Fluorinated polymers are important functional materials for a broad range of applications, but the recycling of current fluorinated polymers is challenging. We present the first example of semi-fluorinated polymers that can undergo chemical recycling to form the corresponding monomers under ambient conditions. Prepared through ring-opening metathesis polymerization of functionalized trans -cyclobutane fused cyclooctene ( t CBCO) monomers, these polymers show tunable glass transition temperatures (−2 °C to 88 °C), excellent thermal stability (decomposition onset temperatures >280 °C) and hydrophobicity (water contact angles >90°). The hydrophobicity of the semi-fluorinated polymers was further utilized in an amphiphilic diblock copolymer, which forms self-assembled micelles with a size of ∼88 nm in an aqueous solution. Finally, through an efficient, regioselective para -fluoro-thiol substitution reaction, post-polymerization functionalization of a polymer with a pentafluorophenyl imide substituent was achieved. The ease of preparation, functionalization, and recycling, along with the diverse thermomechanical properties and demonstrated hydrophobicity make the t CBCO-based depolymerizable semi-fluorinated polymers promising candidates for sustainable functional materials that can offer a solution to a circular economy.

Triphenylene containing blue-light emitting semi-fluorinated aryl ether polymers with excellent thermal and photostability
Integration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) units into semi-fluorinated polymers affords high thermal stability and excellent processability for potential applications in optoelectronic, gas-separation, and advanced composites. Base-promoted step-growth polycondensation of commercial bisphenols with new triphenylene containing bis-trifluorovinyl ether (TFVE) monomers affords semi-fluorinated arylene vinylene ether (FAVE) polymers in good yields. The solution-processable polymers form tough transparent films and produce substitution dependent blue-light emission in solution with emission quantum yields ranging from 7.2–12% (in dichloromethane). Although predominantly amorphous with high glass transition temperatures ( T g ) ranging from 176–243 °C, powder X-ray diffraction studies show typical molecular diameter and pi-stacking reflections for triphenylene polymers. The polymers exhibited excellent thermal stability, solution photostability, and remarkable thermal oxidative photostability after heating at 250 °C for 24 h in air. Further, a model post-polymerization Scholl coupling afforded a novel semi-fluorinated hexabenzocoronene polymer with new optical properties. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) computations were also performed using SMD (dichloromethane)- ω B97XD/BS1 (BS1 = 6-31G(d′) for C, H, O and F). This work demonstrated the synthesis and characterization of processable, blue-light emitting, thermally stable triphenylene enchained semi-fluorinated aryl ether polymers.

Abstract A practical and direct electrophilic polymerization of hexafluoroacetone hydrate with diphenyl ether toward the preparation of semi‐fluorinated polyaryl ethers (PAE) is reported. Electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) polymerization under interfacial conditions with phase transfer catalyst (Aliquat 336) proceeds in trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride by generation of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and the protonated hexafluoroacetone (HFA) in situ affording 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexafluoroisopropylidene (6F) PAE with high regioselectivity (4,4’‐DPE) and high molecular weight (≈60 kDa). Although first reported in a 1966 US Patent by DuPont using harsh conditions, improved synthetic methods or modern characterization has not been disclosed until now. Despite the presence of the 6F group, known to impart disordered morphology, this simple semi‐fluorinated PAE exhibits anomalous crystallinity with polymorphic melting points (Tm) ranging from 230–309 °C, high solubility in common organic solvents, a glass transition (Tg) of 163 °C, and thermo‐oxidative stability above 500 °C. Tough optically clear films prepared from solution give transmittance higher than 90% throughout the visible region. Synthesis, mechanistic aspects, and characterization including surface and dielectric properties are discussed.more » « less

All‐inorganic copper(I) halides have recently emerged as attractive alternatives to lead‐based halide perovskites and rare‐earth‐doped inorganics for light emission applications. Most of the newly discovered all‐inorganic Cu(I) halides demonstrate high‐efficiency blue emission albeit with unusually poor tunability of photoluminescence (PL) properties. This work reports the facile preparation of three new copper(I) halides based on the guanidinium cation: (CN3H6)3CuCl4, (CN3H6)7Cu3Br10·3(C3H7NO), and (CN3H6)7Cu3I10·3(C3H7NO). A comprehensive characterization of PL is presented for these novel materials, which have highly tunable, dual blue–yellow emission responsive to both excitation wavelength and vacuum annealing. These have remarkable photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) values of up to 34.6% and color‐rendering indices (CRI) up to 97% for tunable, single‐phase white light emission with correlated color temperatures (CCT) ranging from 4851 to 18 921 K, demonstrating the excellent potential of Cu(I) halides for light emission applications.more » « less

ree bis(4-oligoethyleneoxyphenyl) viologen bistosylate salts of different lengths were prepared via the Zincke reaction followed by a metathesis reaction with silver tosylate, and their chemical structures confirmed by 1H, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques, and elemental analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed these salts had excellent thermal stabilities, losing just 5 % of their initial mass between 283 and 288 °C. Liquid crystalline phases and transition temperatures were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and variable temperature X-ray diffraction (VTXRD) techniques. The salts exhibited weak fluorescent emission in dichloromethane and no emission in acetonitrile but exhibited light emission in the solid state. Their absolute quantum yields ranged between 3 and 12 %. Impedance spectroscopy showed that the ionic conductivity of the salts increases with the number of oxyethylene units in the extended viologen moiety. The salt-containing four oxyethylene units at each end reach a conductivity value of 10-2 S·cm−1, attributed to its larger molecular flexibility and improved ionic liquid mobility.more » « less

Abstract Two-dimensional carbides and nitrides, known as MXenes, are promising for water-processable coatings due to their excellent electrical, thermal, and optical properties. However, depositing hydrophilic MXene nanosheets onto inert or hydrophobic polymer surfaces requires plasma treatment or chemical modification. This study demonstrates a universal salt-assisted assembly method that produces ultra-thin, uniform MXene coatings with exceptional mechanical stability and washability on various polymers, including high-performance polymers for extreme temperatures. The salt in the Ti3C2Txcolloidal suspension reduces surface charges, enabling electrostatically hydrophobized MXene deposition on polymers. A library of salts was used to optimize assembly kinetics and coating morphology. A 170 nm MXene coating can reduce radiation temperature by ~200 °C on a 300 °C PEEK substrate, while the coating on Kevlar fabric provides comfort in extreme conditions, including outer space and polar regions.more » « less
