Title: Resolving spacetime singularities in flux compactifications & KKLT
A bstract In flux compactifications of type IIB string theory with D3 and seven-branes, the negative induced D3 charge localized on seven-branes leads to an apparently pathological profile of the metric sufficiently close to the source. With the volume modulus stabilized in a KKLT de Sitter vacuum this pathological region takes over a significant part of the entire compactification, threatening to spoil the KKLT effective field theory. In this paper we employ the Seiberg-Witten solution of pure SU( N ) super Yang-Mills theory to argue that wrapped seven-branes can be thought of as bound states of more microscopic exotic branes. We argue that the low-energy worldvolume dynamics of a stack of n such exotic branes is given by the ( A 1 , A n− 1 ) Argyres-Douglas theory. Moreover, the splitting of the perturbative (in α ′) seven-brane into its constituent branes at the non-perturbative level resolves the apparently pathological region close to the seven-brane and replaces it with a region of $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O (1) Einstein frame volume. While this region generically takes up an $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O (1) fraction of the compactification in a KKLT de Sitter vacuum we argue that a small flux superpotential dynamically ensures that the 4d effective field theory of KKLT remains valid nevertheless.  more » « less

  1. A bstract We study electric-magnetic duality in compactifications of M-theory on twisted connected sum (TCS) G 2 manifolds via duality with F-theory. Specifically, we study the physics of the D3-branes in F-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau fourfold Y , dual to a compactification of M-theory on a TCS G 2 manifold X . $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 supersymmetry is restored in an appropriate geometric limit. In that limit, we demonstrate that the dual of D3-branes probing seven-branes corresponds to the shrinking of certain surfaces and curves, yielding light particles that may carry both electric and magnetic charges. We provide evidence that the Minahan-Nemeschansky theories with E n flavor symmetry may be realized in this way. The SL(2 , ℤ) monodromy of the 3/7-brane system is dual to a Fourier-Mukai transform of the dual IIA/M-theory geometry in this limit, and we extrapolate this monodromy action to the global compactification. Away from the limit, the theory is broken to $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 supersymmetry by a D-term.

We study Randall-Sundrum two brane setups with mismatched brane tensions. For the vacuum solutions, boundary conditions demand that the induced metric on each of the branes is either de Sitter, Anti-de Sitter, or Minkowski. For incompatible boundary conditions, the bulk metric is necessarily time-dependent. This introduces a new class of time-dependent solutions with the potential to address cosmological issues and provide alternatives to conventional inflationary (or contracting) scenarios. We take a first step in this paper toward such solutions. One important finding is that the resulting solutions can be very succinctly described in terms of an effective action involving only the induced metric on either one of the branes and the radion field. But the full geometry cannot necessarily be simply described with a single coordinate patch. We concentrate here on the time- dependent solutions but argue that supplemented with a brane stabilization mechanism one can potentially construct interesting cosmological models this way. This is true both with and without a brane stabilization mechanism.

Abstract We present a non-supersymmetric deformation of probe branes describing conformal defects of codimension two in AdS/CFT. The worldvolume of the probe branes is deformed from AdS p × S 1 embedded in an AdS p +2 × ℳ D  −  p  − 2 background to an embedding of Janus form, which uses an AdS p− 1 slicing of AdS p and in which the brane bends along the slicing coordinate. In field theory terms this realizes conformal interfaces on codimension- two defects. We discuss these “Janus on the brane” solutions for AdS 3 × S 1 D3-branes in the AdS 5 × S 5 solution of Type IIB, realizing interfaces on surface defects in $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SYM, and show that similar solutions exist for probe branes in AdS p +2 × S 9 −p vacua of M-theory and in the AdS 6 × S 4 solution of massive Type IIA.

  4. Abstract

We study the phenomenology of a recent string construction with a quantum mechanically stable dark energy. A mild supersymmetry protects the vacuum energy but also allowsTeV scale superpartner masses. The construction is holographic in the sense that the 4D spacetime is generated from “spacetime pixels” originating from five‐branes wrapped over metastable five‐cycles of the compactification. The cosmological constant scales asin the pixel number. An instability in the construction leads to cosmic expansion. This also causes more five‐branes to wind up in the geometry, leading to a slowly decreasing cosmological constant which we interpret as an epoch of inflation followed by (pre‐)heating when a rare event occurs in which the number of pixels increases by an order one fraction. The sudden appearance of radiation triggers an exponential increase in the number of pixels. Dark energy has a time varying equation of state with, which is compatible with current bounds, and could be constrained further by future data releases. The pixelated nature of the Universe also implies a large‐lcutoff on the angular power spectrum of cosmological observables with. We also use this pixel description to study the thermodynamics of de Sitter space, finding rough agreement with effective field theory considerations.

  5. Abstract

We consider the conundrum of generating de Sitter space from higher‐dimensional geometry, with particular attention to KKLT‐type constructions[3] and their 5d implications. We show that even in the probe approximation with small, a consistent higher‐dimensional solution requires a deformation of a modulus field playing the role of a Goldberger‐Wise stabilizing field in Randall‐Sundrum type geometries that occurs through a shift in a the throat length. We identify the light radion field that sets the length of the throat, whose origin is the dynamical conifold deformation parameter. By analyzing the theory as a 5d model of mismatched branes in AdS5 space with a GW stabilization mechanism, we show how energy (and supersymmetry breaking) is transferred to both the IR and UV regions of the throat to generate a consistent 4d de Sitter sliced geometry. This should help resolve some of the recent apparent paradoxes in explicit higher‐dimensional constructions. Moreover, the radion gives insight into the potential for the previously identified “conifold instability”. We argue that this instability would be a destabilization of the potential for the radion in KKLT, which can occur when the perturbation is too large. If indeedis too small, the radion would enter on its runaway direction and the conifold deformation would shrink to zero size. It is difficult to satisfy the required bound and a) maintain a hierarchy in the simpler CY manifolds and b) complete the cosmological phase transition into the stabilized throat, We also discuss the implications of this type of setup for supersymmetry breaking, and how multiple throats can introduce hierarchies of supersymmetry breaking masses, even in an anomaly‐mediated scenario. In an appendix we consider general compactification constraints.
