Title: “It’s All Connected”: Critical Bifocality and the Liminal Practice of Youth Work
Efforts to transform educational systems advocate for shifting and expanding the voices of those who generate research. This study was part of a project that brought together mathematics teachers, youth workers, and researchers to create equity-centered noticing frameworks for mathematics instruction. We explore youth workers’ understandings of the relationship between local educational equity problems and larger structural forces. By applying the framework of critical bifocality, we explore how youth workers demonstrate praxis where their pedagogical responses are animated by an under- standing of the inherent linkages between broad social, economic, and political forces and educational equity issues in the local community.  more » « less

    Through Youth Advocacy for Resilience to Disasters (YARDs), we offer a case study of a middle-school science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) programme to engage youth in disaster resilience planning through mapmaking and advocacy. From 2021 to 2023, we designed and implemented a 14-session curriculum that empowers middle-school youth (ages 11–14) to advocate for infrastructural improvements that can benefit their communities by learning about disaster resilience from the perspective of environmental justice and equity. Youth explore virtual mapmaking and data visualisation to understand the assets and vulnerabilities in their communities related to disasters. Finally, they develop an action plan and present their plan to local civic and government leaders to advocate for change. This curriculum was piloted as an after-school programme in the fall of 2022 and twice as a summer camp in 2022 and 2023. Results from student surveys, field note observations, and focus groups show that there was increased self-efficacy among the participants for advocacy behaviours related to natural disasters and an increase in their understanding of and feelings of importance of the programme topics. This article can help inform others working with youth on successes and challenges with programme development around disaster resilience.

  2. Digital Mathematics Storytelling (DMST) is an innovative educational approach that leverages the power of storytelling to connect mathematics with community, cultural, and family identities. Through this method, educators help youth and teachers develop critical digital media literacy, addressing the educational and societal impacts of digital media as well as fostering mathematical exploration. This poster presents the ways that a DMST workshop for youth who have recently migrated to the U.S. (voluntarily and involuntarily) opened up space for the exploration of mathematics, digital, and cultural identities and literacies as connected to the ongoing aftereffects of colonization.

In this study, College STEM Literacy Workers act as co-teachers in 9th and 10th grade classrooms alongside mathematics teachers as they both learn to integrate a 30-hour integrated computer science/mathematics curriculum. As part of the curriculum for educator learning, we adapted the Algebra Project’s “Model of Excellence” for culturally relevant-sustaining pedagogies. We used the framework to explore how teachers understand College STEM Literacy Workers’ contributions in the model as well as College STEM Literacy Workers’ own experiences in the classroom. We found that while teachers and College STEM Literacy Workers did not individually instantiate the model of excellence, they were able to achieve its constituent components between them. We explore differences between teachers and College STEM Literacy Workers and the ways in which they worked together. We end with implications for a new model of excellence.

IntroductionThere is a critical need to develop innovative educational strategies that engage youth in meaningful mathematics learning, particularly students from groups that have been historically marginalized in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In this study, we explore youths’ participation in two collaborative projects from the Growing Mathletes curriculum which combines baseball contexts and mathematics. Our goal was to understand the potential of these projects to support youths’ engagement with mathematical ideas and practices, and the extent to which youth leveraged a range of resources, including prior experiences and funds of knowledge, to inform their decisions and understanding. MethodsThe Design a Stadium and Baseball Team Roster projects were implemented in two afterschool setting sites and two summer program sites with 102 youth of all genders in grades 3 to 8. Data sources included video recordings of youth participation in the project, project artifacts, and youth interviews. ResultsWe found the projects contained specific features that supported youths’ engagement in three specific mathematical practices: (1) make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, (2) reason abstractly and quantitatively, and (3) construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Additionally, there is evidence that while engaging in these projects youth drew on their own funds of knowledge to inform their decisions and understanding. ConclusionOur findings point to key implications for researchers, educators, and curriculum developers in informal STEM learning spaces.

Performing arts computing environments have received little attention in the educational sphere; yet, they offer opportunities for learners to validate their efforts, ideas, and skills through showcasing their work in a public-facing performance. In this work, we explore an out-of-school dance and computing educational program run by the organization, STEM From Dance. The organizational mission is to create an equitable learning experience for young women of color to engage with computing while exposing them to STEM careers. Through an analysis of eleven interviews with youth participants, instructors, and the executive director, we examine how the social, cultural, and political dimensions of the learning environment facilitate identity work in computing and dance. Our findings point to three primary activities used by the organization to promote equity: (1) providing psychological safety through a supportive community environment, (2) meaningfully engaging with learners’ social and cultural context through creative work with constructionist artifacts, and (3) actively promoting identity work as women of color in computing and STEM through both artifact work and community events. Applying the constructs of identity and psychological safety we explore the tensions and synergies of designing for equity in this performing arts and computing learning environment. We demonstrate how the seemingly contradictory elements of a high-stakes performance within a novice learning environment provides unique opportunities for supporting young women of color in computing, making them non-negotiable in the organization’s efforts to promote equity and inclusion. Our work illustrates how attending closely to the sociocultural dimensions in a constructionist learning environment provides lenses for navigating equity, identity work, and support for inclusive computing.
