   Let p ∈ Z p\in {\mathbb {Z}} be an odd prime. We show that the fiber sequence for the cyclotomic trace of the sphere spectrum S {\mathbb {S}} admits an “eigensplitting” that generalizes known splittings on K K -theory and T C TC . We identify the summands in the fiber as the covers of Z p {\mathbb {Z}}_{p} -Anderson duals of summands in the K ( 1 ) K(1) -localized algebraic K K -theory of Z {\mathbb {Z}} . Analogous results hold for the ring Z {\mathbb {Z}} where we prove that the K ( 1 ) K(1) -localized fiber sequence is self-dual for Z p {\mathbb {Z}}_{p} -Anderson duality, with the duality permuting the summands by i ↦ p − i i\mapsto p-i (indexed mod p − 1 p-1 ). We explain an intrinsic characterization of the summand we call Z Z in the splitting T C ( Z ) p ∧ ≃ j ∨ Σ j ′ ∨ Z TC({\mathbb {Z}})^{\wedge }_{p}\simeq j \vee \Sigma j’\vee Z in terms of units in the p p -cyclotomic tower of Q p {\mathbb {Q}}_{p} .

4. Empathy for wildlife: The importance of the individual

   Because climate change and the biodiversity crisis are driven by human actions, determining psychological mechanisms underpinning support for environmental action is an urgent priority. Here, we experimentally tested for mechanisms promoting conservation-related motivation and behavior toward a flagship species, wild Tamanend's bottlenose dolphins. Following evidence that empathy increases prosocial motivations and behavior, and that the ability to identify individual humans promotes empathy, we tested whether this relationship applied to the ability to identify individual dolphins. Participants identified dolphins from their dorsal fins at above chance levels, and better individuation correlated with higher empathy for dolphins and higher willingness to pledge environmental behaviors. Pairing a narrative with an image of an injured dolphin leads to higher donations relative to a narrative alone. Our novel finding that the ability to individually identify dolphins relates to empathy and conservation-related behavior suggests pathways for strengthening environmental attitudes and behavior.

5. Bounds for the smallest eigenvalue of the NTK for arbitrary spherical data of arbitrary dimension

   Bounds on the smallest eigenvalue of the neural tangent kernel (NTK) are a key ingredient in the analysis of neural network optimization and memorization. How- ever, existing results require distributional assumptions on the data and are limited to a high-dimensional setting, where the input dimension d0 scales at least log- arithmically in the number of samples n. In this work we remove both of these requirements and instead provide bounds in terms of a measure of distance between data points: notably these bounds hold with high probability even when d0 is held constant versus n. We prove our results through a novel application of the hemisphere transform.
