Abstract Using deep near-infrared Keck/MOSFIRE observations, we analyze the rest-optical spectra of eight star-forming galaxies in the COSMOS and GOODS-N fields. We reach integration times of ∼10 hr in the deepest bands, pushing the limits on current ground-based observational capabilities. The targets fall into two redshift bins, of five galaxies atz∼ 1.7 and three galaxies atz∼ 2.5, and were selected as likely to yield significant auroral-line detections. Even with long integration times, detection of the auroral lines remains challenging. We stack the spectra together into subsets based on redshift, improving the signal-to-noise ratio on the [Oiii]λ4364 auroral emission line and, in turn, enabling a direct measurement of the oxygen abundance for each stack. We compare these measurements to commonly employed strong-line ratios alongside measurements from the literature. We find that the stacks fall within the distribution ofz> 1 literature measurements, but a larger sample size is needed to robustly constrain the relationships between strong-line ratios and oxygen abundance at high redshift. We additionally report detections of [Oi]λ6302 for nine individual galaxies and composite spectra of 21 targets in the MOSFIRE pointings. We plot their line ratios on the [Oiii]λ5008/Hβversus [Oi]λ6302/Hαdiagnostic diagram, comparing our targets to local galaxies and Hiiregions. We find that the [Oi]/Hαratios in our sample of galaxies are consistent with being produced in gas ionized byα-enhanced massive stars, as has been previously inferred for rapidly forming galaxies at early cosmic times.

Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam z-Broadband Excess Selection of Extreme Emission Line Galaxies at z < 1
Abstract We present a search for extreme emission line galaxies (EELGs) at z < 1 in the COSMOS and North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) fields with imaging from Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) and a combination of new and existing spectroscopy. We select EELGs on the basis of substantial excess flux in the z broad band, which is sensitive to H α at 0.3 ≲ z ≲ 0.42 and [O iii ] λ 5007 at 0.7 ≲ z ≲ 0.86. We identify 10,470 galaxies with z excesses in the COSMOS data set and 91,385 in the NEP field. We cross-reference the COSMOS EELG sample with the zCOSMOS and DEIMOS 10k spectral catalogs, finding 1395 spectroscopic matches. We made an additional 71 (46 unique) spectroscopic measurements with Y < 23 using the HYDRA multiobject spectrograph on the WIYN 3.5 m telescope, and 204 spectroscopic measurements from the DEIMOS spectrograph on the Keck II telescope, providing a total of 1441/10,470 spectroscopic redshifts for the EELG sample in COSMOS (∼14%). We confirm that 1418 (∼98%) are H α or [O iii ] λ 5007 emitters in the above stated redshift ranges. We also identify 240 redshifted H α and [O iii ] λ 5007 emitters in the NEP using spectra taken with WIYN/HYDRA and Keck/DEIMOS. Using broadband-selection techniques in the g − r − i color space, we distinguish between H α and [O iii ] λ 5007 emitters with 98.6% accuracy. We test our EELG selection by constructing H α and [O iii ] λ 5007 luminosity functions and comparing to recent literature results. We conclude that broadband magnitudes from HSC, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, and other deep optical multiband surveys can be used to select EELGs in a straightforward manner.

Abstract We analyze a sample of 25 [Ne v ] ( λ 3426) emission-line galaxies at 1.4 < z < 2.3 using Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 G102 and G141 grism observations from the CANDELS Ly α Emission at Reionization (CLEAR) survey. [Ne v ] emission probes extremely energetic photoionization (creation potential of 97.11 eV) and is often attributed to energetic radiation from active galactic nuclei (AGNs), shocks from supernovae, or an otherwise very hard ionizing spectrum from the stellar continuum. In this work, we use [Ne v ] in conjunction with other rest-frame UV/optical emission lines ([O ii ] λ λ 3726, 3729, [Ne iii ] λ 3869, H β , [O iii ] λ λ 4959, 5007, H α +[N ii ] λ λ 6548, 6583, [S ii ] λ λ 6716, 6731), deep (2–7 Ms) X-ray observations (from Chandra), and mid-infrared imaging (from Spitzer) to study the origin of this emission and to place constraints on the nature of the ionizing engine. The majority of the [Ne v ]-detected galaxies have properties consistent with ionization from AGNs. However, for our [Ne v ]-selected sample, the X-ray luminosities are consistent with local ( z ≲ 0.1) X-ray-selected Seyferts, but the [Ne v ] luminosities are more consistent with those from z ∼ 1 X-ray-selected QSOs. The excess [Ne v ] emission requires either reduced hard X-rays or a ∼0.1 keV excess. We discuss possible origins of the apparent [Ne v ] excess, which could be related to the “soft (X-ray) excess” observed in some QSOs and Seyferts and/or be a consequence of a complex/anisotropic geometry for the narrow-line region, combined with absorption from a warm, relativistic wind ejected from the accretion disk. We also consider implications for future studies of extreme high-ionization systems in the epoch of reionization ( z ≳ 6) with the James Webb Space Telescope.more » « less

Abstract We characterize the multiphase circumgalactic medium (CGM) and galaxy properties atz= 6.0–6.5 in four quasar fields from the James Webb Space Telescope A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE) program. We use the Very Large Telescope/X-shooter spectra of quasar J0305–3150 to identify one new metal absorber atz= 6.2713 with multiple transitions (Oi, Mgii, Feii, and Cii). They are combined with the published absorbing systems in Davies et al. at the same redshift range to form a sample of nine metal absorbers atz= 6.03–6.49. We identify eight galaxies within 1000 km s−1and 350 kpc around the absorbing gas from the ASPIRE spectroscopic data, with their redshifts secured by [Oiii] (λλ4959, 5007) doublets and Hβemission lines. Our spectral energy distribution fitting indicates that the absorbing galaxies have stellar masses ranging from 107.2to 108.8M⊙and metallicity between 0.02 and 0.4 solar. Notably, thez= 6.2713 system in the J0305–3150 field resides in a galaxy overdensity region, which contains two (tentatively) merging galaxies within 350 kpc and seven galaxies within 1 Mpc. We measure the relative abundances ofαelements to iron ([α/Fe]) and find that the CGM gas in the most overdense region exhibits a lower [α/Fe] ratio. Our modeling of the galaxy’s chemical abundance favors a top-heavy stellar initial mass function and hints that we may be witnessing the contribution of the first generation of Population III stars to the CGM at the end of the reionization epoch.more » « less

Abstract We present rest-frame optical emission-line flux ratio measurements for five z > 5 galaxies observed by the James Webb Space Telescope Near-Infared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) in the SMACS 0723 Early Release Observations. We add several quality-control and post-processing steps to the NIRSpec pipeline reduction products in order to ensure reliable relative flux calibration of emission lines that are closely separated in wavelength, despite the uncertain absolute spectrophotometry of the current version of the reductions. Compared to z ∼ 3 galaxies in the literature, the z > 5 galaxies have similar [O iii ] λ 5008/H β ratios, similar [O iii ] λ 4364/H γ ratios, and higher (∼0.5 dex) [Ne III ] λ 3870/[O II ] λ 3728 ratios. We compare the observations to MAPPINGS V photoionization models and find that the measured [Ne III ] λ 3870/[O II ] λ 3728, [O iii ] λ 4364/H γ , and [O iii ] λ 5008/H β emission-line ratios are consistent with an interstellar medium (ISM) that has very high ionization ( log ( Q ) ≃ 8 − 9 , units of cm s −1 ), low metallicity ( Z / Z ⊙ ≲ 0.2), and very high pressure ( log ( P / k ) ≃ 8 − 9 , units of cm −3 ). The combination of [O iii ] λ 4364/H γ and [O iii ] λ (4960 + 5008)/H β line ratios indicate very high electron temperatures of 4.1 < log ( T e / K ) < 4.4 , further implying metallicities of Z / Z ⊙ ≲ 0.2 with the application of low-redshift calibrations for “ T e -based” metallicities. These observations represent a tantalizing new view of the physical conditions of the ISM in galaxies at cosmic dawn.more » « less

Abstract Lyman-alpha-emitting galaxies (LAEs) are typically young, low-mass, star-forming galaxies with little extinction from interstellar dust. Their low dust attenuation allows their Lyαemission to shine brightly in spectroscopic and photometric observations, providing an observational window into the high-redshift Universe. Narrowband surveys reveal large, uniform samples of LAEs at specific redshifts that probe large-scale structure and the temporal evolution of galaxy properties. The One-hundred-deg2DECam Imaging in Narrowbands (ODIN) utilizes three custom-made narrowband filters on the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to discover LAEs at three equally spaced periods in cosmological history. In this paper, we introduce the hybrid-weighted double-broadband continuum estimation technique, which yields improved estimation of Lyαequivalent widths. Using this method, we discover 6032, 5691, and 4066 LAE candidates atz= 2.4, 3.1, and 4.5 in the extended COSMOS field (∼9 deg2). We find that [Oii] emitters are a minimal contaminant in our LAE samples, but that interloping Green Pea–like [Oiii] emitters are important for our redshift 4.5 sample. We introduce an innovative method for identifying [Oii] and [Oiii] emitters via a combination of narrowband excess and galaxy colors, enabling their study as separate classes of objects. We present scaled median stacked spectral energy distributions for each galaxy sample, revealing the overall success of our selection methods. We also calculate rest-frame Lyαequivalent widths for our LAE samples and find that the EW distributions are best fit by exponential functions with scale lengths ofw0= 53 ± 1, 65 ± 1, and 59 ± 1 Å, respectively.more » « less
