Title: Effect of age and sex in renal function by ultrasound and serum chemistry in two primate species ( Alouatta caraya and Sapajus apella )
Background: Comparative studies of kidney morphophysiology in nonhuman primates can help us investigate interspecies differences in growth and aging patterns. Methods: We tested the effect of age and sex in renal morphophysiology in 21 Alouatta caraya and 21 Sapajus apella (age range = 0.5-26 years) by ultrasound, red blood cell (RBC) count, and kidney function tests. Results: A. caraya had greater growth rate and absolute renal volume than S. apella, but the latter showed a greater relative renal volume and RBC count. There was a negative relationship between RBC and age, a positive relationship between creatinine and body mass, and an apparent negative relationship between creatinine and age only in S. apella. Conclusions: Our results indicate that A. caraya has a faster aging mechanism than S. apella, and the higher relative kidney volume in S. apella is suggestive of high metabolic demands in this species. Abstract BackgroundEvaluation of blood parameters in captive non‐human primates (NHPs) is crucial for monitoring their health and ensuring that their environment meets their physiological requirements. MethodsWe performed hemogram, serum biochemistry, and parasitological exams in 20 howler monkeys and 21 capuchin monkeys. ResultsIn both species, over 50% of the individuals presented at least one parasite. There was a negative effect of age on red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell, platelets, total protein, globulin, and alkaline phosphatase, and a positive effect on the A:G ratio, gamma‐glutamyl transferase, and mean platelet volume (MPV). Capuchin monkeys presented the highest platelets and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) values and howler monkeys presented the highest MPV, aspartate aminotransferase, ALT, amylase, glucose, bilirubin, and triglycerides values. We observed an interaction between species and sex on RBC, Htc, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, and cholesterol. ConclusionsSpecies differences found in blood parameters may reflect differences in physiological adaptations associated with ecological and morphological traits and are clinically relevant for evaluating animal health and the suitability of breeding programs.

  2. Background Dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate is the most abundant circulating androgen in humans and other catarrhines. It is involved in several biological functions, such as testosterone production, glucocorticoid antagonist actions, neurogenesis and neuroplasticty. Although the role of dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEAS) in cognition remains elusive, the DHEAS/cortisol ratio has been positively associated with a slower cognitive age-decline and improved mood in humans. Whether this relationship is found in nonhuman primates remains unknown. Methods We measured DHEAS and cortisol levels in serum of 107 adult chimpanzees to investigate the relationship between DHEAS levels and age. A subset of 21 chimpanzees was used to test the potential associations between DHEAS, cortisol, and DHEAS/cortisol ratio in cognitive function, taking into account age, sex, and their interactions. We tested for cognitive function using the primate cognitive test battery (PCTB) and principal component analyses to categorize cognition into three components: spatial relationship tasks, tool use and social communication tasks, and auditory-visual sensory perception tasks. Results DHEAS levels, but not the DHEAS/cortisol ratio, declined with age in chimpanzees. Our analyses for spatial relationships tasks revealed a significant, positive correlation with the DHEAS/cortisol ratio. Tool use and social communication had a negative relationship with age. Our data show that the DHEAS/cortisol ratio, but not DHEAS individually, is a promising predictor of spatial cognition in chimpanzees.

  3. ABSTRACT ObjectivesOdontoblasts lining the pulp cavity deposit dentine throughout life, meaning the volume of the pulp cavity decreases with age. Primates with more abrasive diets have relatively higher molar pulp volume in their unworn molars than those with less abrasive diets. We propose that species with more abrasive diets deposit additional dentine across their lifespans to help resist wear and extend the effective lifespan of their molars. Whereas both age and wear affect dentine deposition, it is unknown which of these two variables has the greater impact. Materials and MethodsWe measured pulp volume and calculated wear from micro‐CT scans of lower first molars of captive‐bredMacaca fascicularis(n = 13) of known age. We used reduced major axis regressions (alpha = 0.05) to test if age or wear was a better predictor of pulp volume. ResultsBoth variables have a significant negative relationship with pulp volume (age:p = 0.004,R2 = 0.546; wear:p < 0.001,R2 = 0.890). A mixed linear model of pulp volume against wear as main effect and age as covariant had a non‐significant interaction effect (p = 0.078) and confirmed that both age (p = 0.030) and wear (p = 0.004) are significantly negatively correlated with pulp volume. DiscussionResults suggest that whereas pulp volume decreases with age, wear is more strongly correlated with decreasing pulp volume. These findings have implications for interpreting odontoblast activity in response to sensory feedback and the relationship between pulp volume and diet. These results also have implications for using molar pulp volume to estimate age at death in humans.

  4. Abstract Nonhuman primates are an essential part of tropical biodiversity and play key roles in many ecosystem functions, processes, and services. However, the impact of climate variability on nonhuman primates, whether anthropogenic or otherwise, remains poorly understood. In this study, we utilized age‐structured matrix population models to assess the population viability and demographic variability of a population of geladas (Theropithecus gelada) in the Simien Mountains, Ethiopia with the aim of revealing any underlying climatic influences. Using data from 2008 to 2019 we calculated annual, time‐averaged, and stochastic population growth rates (λ) and investigated relationships between vital rate variability and monthly cumulative rainfall and mean temperature. Our results showed that under the prevailing environmental conditions, the population will increase (λs = 1.021). Significant effects from rainfall and/or temperature variability were widely detected across vital rates; only the first year of infant survival and the individual years of juvenile survival were definitively unaffected. Generally, the higher temperature in the hot‐dry season led to lower survival and higher fecundity, while higher rainfall in the hot‐dry season led to increased survival and fecundity. Overall, these results provide evidence of greater effects of climate variability across a wider range of vital rates than those found in previous primate demography studies. This highlights that although primates have often shown substantial resilience to the direct effects of climate change, their vulnerability may vary with habitat type and across populations.

  5. Biomarkers including reproductive hormones and indicators of energy balance can be used to analyze health status in wild animals. Non-invasive measures, analyzed through urine or feces, enable biomarker monitoring without interfering with organisms, important for critically endangered species like orangutans. A measure of urine concentration such as creatinine concentrations or specific gravity is necessary when analyzing urine samples. Here, we measure specific gravity in urine samples from three captive female orangutans using a digital hand-held urine specific gravity refractometer. We compare specific gravity to previously measured creatinine values for two orangutans, and assess the influence of time of collection and refractometer temperature on specific gravity for all three. We found a significant positive correlation between specific gravity and creatinine concentrations (N=1021, Pearson’s R=0.578, p<0.001). While we found no significant correlation between the time that samples were collected and specific gravity readings (N= 314, Pearson’s R = 0.079, p=0.17), readings from samples collected in the morning were slightly but significantly lower (N=255, mean=1.008) than samples collected in the afternoon (N=60, mean=1.009) (independent samples t-test, t312=-1.969, p=0.05). We found a significant negative correlation between specific gravity and the refractometer temperature (Pearson’s R=-0.23, p<0.001). In future studies, specific gravity can be used to determine urine concentration rather than creatinine, which is more costly and requires more time for lab work. Our future research will examine the correlation between specific gravity and creatinine concentrations as orangutans age, and the effects of aging on muscle wasting and reproductive status.
