Title: Bridged and fused triazolic energetic frameworks with an azo building block towards thermally stable and applicable propellant ingredients
The assembly of nitrogen-rich building blocks determines the energy storage capacity and affects the stability of energetic materials. Owing to the environmentally harmful properties of the propellant, ammonium perchlorate (AP), much research has explored halogen-free replacements which often suffer from poor thermal stability. In our goal of balancing performance and stability, we report access to an energetic molecule (3) by smart assembly of an azo bridge into trinitromethyl triazoles. Compound 3 exhibits a decomposition temperature of 175 °C, which approaches the highest among reported trinitromethyl derivatives. The density (1.91 g cm −3 ) and oxygen balance (+29%) for 3 exceed other candidates, suggesting it as a high energy dense oxidizer (HEDO) replacement for AP in rocket propellants. One-step azo-involved cyclization of 3 give two fused nitro triazolones, (FNTO) 4 and its N -oxide 5, having thermal stabilities and energies superior to the analogous derivatives of 5-nitro-2,4-dihydro-3 H -1,2,4-triazole-3-one (NTO). The comparison of properties of the fused triazolones 4 and 8 and their N -oxide derivatives 5 and 9 shows that formation of an N -oxide is an effective strategy which results in an increase of the decomposition temperature, oxygen balance, specific impulse, and detonation properties and in a decrease of the sensitivity of the corresponding energetic material. This work highlights bridged and fused triazolic energetic frameworks with an azo building block providing an alternative structural motif for seeking an applicable high-energy ingredient.  more » « less

Abstract Owing to its simple preparation and high oxygen content, nitroformate [ − C(NO 2 ) 3 , NF] is an extremely attractive oxidant component for propellants and explosives. However, the poor thermostability of NF-based derivatives has been an unconquerable barrier for more than 150 years, thus hindering its application. In this study, the first example of a nitrogen-rich hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF-NF) is designed and constructed through self-assembly in energetic materials, in which NF anions are trapped in pores of the resulting framework via the dual force of ionic and hydrogen bonds from the strengthened framework. These factors lead to the decomposition temperature of the resulting HOF-NF moiety being 200 °C, which exceeds the challenge of thermal stability over 180 °C for the first time among NF-based compounds. A large number of NF-based compounds with high stabilities and excellent properties can be designed and synthesized on the basis of this work.

  2. Energetic properties of bistetrazole derivatives are improved by the step-by-step introduction of functionalities which improve heat of formation, density, and oxygen content. The incorporation of unsaturation between bis(1 H -tetrazol-5-yl) and bis(1 H -tetrazol-1-ol) derivatives leads to planarity which enhances the density of the final product. In this manuscript, we have synthesized compounds 1,2-di(1 H -tetrazol-5-yl)ethane (4), ( E )-1,2-di(1 H -tetrazol-5-yl)ethene (5), and ( E )-5,5′-(ethene-1,2-diyl)bis(1 H -tetrazol-1-ol), (6) using readily available starting materials. Their corresponding dihydroxylammonium salts 7, 8 and 9 are obtained by reacting two equivalents of hydroxylamine (50% in water). New compounds are analyzed using IR, EA, DSC and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy ( 1 H, 13 C and 15 N). The solid-state structures of compounds 6, 7, 8 and 9 are confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The energetic performances are calculated using the EXPLO5 (v6.06.02) code and the sensitivities towards external stimuli such as friction and impact are determined according to BAM standard. Compound 6 {( E )-5,5′-(ethene-1,2-diyl)bis(1 H -tetrazol-1-ol)} exhibits a surprisingly high density of 1.91 g cm −3 at 100 K (1.86 g cm −3 at 298 K). Its detonation velocity (9017 m s −1 ) is considerably superior to those of RDX (8795 m s −1 ), which suggests it is a competitive high-energy-density material.

  3. Abstract

Starting from the planar molecule 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene, Duet al.reported synthesizing one of a couple of possible 2D materials: graphenylene or 3-carbophene.[1] 3-carbophene is a member of a novel class of two-dimensional covalent organic framework, [N]-carbophenes (carbophenes). Using a high throughput method, we computed the formation energies and conduction properties of 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-carbophenes with hydroxyl (OH), carbonyl (CO), nitro (NO2), amine (NH2), carboxyl (COOH) functional groups replacing hydrogen terminating agents. Five hundred and nine structures with randomly picked motifs, with functionalizations from a single functional group per cell to fully functionalized were studied. Our results demonstrate a negatively sloped linear relationship between the degree of functionalization and formation energy when the type of functional group and type of carbophene are held constant. The decrease in formation energy with functionalization makes Du’s synthesis of functionalized 3-carbophene more creditable. The type of carbophene, type of functional group, and the degree of functionalization all play a role in the band structure of the materials. For example, CO functional groups may lead to a mid- gap state pinned to the Fermi level, whereas the other functional groups studied keep the semiconducting nature of pristine carbophene. Thus, because carbonyl functional groups are often present in defected carbon systems, care should be taken to limit the amount of oxygen in carbophene devices where the band gap is important. Thus, this work strengthens the hypothesis of Junkermeier et al.’s hypothesis thatDu et al.synthesized 3-carbophene and not graphenylene.[2]

  4. Thermoelectric (TE) cement composite is a new type of TE material. Unlike ordinary cement, due to the inclusion of additives, TE cement can mutually transform thermal energy into electrical energy. In extreme weather, the large temperature difference between indoor and outdoor can be harvested by TE cement to generate electricity. In moderate weather, given power input, the same material can provide cooling/heating to adjust room temperature and reduce HAVC load. Therefore, TE cement has energy-saving potential in the application of building enclosures and energy systems. Its ability to convert different forms of energy and use low-grade energy is conducive to the operation of net-zero buildings. In this study, the graphene nanoplatelets and aluminum-doped zinc oxide nanopowder enhanced cement composite, was fabricated. The performance indicator of TE materials includes the dimensionless figure of merit ZT, calculated by Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity. These TE properties were measured and calculated by a Physical Property Measurement System at different temperatures. The highest ZT of 15wt.% graphene and 5wt.% AZO enhanced cement composite prepared by the dry method is about 5.93E-5 at 330K.

  5. Abstract

The mineral apatite, Ca10(PO4)6(F,OH,Cl)2, incorporates sulfur (S) during crystallization from S-bearing hydrothermal fluids and silicate melts. Our previous studies of natural and experimental apatite demonstrate that the oxidation state of S in apatite varies systematically as a function of oxygen fugacity (fO2). The S oxidation states –1 and –2 were quantitatively identified in apatite crystallized from reduced, S-bearing hydrothermal fluids and silicate melts by using sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (S-XANES) where S 6+/ΣS in apatite increases from ~0 at FMQ-1 to ~1 at FMQ+2, where FMQ refers to the fayalite-magnetite-quartz fO2 buffer. In this study, we employ quantum-mechanical calculations to investigate the atomistic structure and energetics of S(-I) and S(-II) incorporated into apatite and elucidate incorporation mechanisms.

One S(-I) species (disulfide, S22−) and two S(-II) species (bisulfide, HS−, and sulfide, S2−) are investigated as possible forms of reduced S species in apatite. In configuration models for the simulation, these reduced S species are positioned along the c-axis channel, originally occupied by the column anions F, Cl, and OH in the end-member apatites. In the lowest-energy configurations of S-incorporated apatite, disulfide prefers to be positioned halfway between the mirror planes at z = 1/4 and 3/4. In contrast, the energy-optimized bisulfide is located slightly away from the mirror planes by ~0.04 fractional units in the c direction. The energetic stability of these reduced S species as a function of position along the c-axis can be explained by the geometric and electrostatic constraints of the Ca and O planes that constitute the c-axis channel.

The thermodynamics of incorporation of disulfide and bisulfide into apatite is evaluated by using solid-state reaction equations where the apatite host and a solid S-bearing source phase (pyrite and Na2S2(s) for disulfide; troilite and Na2S(s) for sulfide) are the reactants, and the S-incorporated apatite and an anion sink phase are the products. The Gibbs free energy (ΔG) is lower for incorporation with Na-bearing phases than with Fe-bearing phases, which is attributed to the higher energetic stability of the iron sulfide minerals as a source phase for S than the sodium sulfide phases. The thermodynamics of incorporation of reduced S is also evaluated by using reaction equations involving dissolved disulfide and sulfide species [HnS(aq)(2−n) and HnS(aq)(2−n); n = 0, 1, and 2] as a source phase. The ΔG of S-incorporation increases for fluorapatite and chlorapatite, and decreases for hydroxylapatite, as these species are protonated (i.e., as n changes from 0 to 2). These thermodynamic results demonstrate that the presence of reduced S in apatite is primarily controlled by the chemistry of magmatic and hydrothermal systems where apatite forms (e.g., an abundance of Fe; solution pH). Ultimately, our methodology developed for evaluating the thermodynamics of S incorporation in apatite as a function of temperature, pH, and composition is highly applicable to predicting the trace and volatile element incorporation in minerals in a variety of geological systems. In addition to solid-solid and solid-liquid equilibria treated here at different temperatures and pH, the methodology can be easily extended to different pressure conditions by just performing the quantum-mechanical calculations at elevated pressures.
