Title: Stable Singlet Carbenes as Organic Superbases
Abstract A simple experimental procedure for scaling carbene Brønsted basicity is described. The results highlight the strong basicity of pyrazol‐4‐ylidenes, a type of mesoionic carbene, also named cyclic‐bentallenes (CBA). They are more basic (pKaH>42.7 in acetonitrile) than the popular proazaphosphatrane Verkade bases, and even the Schwesinger phosphazene superbase P4(tBu). The basicity of these compounds can readily be tuned, and they are accessible in multigram quantities. These results open new avenues for carbon centered superbases.  more » « less

  1. Abstract A self‐assembled FeII4L6cage was synthesized with 12 internal amines in the cavity. The cage forms as the dodeca‐ammonium salt, despite the cage carrying an overall 8+ charge at the metal centers, extracting protons from displaced water in the reaction. Despite this, the basicity of the internal amines is lower than their counterparts in free solution. The 12 amines have a sliding scale of basicity, with a ≈6 pKaunit difference between the first and last protons to be removed. This moderation of side‐chain basicity in an active site is a hallmark of enzymatic catalysis.

  2. Abstract The syntheses are reported of Nϵ‐(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl)‐D,L‐lysine (tFK) and Nζ‐(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl)‐D,L‐homolysine (tFK+1) from amino alcohols HO−(CH2)n−NH2. The syntheses involve reductive amination, Appel bromination, and the stereoselective bond formation between Cα of the amino acid and the fluorinated alkyl chain in the Schöllkopf bislactim amino acid synthesis. The methyl esters of the fluorinated amino acids are the relevant substrates for oligopeptide synthesis. With theR‐Schöllkopf reagent, we stereoselectively generated methyl Nϵ‐boc‐Nϵ‐(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl)‐L‐lysinate and methyl Nζ‐boc‐Nζ‐(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl)‐L‐homolysinate. Products and intermediates were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, COSY, HSQC, and LCMS. A variety of N‐functionality may be introduced by reacting hemiacetals with different appendages. This fluorine modification reduces the sidechain N‐basicity by combined ‐I effect of the three fluorines. This effect increases the [amine]/[ammonium ion] ratio of the sidechain amine in lysine to facilitate carbamylation at lower pH conditions.

  3. Abstract The addition of non‐benzenoid quinones, acenapthenequinone or aceanthrenequinone, to the 9‐carbene‐9‐borafluorene monoanion (1) affords the first examples of dianionic 10‐membered bora‐crown ethers (2–5), which are characterized by multi‐nuclear NMR spectroscopy (1H,13C,11B), X‐ray crystallography, elemental analysis, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. These tetraoxadiborecines have distinct absorption profiles based on the positioning of the alkali metal cations. When compound4, which has a vacant C4B2O4cavity, is reacted with sodium tetrakis[3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate, a color change from purple to orange serves as a visual indicator of metal binding to the central ring, whereby the Na+ion coordinates to four oxygen atoms. A detailed theoretical analysis of the calculated reaction energetics is provided to gain insight into the reaction mechanism for the formation of2–5. These data, and the electronic structures of proposed intermediates, indicate that the reaction proceeds via a boron enolate intermediate.

  5. Abstract Relative to other cyclic poly‐phosphorus species (that is,cyclo‐Pn), the planarcyclo‐P4group is unique in its requirement of two additional electrons to achieve aromaticity. These electrons are supplied from one or more metal centers. However, the degree of charge transfer is dependent on the nature of the metal fragment. Unique examples of dianionic mononuclear η4‐P4complexes are presented that can be viewed as the simple coordination of the [cyclo‐P4]2−dianion to a neutral metal fragment. Treatment of the neutral, molybdenumcyclo‐P4complexes Mo(η4‐P4)I2(CO)(CNArDipp2)2and Mo(η4‐P4)(CO)2(CNArDipp2)2with KC8produces the dianionic, three‐legged piano stool complexes, [Mo(η4‐P4)(CO)(CNArDipp2)2]2−and [Mo(η4‐P4)(CO)2(CNArDipp2)]2−, respectively. Structural, spectroscopic, and computational studies reveal a similarity to the classic η6‐benzene complex (η6‐C6H6)Mo(CO)3regarding the metal‐center valence state and electronic population of the planar‐cyclic ligand π system.
