A Brief Review of the Ring Current and Outstanding Problems
This paper reviews a few important concepts and findings pertaining to the ring current research. Also briefly overviewed are the sources and losses of ring current ions. Recent challenges in modeling and observations of the ring current are presented, as is a brief discussion on open questions.

Abstract The inductive component of the magnetospheric electric field, which is associated with the temporal change of magnetic field, provides an additional means of local plasma energization and transport in addition to the electrostatic counterpart. This study examines the detailed response of the inner magnetosphere to inductive electric fields and the associated electric‐driven convection corresponding to different solar wind conditions. A novel modeling capability is employed to self‐consistently simulate the electromagnetic and plasma environment of the entire magnetospheric cavity. The explicit separation of the electric field by source (inductive vs. electrostatic) and subsequent implementation of inductive effects in the ring current model allow us to investigate, for the first time, the effect of the inductive electric field on the kinetics and evolution of the ring current system. The simulation results presented in this study demonstrate that the inductive component of the electric field is capable of providing an additional source for long‐lasting plasma drifts, which in turn significantly alter the trajectories of both thermal and energetic particles. Such changes in the plasma drift, which arise due to the inductive electric fields, further reshape the storm‐time ring current morphology and alter the degree of the ring current asymmetry, as well as the timing and the peak of the ion pressure. The total ion energy is increasing at a faster rate than the supply of energetic ions to the ring current, suggesting that the inductive electric field provides effective and accumulative local energization for the trapped ring current population without confining additional particles.more » « less

Energetic particle fluxes that are part of the Earth’s ring current and radiation belts can intensify significantly during space weather events like geomagnetic storms and could cause severe damage to satellite-based technologies. Understanding the physical processes that control their dynamics and improving our capability for their prediction is thus extremely important. In the context of space weather applications and user needs, this paper provides a brief description of our kinetic ring current-atmosphere interactions model with self-consistent magnetic field (RAM-SCB) and its further extension to implement a self-consistent electric (E) field. Specific examples that demonstrate RAM-SCB capabilities and limitations to reproduce the near-Earth space weather environment are given. The current status of RAM-SCB is assessed and plans for its further improvement are discussed.more » « less

null (Ed.)Coenzyme Q (CoQ) is an essential component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain and an important antioxidant present in all cellular membranes. CoQ deficiencies are frequent in aging and in age-related diseases, and current treatments are limited to CoQ supplementation. Strategies that rely on CoQ supplementation suffer from poor uptake and trafficking of this very hydrophobic molecule. In a previous study, the dietary flavonol kaempferol was reported to serve as a CoQ ring precursor and to increase the CoQ content in kidney cells, but neither the part of the molecule entering CoQ biosynthesis nor the mechanism were described. In this study, kaempferol labeled specifically in the B-ring was isolated from Arabidopsis plants. Kidney cells treated with this compound incorporated the B-ring of kaempferol into newly synthesized CoQ, suggesting that the B-ring is metabolized via a mechanism described in plant cells. Kaempferol is a natural flavonoid present in fruits and vegetables and possesses antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory therapeutic properties. A better understanding of the role of kaempferol as a CoQ ring precursor makes this bioactive compound a potential candidate for the design of interventions aiming to increase endogenous CoQ biosynthesis and may improve CoQ deficient phenotypes in aging and disease.more » « less

null (Ed.)The aromaticity and dynamics of a set of recently proposed neutral 5- and 6-membered heterocycles that are closed by dative (donor–acceptor) or multi-center σ bonds, and have resonance forms with a Hückel number of π-electrons, are examined. The donors and acceptors in the rings include N, O, and F, and B, Be, and Mg, respectively. The planar geometry of the rings, coupled with evidence from different measures of aromaticity, namely the NICS zz , and NICS πzz components of the conventional nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS), and ring current strengths (RCS), indicate non-trivial degrees of aromaticity in certain cases, including the cyclic C 3 B 2 OH 6 and C 3 BOH 5 isomers, both with three bonds to the O site in the ring. The former is lower in energy by at least 17.6 kcal mol −1 relative to linear alternatives obtained from molecular dynamics simulations in this work. Some of the other systems examined are best described as non-aromatic. Ring opening, closing, and isomerization are observed in molecular dynamics simulations for some of the systems studied. In a few cases, the ring indeed persists.more » « less
