Title: Bicultural competence and academic adjustment across youth adaptation from high school to their first years in college.
This study investigated the association between bicultural competence and academic adjustment (i.e., engagement, efficacy, achievement) among 193 Latino youth (65.3% female; 89.1% U.S.-born) followed from senior high school year (Mage = 17.58 years, SD = .53) to fifth college semester (2017-2019). Latent growth analyses revealed that youth’s overall bicultural competence trajectory was moderately high and stable across this period. Youth who maintained or increased bicultural competence levels over time (slopes) demonstrated greater self-efficacy. Youth with greater high school bicultural competence (intercepts) demonstrated higher engagement but lower achievement. No other associations emerged. This study highlights that the promoting influence of bicultural competence may not extend to all indicators of academic adjustment but may depend upon the contexts and demands they navigate. This study investigated ethnic-racial identity developmental processes (i.e., exploration and resolution) as pathways for adolescents to develop global bicultural competence, or the ability to meet heritage and host cultural demands. The sample included 749 U.S. Mexican-origin youth (30% Mexico-born; 51% male) followed from early-to-late adolescence (Mage = 12.79 to 17.38 years). Longitudinal structural equation analyses revealed that youth’s sequential engagement in ethnic-racial identity exploration and resolution (from early-to-middle adolescence) promoted global bicultural competence in late adolescence. Findings highlight the benefits of achieving clarity about one’s ethnic-racial identity via self-exploration efforts for adolescents’ ability to respond effectively to bicultural demands. This study advances mechanisms via which ethnic-racial identity development may support youth adaptation to multiple cultural systems.

  2. Incorporating both heritage (e.g., Latino) and national (e.g., American) cultural systems into our sense of self (i.e., bicultural identity) and developing the ability to successfully respond to demands associated with each of these systems (i.e., bicultural competence) have been theorized to be central to the development and positive adjustment of U.S. Latinos, a group that represents a large segment of the country’s population. In this comprehensive review, we examined empirical research on biculturalism among U.S. Latinos spanning four decades (1980-2020), with a focus on synthesizing the field’s understanding of antecedents and consequents associated with biculturalism and identifying directions for future research. Our review of 152 empirical articles revealed that this literature was characterized by multiple approaches to the conceptualization (i.e., dual-cultural adaptation, dual-cultural identities, bicultural identity integration, and bicultural competence) and subsequent operationalization of biculturalism. Although each conceptualization has different implications for the conclusions that can be drawn regarding an aspect or facet of biculturalism and potential influence on adjustment, a significant majority (78%) of studies, across conceptualizations, provided evidence supporting a positive association between biculturalism and Latinos’ adjustment. In addition, a relatively small body of qualitative work was identified, and findings largely informed potential antecedents of biculturalism. We review this literature with attention to: the aspects of biculturalism that are associated with Latinos’ adjustment (i.e., psychosocial and physical health), how sample characteristics may limit the generalizability of this work, and important directions for future research both in terms of conceptualization and study design.

  3. Disasters may have significant and lasting impacts on educational programs and academic achievement, yet the examination of differing patterns of school recovery after disasters is understudied. This paper focused on two aims: (i) identification of school academic recovery trajectories; and (ii) examination of potential risk factors associated with these trajectories. We used latent class growth analysis to identify school academic recovery trajectories for a cohort of 462 Texas public schools that were in the path of Hurricane Ike in 2008. Using Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) data from 2005 to 2011, we found that attendance and percent of economically disadvantaged youth emerged as significant risk factors for two identified academic recovery trajectories (High-Stable and Low-Interrupted). Higher levels of economically disadvantaged youth were associated with lower likelihood of falling in the High-Stable trajectory, relative to the Low-Interrupted trajectory. Higher levels of attendance were associated with higher likelihood of membership in the High-Stable trajectory, relative to the Low-Interrupted trajectory. These findings are consistent with the notion that disasters do not affect all people or communities equally. Findings highlight the need for policy initiatives that focus on low performing schools, as these schools are at highest risk for adverse outcomes post-disaster.

  4. Research suggests autobiographical memory plays an important role in shaping identity and directing future behavior. This mixed-methods exploratory study examined the narrative qualities of autobiographical memories related to students’ interest in careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields and their associations with scores on measures of science identity, imposter phenomenon, and academic achievement (i.e., grades in STEM courses and number of STEM courses taken) among 105 participants of a U.S. National Science Foundation-funded academic support program for low-income STEM students. The inductive categorization of participants’ narratives revealed ten distinct thematic domains: family and peer influences, transformative STEM experiences, career shifts, personal growth, overcoming adversity, role models, early interest, supportive mentorship, diversity and representation, and recognition of aptitude. These narratives were further examined for vocational needs and values based on the Theory of Work Adjustment. Intrinsic motivation, achievement, and status were the most prevalent vocational values identified, followed by altruism, autonomy, comfort, and safety. Finally, we applied the Narrative Identity Framework to assess each narrative in terms of motivational and affective themes (i.e., agency, communion, affective tone), autobiographical reasoning (i.e., meaning-making), and structural aspects (i.e., specificity, context, chronology). Higher narrative specificity was prospectively associated with a greater number of STEM courses completed. Science identity was positively associated with narrative context, theme, and meaning-making. The current study underscores the potential relevance of personal storytelling to academic adjustment and lays the groundwork for future research to elucidate the mechanisms linking personal narratives to STEM engagement, persistence, and achievement.

  5. Abstract Parents' familism values predict a variety of Latinx American youth's academic adjustment. However, it is unclear how cultural values such as familism interact with youth's brain development, which is sensitive to sociocultural input, to shape their academic adjustment. Using a sample of 1916 Latinx American youth (mean age = 9.90 years, SD = .63 years; 50% girls) and their primary caregivers (mean age = 38.43 years, SD = 6.81 years; 90% mothers) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, this study examined the longitudinal relation between parents' familism values and youth's school disengagement, as well as the moderating role of youth's neural sensitivity to personal reward. Parents' familism values predicted youth's decreased school disengagement 1 year later, adjusting for their baseline school disengagement and demographic covariates. Notably, this association was more salient among youth who showed lower (vs. higher) neural activation in the ventral striatum and the lateral OFC during the anticipation of a personal reward. These findings underscore the protective role of familism for Latinx American youth, highlighting the necessity of developing culturally informed interventions that take into consideration a youth's brain development.
