The MOSDEF survey: an improved Voronoi binning technique on spatially resolved stellar populations at z ∼ 2
ABSTRACT We use a sample of 350 star-forming galaxies at 1.25 < z < 2.66 from the Multi-Object Spectrograph For Infra-Red Exploration (MOSFIRE) Deep Evolution Field survey to demonstrate an improved Voronoi binning technique that we use to study the properties of resolved stellar populations in z ∼ 2 galaxies. Stellar population and dust maps are constructed from the high-resolution CANDELS/3D-HST multiband imaging. Rather than constructing the layout of resolved elements (i.e. Voronoi bins) from the signal-to-noise (S/N) distribution of the H160-band alone, we introduce a modified Voronoi binning method that additionally incorporates the S/N distribution of several resolved filters. The spectral energy distribution (SED)-derived resolved E(B − V)stars, stellar population ages, star-formation rates (SFRs), and stellar masses that are inferred from the Voronoi bins constructed from multiple filters are generally consistent with the properties inferred from the integrated photometry within the uncertainties, with the exception of the inferred E(B − V)stars from our z ∼ 1.5 sample due to their UV slopes being unconstrained by the resolved photometry. The results from our multifilter Voronoi binning technique are compared to those derived from a ‘traditional’ single-filter Voronoi binning approach. We present a new prospective analysis of deep multi-band imaging with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In this work, we investigate the recovery of high-redshift 5 < z < 12 galaxies through extensive image simulations of accepted JWST programs, including the Early Release Science in the EGS field and the Guaranteed Time Observations in the HUDF. ABSTRACT We present the results of a new, deeper, and complete search for high-redshift 6.5 < z < 9.3 quasars over 977 deg2 of the VISTA Kilo-Degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey. This exploits a new list-driven data set providing photometry in all bands Z, Y, J, H, Ks, for all sources detected by VIKING in J. We use the Bayesian model comparison (BMC) selection method of Mortlock et al., producing a ranked list of just 21 candidates. Luminous hot stars ( M K s ≲ 0 mag and T eff ≳ 8000 K) dominate the stellar energy input to the interstellar medium throughout cosmological time, are used as laboratories to test theories of stellar evolution and multiplicity, and serve as luminous tracers of star formation in the Milky Way and other galaxies. We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the Type II supernova ASASSN-14jb, together with Very Large Telescope (VLT) Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field observations of its host galaxy and a nebular-phase spectrum. This supernova, in the nearby galaxy ESO 467-G051 ( z = 0.006), was discovered and followed-up by the all-sky automated survey for supernovae (ASAS-SN). We obtained well-sampled las cumbres network (LCOGTN) B V g r i and Swift w 2 m 1 w 1 u b v optical, near-UV/optical light curves, and several optical spectra in the early photospheric phases. ABSTRACT We present deep rest-frame UV spectroscopic observations using the Gran Telescopio Canarias of six gravitationally lensed Lyα emitters (LAEs) at 2.36 < z < 2.82 selected from the BELLS GALLERY survey. By taking the magnifications into account, we show that LAEs can be as luminous as LLyα ≃ 30 × 1042 erg s−1 and MUV ≃ −23 (AB) without invoking an AGN component, in contrast with previous findings. We measure Lyα rest-frame equivalent widths, $EW_{0}\,\rm (Ly\alpha)$, ranging from 16 to 50 Å and Lyα escape fractions, $f_{\rm esc}\, \rm (Ly\alpha)$, from 10 per cent to 40 per cent.
