Title: Kinetic analysis of the growth of semiconductor nanocrystals from the peak wavelength of photoluminescence
Understanding the rate processes controlling the growth of semiconductor nanocrystals in liquid solutions is of great importance in tailoring the sizes of semiconductor nanocrystals for the applications in optoelectronics, bioimaging and biosensing. In this work, we establish a simple relationship between the photoluminescence (PL) peak wavelength and the growth time of semiconductor nanocrystals under the condition that the contribution of electrostatic interaction to the quantum confinement is negligible. Using this relationship and the data available in the literature for CdSe and CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals, we demonstrate the feasibility of using the PL peak wavelength to analyze the growth behavior of the CdSe and CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals in liquid solutions. The results reveal that the diffusion of monomers in the liquid solution is the dominant rate process for the growth of CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals, and the activation energy for the growth of CdSe nanocrystals in the liquid solution is ∼9 kJ/mol. The feasibility to use this approach in the analysis of the thickness growth of core–shell nanocrystals with and without mechanical stress is also discussed. Such an approach opens a new avenue to in-situ monitor/examine the growth of semiconductor nanocrystals in liquid solutions.  more » « less

  1. Understanding the growth behavior of nanoparticles and semiconductor nanocrystals under dynamic environments is of profound importance in controlling the sizes and uniformity of the prepared nanoparticles and semiconductor nanocrystals. In this work, we develop a relation between the bandgap (the photoluminescence peak wavelength) of semiconductor nanocrystals and the total flow rate for the synthesis of semiconductor nanocrystals in microfluidic systems under the framework of the quantum confinement effect without the contribution of Coulomb interaction. Using this relation, we analyze the growth behavior of CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals synthesized in a microfluidic system by an antisolvent method in the temperature range of 303 to 363 K. The results demonstrate that the square of the average size of the CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals is inversely proportional to the total flow rate and support the developed relation. The activation energy for the rate process controlling the growth of the CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals in the microfluidic system is 2.05 kJ mol −1 . Increasing the synthesis temperature widens the size distribution of the CsPbBr 3 NCs prepared in the microfluidic system. The method developed in this work provides a simple approach to use photoluminescent characteristics to in situ monitor and analyze the growth of semiconductor nanocrystals under dynamic environments.

  2. All-inorganic nanocrystals (NCs) are of great importance in a range of electronic devices. However, current all-inorganic NCs suffer from limitations in their optical properties, such as low fluorescence efficiencies. Here, we develop a general surface treatment strategy to obtain intensely luminescent all-inorganic NCs (ILANs) by using designed metal salts with noncoordinating anions that play a dual role in the surface treatment process: (i) removing the original organic ligands and (ii) binding to unpassivated Lewis basic sites to preserve the photoluminescent (PL) properties of the NCs. The absolute photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of red-emitting CdSe/ZnS NCs, green-emitting CdSe/CdZnSeS/ZnS NCs and blue-emitting CdZnS/ZnS NCs in polar solvents are 97%, 80% and 72%, respectively. Further study reveals that the passivated Lewis basic sites of ILANs by metal cations boost the efficiency of radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs. While the passivation of Lewis basic sites leads to a high PLQY of ILANs, the exposed Lewis acidic sites provide the possibility for in situ tuning of the functions of NCs, creating opportunities for direct optical patterning of functional NCs with high resolution.

  3. Metal–semiconductor hybrid nanomaterials (HNMs) exhibit unique properties that are distinct from individual nanostructures, leading to promising applications in optical technologies. The interfacial linkage of semiconductor and metal nanoparticles (NPs) via cogelation is an effective strategy to produce HNMs that show strong plasmon‐exciton coupling and improved physical properties. However, optical properties of these hybrids show little to no tunability. Herein, CdSe/Ag hybrid aerogels that show tunable absorption and photoluminescence (PL) are produced by cogelation of CdSe nanorods (NRs) or NPs with Ag hollow NPs. Hybrid electronic states are created by overlapping the excitonic absorption of CdSe NRs or NPs with the plasmonic absorption of Ag NPs. Physical characterization of the hybrids reveals an interconnected network of hexagonal CdSe and cubic Ag NPs, linked by Ag+and Se2−surface species, without intervening ligands. PL spectra exhibit maxima at 640 and 720 nm for the CdSe NPs/Ag and CdSe NRs/Ag hybrids, respectively, corresponding to new radiative decay mechanisms. Time‐resolved PL data support the emergence of new radiative pathways, kinetically and energetically distinct from the excitonic and plasmonic properties of primary NPs. This new approach of metal–semiconductor hybrid formation through cogelation is intriguing for the design of high‐efficiency HNMs without detrimental PL quenching.

  4. Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) can function as efficient gain materials with chemical versatility because of their surface ligands. Because the properties of NCs in solution are sensitive to ligand–environment interactions, local chemical changes can result in changes in the optical response. However, amplification of the optical response is technically challenging because of colloidal instability at NC concentrations needed for sufficient gain to overcome losses. This paper demonstrates liquid lasing from plasmonic lattice cavities integrated with ligand-engineered CdZnS/ZnS NCs dispersed in toluene and water. By taking advantage of calcium ion-induced aggregation of NCs in aqueous solutions, we show how lasing threshold can be used as a transduction signal for ion detection. Our work highlights how NC solutions and plasmonic lattices with open cavity architectures can serve as a biosensing platform for lab-on-chip devices.

  5. The applications of semiconductor nanocrystals in optoelectronics are based on the unique characteristic of quantum confinement. There is great interest to tailor the performance of optoelectronic nanodevices and systems through the control of the sizes of nanocrystals. In this work, we develop a general mathematical formulation for the growth of a crystal/particle in a liquid solution, which takes account of the combinational effect of diffusion-limited growth and reaction-limited growth, and formulate the growth equations for the size of a cubic crystal grown under three different scenarios – isothermal and isochoric conditions, isothermal growth with the evaporation and/or extraction of the solvent and isochoric growth with continuous change in temperature. For the growth of a cubic crystal under isothermal and isochoric conditions, there are three growth stages – linear growth, nonlinear growth and plateau, and the growth rate in the stage of linear growth and the final size of the cubic crystal are dependent on the degree of supersaturation. For the growth of multi-crystals with a Gaussian distribution of crystal sizes, the change of the monomer concentration in a liquid solution is dependent on the change rates of average size and the standard deviation of the crystal sizes.
