Title: Centrality dependence of J/ψ and ψ(2S) production and nuclear modification in p-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ = 8.16 TeV
A bstract The inclusive production of the J/ ψ and ψ (2S) charmonium states is studied as a function of centrality in p-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 8 . 16 TeV at the LHC. The measurement is performed in the dimuon decay channel with the ALICE apparatus in the centre-of-mass rapidity intervals − 4 . 46 < y cms < − 2 . 96 (Pb-going direction) and 2 . 03 < y cms < 3 . 53 (p-going direction), down to zero transverse momentum ( p T ). The J/ ψ and ψ (2S) production cross sections are evaluated as a function of the collision centrality, estimated through the energy deposited in the zero degree calorimeter located in the Pb-going direction. The p T -differential J/ ψ production cross section is measured at backward and forward rapidity for several centrality classes, together with the corresponding average 〈 p T 〉 and $$ \left\langle {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^2\right\rangle $$ p T 2 values. The nuclear effects affecting the production of both charmonium states are studied using the nuclear modification factor. In the p-going direction, a suppression of the production of both charmonium states is more » observed, which seems to increase from peripheral to central collisions. In the Pb-going direction, however, the centrality dependence is different for the two states: the nuclear modification factor of the J/ ψ increases from below unity in peripheral collisions to above unity in central collisions, while for the ψ (2S) it stays below or consistent with unity for all centralities with no significant centrality dependence. The results are compared with measurements in p-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV and no significant dependence on the energy of the collision is observed. Finally, the results are compared with theoretical models implementing various nuclear matter effects. « less

  1. A bstract The production cross-sections of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 5 TeV are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 . 13 ± 0 . 18 pb − 1 , collected by the LHCb experiment. The cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity, y , and separately for J/ψ mesons produced promptly and from beauty hadron decays (nonprompt). With the assumption of unpolarised J/ψ mesons, the production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic range 0 < pmore »T < 20 GeV/ c and 2 . 0 < y < 4 . 5 are $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}{\sigma}_{\mathrm{prompt}}\ J/\psi =8.154\pm 0.010\pm 0.283\ \upmu \mathrm{b},\\ {}{\sigma}_{\mathrm{nonprompt}}\ J/\psi =0.820\pm 0.003\pm 0.034\ \upmu \mathrm{b},\end{array}} $$ σ prompt J / ψ = 8.154 ± 0.010 ± 0.283 μb , σ nonprompt J / ψ = 0.820 ± 0.003 ± 0.034 μb , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These cross-sections are compared with those at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 8 TeV and 13 TeV, and are used to update the measurement of the nuclear modification factor in proton-lead collisions for J/ψ mesons at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 TeV. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.« less
  2. A bstract The production of prompt D 0 , D + , and D *+ mesons was measured at midrapidity (| y | < 0.5) in Pb–Pb collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D mesons were reconstructed via their hadronic decay channels and their production yields were measured in central (0–10%) and semicentral (30–50%) collisions. The measurement was performed up to a transverse momentum ( p T ) of 36 or 50 GeV/c depending on the D meson species andmore »the centrality interval. For the first time in Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC, the yield of D 0 mesons was measured down to p T = 0, which allowed a model-independent determination of the p T -integrated yield per unit of rapidity (d N/ d y ). A maximum suppression by a factor 5 and 2.5 was observed with the nuclear modification factor ( R AA ) of prompt D mesons at p T = 6–8 GeV/c for the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality classes, respectively. The D-meson R AA is compared with that of charged pions, charged hadrons, and J /ψ mesons as well as with theoretical predictions. The analysis of the agreement between the measured R AA , elliptic ( v 2 ) and triangular ( v 3 ) flow, and the model predictions allowed us to constrain the charm spatial diffusion coefficient D s . Furthermore the comparison of R AA and v 2 with different implementations of the same models provides an important insight into the role of radiative energy loss as well as charm quark recombination in the hadronisation mechanisms.« less
  3. A bstract A measurement of inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ ψ production in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV is presented. The inclusive J/ ψ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at midrapidity down to a transverse momentum p T = 0. The inclusive J/ ψ nuclear modification factor R pPb is calculated by comparing the new results in p-Pb collisions to a recently measured proton-proton reference at the same centre-of-mass energy. Non-prompt J/ ψ mesons, which originate from the decay of beauty hadrons, are separated frommore »promptly produced J/ ψ on a statistical basis for p T larger than 1.0 GeV/ c . These results are based on the data sample collected by the ALICE detector during the 2016 LHC p-Pb run, corresponding to an integrated luminosity $$ \mathcal{L} $$ L int = 292 ± 11 μ b − 1 , which is six times larger than the previous publications. The total uncertainty on the p T -integrated inclusive J/ ψ and non-prompt J/ ψ cross section are reduced by a factor 1.7 and 2.2, respectively. The measured cross sections and R pPb are compared with theoretical models that include various combinations of cold nuclear matter effects. From the non-prompt J/ ψ production cross section, the $$ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $$ b b ¯ production cross section at midrapidity, $$ {\mathrm{d}\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} $$ d σ b b ¯ / d y , and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, $$ {\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} $$ σ b b ¯ , are derived.« less
  4. A bstract Measurement of Z-boson production in p-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 8 . 16 TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV is reported. It is performed in the dimuon decay channel, through the detection of muons with pseudorapidity − 4 < η μ < − 2 . 5 and transverse momentum $$ {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mu } $$ p T μ > 20 GeV/ c in the laboratory frame. The invariant yield and nuclear modification factor are measured for opposite-sign dimuons with invariant mass 60 < m μμ < 120more »GeV/ c 2 and rapidity 2 . 5 < $$ {y}_{\mathrm{cms}}^{\mu \mu} $$ y cms μμ < 4. They are presented as a function of rapidity and, for the Pb-Pb collisions, of centrality as well. The results are compared with theoretical calculations, both with and without nuclear modifications to the Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). In p-Pb collisions the center-of-mass frame is boosted with respect to the laboratory frame, and the measurements cover the backward ( − 4 . 46 < $$ {y}_{\mathrm{cms}}^{\mu \mu} $$ y cms μμ < − 2 . 96) and forward (2 . 03 < $$ {y}_{\mathrm{cms}}^{\mu \mu} $$ y cms μμ < 3 . 53) rapidity regions. For the p-Pb collisions, the results are consistent within experimental and theoretical uncertainties with calculations that include both free-nucleon and nuclear-modified PDFs. For the Pb-Pb collisions, a 3 . 4 σ deviation is seen in the integrated yield between the data and calculations based on the free-nucleon PDFs, while good agreement is found once nuclear modifications are considered.« less
  5. A bstract The inclusive J/ ψ elliptic ( v 2 ) and triangular ( v 3 ) flow coefficients measured at forward rapidity (2 . 5 < y < 4) and the v 2 measured at midrapidity (| y | < 0 . 9) in Pb-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC are reported. The entire Pb-Pb data sample collected during Run 2 is employed, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 750 μ b − 1 at forward rapidity and 93 μ b − 1 at midrapidity.more »The results are obtained using the scalar product method and are reported as a function of transverse momentum p T and collision centrality. At midrapidity, the J/ ψ v 2 is in agreement with the forward rapidity measurement. The centrality averaged results indicate a positive J/ ψ v 3 with a significance of more than 5 σ at forward rapidity in the p T range 2 < p T < 5 GeV/ c . The forward rapidity v 2 , v 3 , and v 3 /v 2 results at low and intermediate p T ( p T ≲ 8 GeV/ c ) exhibit a mass hierarchy when compared to pions and D mesons, while converging into a species-independent curve at higher p T . At low and intermediate p T , the results could be interpreted in terms of a later thermalization of charm quarks compared to light quarks, while at high p T , path-length dependent effects seem to dominate. The J/ ψ v 2 measurements are further compared to a microscopic transport model calculation. Using a simplified extension of the quark scaling approach involving both light and charm quark flow components, it is shown that the D-meson v n measurements can be described based on those for charged pions and J/ ψ flow.« less
