Title: Crystal structure of 2,3-dimethoxy- meso -tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)morpholinochlorin methylene chloride 0.44-solvate
The title morpholinochlorin, C 46 H 16 F 20 N 4 O 3 , was crystallized from hexane/methylene chloride as its 0.44 methylene chloride solvate, C 46 H 16 F 20 N 4 O 3 ·0.44CH 2 Cl 2 . The morpholinochlorin was synthesized by stepwise oxygen insertion into a porphyrin using a `breaking and mending strategy': NaIO 4 -induced diol cleavage of the corresponding 2,3-dihydroxychlorin with in situ methanol-induced, acid-catalyzed intramolecular ring closure of the intermediate secochlorins bisaldehyde. Formally, one of the pyrrolic building blocks was thus replaced by a 2,3-dimethoxymorpholine moiety. Like other morpholinochlorins, the macrocycle of the title compound adopts a ruffled conformation, and the modulation of the porphyrinic π-system chromophore induces a red-shift of its optical spectrum compared to its corresponding chlorin analog. Packing in the crystal is governed by interactions involving the fluorine atoms of the pentafluorophenyl substituents, dominated by C—H...F interactions, and augmented by short fluorine...fluorine contacts, C—F...π interactions, and one severely slipped π-stacking interaction between two pentafluorophenyl rings. The solvate methylene chloride molecule is disordered over two independent positions around an inversion center with occupancies of two × 0.241 (5) and two × 0.199 (4), for a total site occupancy of 88%.  more » « less

  1. The title chlorin, 2 Ph H 2 , hydrogen-bonded to dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), C 44 H 32 N 4 O 2 ·C 7 H 10 N 2 , and its corresponding zinc(II) complex, 2 Ph Zn , axially coordinated to ethylenediamine (EDA), [Zn(C 44 H 30 N 4 O 2 )]·C 2 H 8 N 2 , were isolated and crystallized by adventitious reduction of the corresponding osmate esters by DMAP and EDA, respectively. Known since 1996 and, inter alia , used for the preparation of a wide range of (planar and non-planar) chlorin analogues (so-called pyrrole-modified porphyrins), their conformational analyses in the solid state are important benchmarks. Both macrocycles are only modestly distorted from planarity and both are slightly more non-planar than the corresponding dimethoxy-derivative, but less planar than a free-base meso -pentafluorophenyl-based osmate ester. NSD analyses provide quantitative and qualitative analyses of the distortion modes. One origin of the non-planarity is presumably the avoidance of the eclipsed configuration of the two vic–cis diols on the pyrroline moiety; the resulting deformation of the pyrroline translates in some cases into the macrocycle. The structure of 2 Ph H 2 features voids making up ca 26% of the unit-cell volume filled with highly disordered solvate molecules (chloroform and hexanes). 2 Ph Zn crystallized with a 13.6 (4)% occupied solvate methanol molecule.

  2. Structural analyses of the compounds di-μ-acetato-κ 4 O : O ′-bis{[2-methoxy- N , N -bis(quinolin-2-ylmethyl)ethanamine-κ 4 N , N ′, N ′′, O ]manganese(II)} bis(tetraphenylborate) dichloromethane 1.45-solvate, [Mn 2 (C 23 O 2 ) 2 (C 23 H 23 N 3 O) 2 ](C 24 H 20 B)·1.45CH 2 Cl 2 or [Mn(DQMEA)(μ-OAc) 2 Mn(DQMEA)](BPh 4 ) 2 ·1.45CH 2 Cl 2 or [1] (BPh 4 ) 2 ·1.45CH 2 Cl 2 , and (acetato-κ O )[2-hydroxy- N , N -bis(quinolin-2-ylmethyl)ethanamine-κ 4 N , N ′, N ′′, O ](methanol-κ O )manganese(II) tetraphenylborate methanol monosolvate, [Mn(CH 3 COO)(C 22 H 21 N 3 O)(CH 3 OH)](C 24 H 20 B)·CH 3 OH or [Mn(DQEA)(OAc)(CH 3 OH)]BPh 4 ·CH 3 OH or [2] BPh 4 ·CH 3 OH, by single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveal distinct differences in the geometry of coordination of the tripodal DQEA and DQMEA ligands to Mn II ions. In the asymmetric unit, compound [1] (BPh 4 ) 2 ·(CH 2 Cl 2 ) 1.45 crystallizes as a dimer in which each manganese(II) center is coordinated by the central amine nitrogen, the nitrogen atom of each quinoline group, and the methoxy-oxygen of the tetradentate DQMEA ligand, and two bridging-acetate oxygen atoms. The symmetric Mn II centers have a distorted, octahedral geometry in which the quinoline nitrogen atoms are trans to each other resulting in co-planarity of the quinoline rings. For each Mn II center, a coordinated acetate oxygen participates in C—H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions with the two quinolyl moieties, further stabilizing the trans structure. Within the crystal, weak π – π stacking interactions and intermolecular cation–anion interactions stabilize the crystal packing. In the asymmetric unit, compound [2] BPh 4 ·CH 3 OH crystallizes as a monomer in which the manganese(II) ion is coordinated to the central nitrogen, the nitrogen atom of each quinoline group, and the alcohol oxygen of the tetradentate DQEA ligand, an oxygen atom of OAc, and the oxygen atom of a methanol ligand. The geometry of the Mn II center in [2] BPh 4 ·CH 3 OH is also a distorted octahedron, but the quinoline nitrogen atoms are cis to each other in this structure. Hydrogen bonding between the acetate oxygen atoms and hydroxyl (O—H...O) and quinolyl (C—H...O and N—H...O) moieties of the DQEA ligand stabilize the complex in this cis configuration. Within the crystal, dimerization of complexes occurs by the formation of a pair of intermolecular O3—H3...O2 hydrogen bonds between the coordinated hydroxyl oxygen of the DQEA ligand of one complex and an acetate oxygen of another. Additional hydrogen-bonding and intermolecular cation–anion interactions contribute to the crystal packing.

  3. Three cyclopentadienylmolybdenum(II) propionyl complexes featuring triarylphosphine ligands with different para substituents, namely, dicarbonyl(η 5 -cyclopentadienyl)propionyl(triphenylphosphane-κ P )molybdenum(II), [Mo(C 5 H 5 )(C 3 H 5 O)(C 18 H 15 P)(CO) 2 ], ( 1 ), dicarbonyl(η 5 -cyclopentadienyl)propionyl[tris(4-fluorophenyl)phosphane-κ P ]molybdenum(II), [Mo(C 5 H 5 )(C 3 H 5 O)(C 18 H 12 F 3 P)(CO) 2 ], ( 2 ), and dicarbonyl(η 5 -cyclopentadienyl)propionyl[tris(4-methoxyphenyl)phosphane-κ P ]molybdenum(II) dichloromethane solvate, [Mo(C 5 H 5 )(C 3 H 5 O)(C 21 H 21 O 3 P)(CO) 2 ]·CH 2 Cl 2 , ( 3 ), have been prepared from the corresponding ethyl complexes via phosphine-induced migratory insertion. These complexes exhibit four-legged piano-stool geometries with molecular structures quite similar to each other and to related acetyl complexes. The extended structures of the three complexes differ somewhat, with the para substituent of the triarylphosphine of ( 2 ) (fluoro) or ( 3 ) (methoxy) engaging in non-classical C—H...F or C—H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions. The structure of ( 3 ) exhibits modest disorder in the position of one Cl atom of the dichloromethane solvent, which was modeled with two sites showing approximately equivalent occupancies [0.532 (15) and 0.478 (15)].

  4. Nitrogen heterocycles are a class of organic compounds with extremely versatile functionality. Imidines, HN[C(NH) R ] 2 , are a rare class of heterocycles related to imides, HN[C(O) R ] 2 , in which the O atoms of the carbonyl groups are replaced by N—H groups. The useful synthesis of the imidine compounds succinimidine and glutarimidine, as well as their partially hydrolyzed imino–imide congeners, was first described in the mid-1950s, though structural characterization is presented for the first time in this article. In the solid state, these structures are different from the proposed imidine form: succinimidine crystallizes as an imino–amine, 2-imino-3,4-dihydro-2 H -pyrrol-5-amine, C 4 H 7 N 2 ( 1 ), glutarimidine as 6-imino-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyridin-2-amine methanol monosolvate, C 5 H 9 N 3 ·CH 3 OH ( 2 ), and the corresponding hydrolyzed imino–imide compounds as amino–amides 5-amino-3,4-dihydro-2 H -pyrrol-2-one, C 4 H 6 N 2 O ( 3 ), and 6-amino-4,5-dihydropyridin-2(3 H )-one, C 5 H 8 N 2 O ( 4 ). Imidine 1 was also determined as the hydrochloride salt solvate 5-amino-3,4-dihydro-2 H -pyrrol-2-iminium chloride–2-imino-3,4-dihydro-2 H -pyrrol-5-amine–water (1/1/1), C 4 H 8 N 3 + ·Cl − ·C 4 H 7 N 3 ·H 2 O ( 1 ·HCl). As such, 1 and 2 show alternating short and long C—N bonds across the molecule, revealing distinct imino (C=NH) and amine (C—NH 2 ) groups throughout the C—N backbone. These structures provide definitive evidence for the predominant imino–amine tautomer in the solid state, which serves to enrich the previously proposed imidine-focused structures that have appeared in organic chemistry textbooks since the discovery of this class of compounds in 1883.

  5. Two cis -dioxomolybdenum complexes based on salan ligands with different backbones are reported. The first complex, dioxido{2,2′-[l,2-phenylenebis(iminomethylene)]bis(phenolato)}molybdenum(VI) dimethylformamide disolvate, [Mo(C 20 H 18 N 2 O 2 )O 2 ]·2C 3 H 7 NO ( Ph LMoO 2 , 1b ), features a phenyl backbone, while the second complex, (6,6′-{[(cyclohexane-1,2-diyl)bis(azanediyl)]bis(methylene)}bis(2,4-di- tert -butylphenolato))dioxidomolybdenum(VI) methanol disolvate, [Mo(C 36 H 56 N 2 O 2 )O 2 ]·2CH 3 OH ( Cy LMoO 2 , 2b ), is based on a cyclohexyl backbone. These complexes crystallized as solvated species, 1b ·2DMF and 2b ·2MeOH. The salan ligands Ph LH 2 ( 1a ) and Cy LH 2 ( 2a ) coordinate to the molybdenum center in these complexes 1b and 2b in a κ 2 N ,κ 2 O fashion, forming a distorted octahedral geometry. The Mo—N and Mo—O distances are 2.3475 (16) and 1.9567 (16) Å, respectively, in 1b while the corresponding measurements are Mo—N = 2.3412 (12) Å, and Mo—O = 1.9428 (10) Å for 2b . A key geometrical feature is that the N—Mo—N angle of 72.40 (4)° in Cy LMoO 2 is slightly less than that of the Ph LMoO 2 angle of 75.18 (6)°, which is attributed to the flexibility of the cyclohexane ring between the nitrogen as compared to the rigid phenyl ring in the Ph LMoO 2 .
