Due to the proliferation of IoT and the popularity of smart contracts mediated by blockchain, smart home systems have become capable of providing privacy and security to their occupants. In blockchain-based home automation systems, business logic is handled by smart contracts securely. However, a blockchain-based solution is inherently resource-intensive, making it unsuitable for resource-constrained IoT devices. Moreover, time-sensitive actions are complex to perform in a blockchainbased solution due to the time required to mine a block. In this work, we propose a blockchain-independent smart contract infrastructure suitable for resource-constrained IoT devices. Our proposed method is also capable of executing time-sensitive business logic. As an example of an end-to-end application, we describe a smart camera system using our proposed method, compare this system with an existing blockchain-based solution, and present an empirical evaluation of their performance.

This research paper describes the design of a device that can assist seniors or people with physical or cognitive limitations to take their prescribed medications that are in the form of pills on time while verifying that such pills have been actually consumed. The design consists of a portable smart pill dispenser that will rest on a base, allowing it to dispense pills into a smart cup. The smart pill dispenser uses a stepper motor to rotate to a desired pills based on a specific time slot/day of the week. The smart cup attached to the pill box uses an accelerometer, gyroscope, and an IR proximity sensor to detect if a user is taking the medication by how much the smart cup is lifted and tilted. The smart cup will inform the smart pill dispenser if the pills are properly consumed or not, thus, allowing the device to potentially aid the patients to have a healthier life.more » « less

With 'smart' technology becoming more prevalent in homes, computing is increasingly embedded into everyday life. The benefits are well-advertised, but the risks associated with these technologies are not as clearly articulated. We aim to address this gap by educating community members on some of these risks, and providing actionable advice to mitigate risks. To this end, we describe our efforts to design and implement a hands-on workshop for the public on smart-home security and privacy. Our workshop curriculum centers on the smart-home device lifecycle: obtaining, installing, using, and removing devices in a home. For each phase of the lifecycle, we present possible vulnerabilities along with preventative measures relevant to a general audience. We integrate a hands-on activity for participants to put best-practices into action throughout the presentation. We ran our workshop at a science museum in June 2023, and we used participant surveys to evaluate the effectiveness of our curriculum. Prior to the workshop, 38.8% of survey responses did not meet learning objectives, 22.4% partially met them, and 38.8% fully met them. After the workshop, only 9.2% of responses did not meet learning objectives, while 29.6% partially met them and 61.2% fully met them. Our experience shows that consumer-focused workshops can aid in bridging information gaps and are a promising form of outreach.more » « less
