Title: Anywear Academy: A Larp-based Camp to Inspire Computational Interest in Middle School Girls
This paper presents a case study of designing and running a Larp (live action role play)-based summer camp in which middle school-age girls create social wearables, toward building computational and design skills, interest, and self-efficacy. Our design draws upon prior evidence that edu-larps can address the identity gap for underrepresented groups in STEM. The focus on creation of social wearables built using E-textiles builds on existing larp practices that use costuming as a method for establishing identity as well as for providing a platform campers can use to enhance their dramatic spectacles. Our findings will be of interest to those working in the areas of informal learning of computation through Arduino and another small device programming, as well as those interested in the intersection of larp and technology design practices, and edu-larp.  more » « less

  1. In this paper, we explore a domain hijacking vulnerability that is an accidental byproduct of undocumented operational practices between domain registrars and registries. We show how over the last nine years over 512K domains have been implicitly exposed to the risk of hijacking, affecting names in most popular TLDs (including .com and .net) as well as legacy TLDs with tight registration control (such as .edu and .gov). Moreover, we show that this weakness has been actively exploited by multiple parties who, over the years, have assumed control over 163K domains without having any ownership interest in those names. In addition to characterizing the nature and size of this problem, we also report on the efficacy of the remediation in response to our outreach with registrars.

  2. Broadening participation in engineering needs to be different from filling the pipeline or national competitiveness. We should seek to empower students to use engineering knowledge and skills to create social change, address injustices, or develop problem-solving skills that can help transform lives. This study examined how migratory high school students developed beliefs about engineering’s capacity for social impact through participation in an activity where they learned how the engineering design process could be used to solve a need impacting agricultural workers. Specifically, we investigated how students' interest in engineering, their self-efficacy in applying engineering concepts, and the development of an identity as a future engineer influence the formation of their beliefs about their capacity to act purposefully and effectively using engineering practices. Migratory high school students represent an overlooked and underserved segment of students in U.S. schools. These students, often from Latinx backgrounds, remain underrepresented in engineering fields. To investigate the development of “engineering for social impact” among migratory high school students, we designed and implemented a culturally responsive and gamified engineering design activity. The activity aimed to connect engineering concepts to students’ cultural backgrounds and experiences while leveraging game-based learning elements to increase engagement. We administered pre- and post-surveys to measure changes in students’ engineering impact, interest, self-efficacy, and identity (n = 235). We used a multiple linear regression model to examine the relationships. Our results show that migratory students’ engineering interest and self-efficacy significantly supported the development of their belief that engineering could be a tool for social impact. Specifically, as students’ engineering interest increased, their perception that engineering could be used as a practice to address injustices significantly increased by 0.335 points. Similarly, as students’ engineering self-efficacy beliefs increased, that led to a significant increase of 0.346 points in their social impact beliefs. However, being recognized as someone who can do engineering (i.e., recognition beliefs) did not have a significant effect. The model explains approximately 46.7% of the variance in students’ beliefs about engineering as a tool for social impact. Our findings suggest that students’ engineering for social impact beliefs develop through experiences that enable them to see themselves as engineers and use engineering knowledge in meaningful ways. Our culturally responsive and gamified approach positively influenced students’ beliefs by fostering both interest and self-efficacy in engineering contexts. The results underscore the importance of creating learning environments and activities that not only spark interest in engineering but also build students’ confidence in their abilities to engage in engineering practices. For migratory Latinx high school students who face unique challenges in their educational journeys, cultivating engineering for social impact may be particularly crucial in garnering interest in the field. This study contributes to the growing body of research on the importance of connecting engineering to social and cultural context and provides insights into effective strategies for supporting underrepresented students in engineering. Future work should explore the longitudinal effects of such interventions and investigate additional factors that may influence the development of students’ social impact beliefs among migratory students.

The Internet of Things (IoT) [3, 16, 35] is a physical-digital ecosystem of compliant technologies and heterogeneous parts, enabling vast transmissions of data and candid, pervasive presence of things [40]. Fashion, on the other hand, is an embodied practice, an information medium of material, social, cultural, economic and political forces. Many wearables are outfitted to actuate data input sources as a visualised display. However, the impact and rich possibilities of fashion adornment practices for embodied data engagement in IoT wearables design have been overlooked. Introducing computational materials of the IoT to physical properties pushes this virtual system into the physical realm. In this research, an aesthetic criterion of haute couture practices considers the material turn [34, 39]. Design cases of fashion-led adornment style are a promising path to follow in the context of designing wearables for an Internet of Worn Things.

  4. The contemporary understanding of gender continues to highlight the complexity and variety of gender identities beyond a binary dichotomy regarding one’s biological sex assigned at birth. The emergence and popularity of various online social spaces also makes the digital presentation of gender even more sophisticated. In this paper, we use non-cisgender as an umbrella term to describe diverse gender identities that do not match people’s sex assigned at birth, including Transgender, Genderfuid, and Non-binary.We especially explore non-cisgender individuals’ identity practices and their challenges in novel social Virtual Reality (VR) spaces where they can present, express, and experiment their identity in ways that traditional online social spaces cannot provide. We provide one of the first empirical evidence of how social VR platforms may introduce new and novel phenomena and practices of approaching diverse gender identities online. We also contribute to re-conceptualizing technology-supported identity practices by highlighting the role of (re)discovering the physical body online and informing the design of the emerging metaverse for supporting diverse gender identities in the future.

  5. The digital presentation of gender and sexuality has been a long-standing concern in HCI and CSCW. There is also a growing interest in exploring more nuanced presentations of identity afforded in emerging online social spaces that have not been thoroughly studied. In this paper, we endeavor to contribute towards this research agenda in yet another new media context – live streaming – by analyzing female and LGBTQ streamers’ practices to present and manage their gender identity and sexual identity. Our findings highlight streamers’ gender representation and sexual representation as a demonstration of controlling their own bodies, an awareness of the audiences and the resistance to their expectations, and an exhibition of the affordances and power structure of the specific online social space. We extend existing studies on live streaming by exploring the understudied gender identity and sexual identity aspect of the streaming practices. We also highlight the less audience/performance-oriented but more self-driven aspect of digital representations and the importance of affirmation and empowerment in this process.We add nuance to the existing HCI/CSCWstudies on gender and sexuality by investigating a highly dynamic, interactive, and multilayered self-presentation mechanism emerging in live streaming and point to the need for potential new lenses to analyze technology-supported identity construction.
