Title: $$\mathrm {K_S}^{0}$$- and (anti-)$$\Lambda $$-hadron correlations in pp collisions at $${\sqrt{s}} = 13$$ TeV
Abstract Two-particle Azimuthal correlations are measured with the ALICE apparatus in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 13$$ s = 13 TeV to explore strangeness- and multiplicity-related effects in the fragmentation of jets and the transition regime between bulk and hard production, probed with the condition that a strange meson ( $$\mathrm {K_S}^{0}$$ K S 0 ) or baryon ( $$\Lambda $$ Λ ) with transverse momentum $$p_{\mathrm T} >3$$ p T > 3 GeV/ $$c$$ c is produced. Azimuthal correlations between kaons or $$\Lambda $$ Λ hyperons with other hadrons are presented at midrapidity for a broad range of the trigger ( $$3< p_\mathrm {T}^\mathrm {trigg} < 20$$ 3 < p T trigg < 20 GeV/ $$c$$ c ) and associated particle $$p_{\mathrm T}$$ p T (1 GeV/ $$c$$ c $$< p_\mathrm {T}^\mathrm {assoc} < p_\mathrm {T}^\mathrm {trigg} $$ < p T assoc < p T trigg ), for minimum-bias events and as a function of the event multiplicity. The near- and away-side peak yields are compared for the case of either $$\mathrm {K_S}^{0}$$ K S 0 or $$\Lambda $$ Λ ( $${\overline{\Lambda }}$$ Λ ¯ ) being the trigger particle with that of inclusive hadrons (a sample dominated by pions). In addition, the measurements are compared with predictions from PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC event generators.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Two-particle correlations with $$\textrm{K}^{0}_\mathrm{{S}}$$ K S 0 , $$\Lambda $$ Λ / $$\overline{\Lambda }$$ Λ ¯ , and charged hadrons as trigger particles in the transverse momentum range $$8{<}p_{{\textrm{T}},{\textrm{trig}}}{<}16$$ 8 < p T , trig < 16  GeV/ $$c$$ c , and associated charged particles within $$1{<}p_{{\textrm{T}},{\textrm{assoc}}}{<}8$$ 1 < p T , assoc < 8  GeV/ $$c$$ c , are studied at midrapidity in pp and central Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision $$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}~=~5.02$$ s NN = 5.02  TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. After subtracting the contributions of the flow background, the per-trigger yields are extracted on both the near and away sides, and the ratio in Pb–Pb collisions with respect to pp collisions ( $$I_{\textrm{AA}}$$ I AA ) is computed. The per-trigger yield in Pb–Pb collisions on the away side is strongly suppressed to the level of $$I_{\textrm{AA}}$$ I AA $$\approx 0.6$$ ≈ 0.6 for $$p_{{\textrm{T}},{\textrm{assoc}}}>3$$ p T , assoc > 3  GeV/ $$c$$ c as expected from strong in-medium energy loss, while an enhancement develops at low $$p_{{\textrm{T}},{\textrm{assoc}}}$$ p T , assoc on both the near and away sides, reaching $$I_{\textrm{AA}}$$ I AA $$\approx 1.8$$ ≈ 1.8 and 2.7 respectively. These findings are in good agreement with previous ALICE measurements from two-particle correlations triggered by neutral pions ( $$\pi ^{0}$$ π 0 –h) and charged hadrons (h–h) in Pb–Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}~=~2.76$$ s NN = 2.76  TeV. Moreover, the correlations with $$\textrm{K}^{0}_\mathrm{{S}}$$ K S 0 mesons and $$\Lambda $$ Λ / $$\overline{\Lambda }$$ Λ ¯ baryons as trigger particles are compared to those of inclusive charged hadrons. The results are compared with the predictions of Monte Carlo models.

    Abstract The production of $$\pi ^{\pm }$$ π ± , $$\mathrm{K}^{\pm }$$ K ± , $$\mathrm{K}^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 , $$\mathrm{K}^{*}(892)^{0}$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 , $$\mathrm{p}$$ p , $$\phi (1020)$$ ϕ ( 1020 ) , $$\Lambda $$ Λ , $$\Xi ^{-}$$ Ξ - , $$\Omega ^{-}$$ Ω - , and their antiparticles was measured in inelastic proton–proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s}$$ s = 13 TeV at midrapidity ( $$|y|<0.5$$ | y | < 0.5 ) as a function of transverse momentum ( $$p_{\mathrm{T}}$$ p T ) using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. Furthermore, the single-particle $$p_{\mathrm{T}}$$ p T distributions of $$\mathrm{K}^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 , $$\Lambda $$ Λ , and $$\overline{\Lambda }$$ Λ ¯ in inelastic pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 7$$ s = 7  TeV are reported here for the first time. The $$p_{\mathrm{T}}$$ p T distributions are studied at midrapidity within the transverse momentum range $$0\le p_{\mathrm{T}}\le 20$$ 0 ≤ p T ≤ 20 GeV/ c , depending on the particle species. The $$p_{\mathrm{T}}$$ p T spectra, integrated yields, and particle yield ratios are discussed as a function of collision energy and compared with measurements at lower $$\sqrt{s}$$ s and with results from various general-purpose QCD-inspired Monte Carlo models. A hardening of the spectra at high $$p_{\mathrm{T}}$$ p T with increasing collision energy is observed, which is similar for all particle species under study. The transverse mass and $$x_{\mathrm{T}}\equiv 2p_{\mathrm{T}}/\sqrt{s}$$ x T ≡ 2 p T / s scaling properties of hadron production are also studied. As the collision energy increases from $$\sqrt{s}$$ s = 7–13 TeV, the yields of non- and single-strange hadrons normalized to the pion yields remain approximately constant as a function of $$\sqrt{s}$$ s , while ratios for multi-strange hadrons indicate enhancements. The $$p_\mathrm{{T}}$$ p T -differential cross sections of $$\pi ^{\pm }$$ π ± , $$\mathrm {K}^{\pm }$$ K ± and $$\mathrm {p}$$ p ( $$\overline{\mathrm{p}}$$ p ¯ ) are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations, which are found to overestimate the cross sections for $$\pi ^{\pm }$$ π ± and $$\mathrm{p}$$ p ( $$\overline{\mathrm{p}}$$ p ¯ ) at high $$p_\mathrm{{T}}$$ p T .

  3. Abstract Angular correlations of heavy-flavour and charged particles in high-energy proton–proton collisions are sensitive to the production mechanisms of heavy quarks and to their fragmentation as well as hadronisation processes. The measurement of the azimuthal-correlation function of prompt D mesons with charged particles in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s} = 13$$ s = 13  TeV with the ALICE detector is reported, considering $$\mathrm D^{0} $$ D 0 , $$\mathrm D^{+} $$ D + , and $$\mathrm D^{*+} $$ D ∗ + mesons in the transverse-momentum interval $$3< p_{\mathrm{T}} < 36$$ 3 < p T < 36  GeV/ $$c$$ c at midrapidity ( $$|y| < 0.5$$ | y | < 0.5 ), and charged particles with $$p_{\mathrm{T}} > 0.3$$ p T > 0.3  GeV/ $$c$$ c and pseudorapidity $$|\eta | < 0.8$$ | η | < 0.8 . This measurement has an improved precision and provides an extended transverse-momentum coverage compared to previous ALICE measurements at lower energies. The study is also performed as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity, showing no modifications of the correlation function with multiplicity within uncertainties. The properties and the transverse-momentum evolution of the near- and away-side correlation peaks are studied and compared with predictions from various Monte Carlo event generators. Among those considered, PYTHIA8 and POWHEG+PYTHIA8 provide the best description of the measured observables. The obtained results can provide guidance on tuning the generators.

Abstract This paper presents the measurements of $$\pi ^{\pm }$$ π ± , $$\mathrm {K}^{\pm }$$ K ± , $$\text {p}$$ p and $$\overline{\mathrm{p}} $$ p ¯ transverse momentum ( $$p_{\text {T}}$$ p T ) spectra as a function of charged-particle multiplicity density in proton–proton (pp) collisions at $$\sqrt{s}\ =\ 13\ \text {TeV}$$ s = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Such study allows us to isolate the center-of-mass energy dependence of light-flavour particle production. The measurements reported here cover a $$p_{\text {T}}$$ p T range from 0.1 to 20 $$\text {GeV}/c$$ GeV / c and are done in the rapidity interval $$|y|<0.5$$ | y | < 0.5 . The $$p_{\text {T}}$$ p T -differential particle ratios exhibit an evolution with multiplicity, similar to that observed in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s}\ =\ 7\ \text {TeV}$$ s = 7 TeV , which is qualitatively described by some of the hydrodynamical and pQCD-inspired models discussed in this paper. Furthermore, the $$p_{\text {T}}$$ p T -integrated hadron-to-pion yield ratios measured in pp collisions at two different center-of-mass energies are consistent when compared at similar multiplicities. This also extends to strange and multi-strange hadrons, suggesting that, at LHC energies, particle hadrochemistry scales with particle multiplicity the same way under different collision energies and colliding systems.

The production of strange hadrons ($$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$KS0, Λ, Ξ±, and Ω±), baryon-to-meson ratios (Λ/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$KS0, Ξ/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$KS0, and Ω/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$KS0), and baryon-to-baryon ratios (Ξ/Λ, Ω/Λ, and Ω/Ξ) associated with jets and the underlying event were measured as a function of transverse momentum (pT) in pp collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$s= 13 TeV and p Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$sNN= 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive production of the same particle species and the corresponding ratios are also reported. The production of multi-strange hadrons, Ξ±and Ω±, and their associated particle ratios in jets and in the underlying event are measured for the first time. In both pp and p–Pb collisions, the baryon-to-meson and baryon-to-baryon yield ratios measured in jets differ from the inclusive particle production for low and intermediate hadronpT(0.6–6 GeV/c). Ratios measured in the underlying event are in turn similar to those measured for inclusive particle production. In pp collisions, the particle production in jets is compared with Pythia8 predictions with three colour-reconnection implementation modes. None of them fully reproduces the data in the measured hadronpTregion. The maximum deviation is observed for Ξ±and Ω±which reaches a factor of about six. The event multiplicity dependence is further investigated in p−Pb collisions. In contrast to what is observed in the underlying event, there is no significant event-multiplicity dependence for particle production in jets. The presented measurements provide novel constraints on hadronisation and its Monte Carlo description. In particular, they demonstrate that the fragmentation of jets alone is insufficient to describe the strange and multi-strange particle production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.
