vinyl complexes ( E )-(L)AuC(H)C(H)C(OMe)Ar 2 at or below −95 °C. Complexes ( E )- 5b and ( E )- 5c were fully characterized in solution employing multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, which established the predominant contribution of the aurated allylic cation resonance structure and the significant distribution of positive charge into the γ-anisyl rings. Complex ( E )- 5b reacted rapidly at −95 °C with neutral two-electron, hydride, and oxygen atom donors exclusively at the C1 position of the vinyl carbene moiety and with p -methoxystyrene to form the corresponding vinylcyclopropane. In the absence of nucleophile ( E )- 5a decomposed predominantly via intermolecular carbene dimerization whereas formation of 1-aryl-5-methoxy indene upon ionization of ( Z )-(IPr)AuC(H)C(H)C(OMe)(4-C 6 H 4 OMe) 2 [( Z )- 6b ] implicated an intramolecular Friedel–Crafts or electrocyclic Nazarov pathway for the decomposition of the unobserved vinyl carbene complex ( Z )-[(IPr)AuC(H)C(H)C(4-C 6 H 4 OMe) 2 ] + OTf − [( Z )- 5b ].more » « less
