Title: Active learning in emergency remote introductory linguistics: Successes and challenge
This paper describes a set of flipped learning materials that I created for emergency remote teaching of introductory linguistics. My goals were to create a set of asynchronous materials that would scaffold student progress through a syntax unit, require active engagement in the material, and enable students to receive incremental formative feedback. Assessment of formative and summative student progress in the unit demonstrates that these materials were as effective at supporting student learning as face-to-face pedagogical methods. The discussion touches on additional issues related to pedagogy of care that were overlooked.  more » « less

    Efforts to improve instruction frequently focus on fostering meaningful learning—learning based on conceptual understanding—as opposed to knowledge memorized by rote. Consistent with Dewey’s (1963) principle of interaction, fostering meaningful learning entails identifying what children already know and do not know and building on the former to learn (moderately) new knowledge (Claessens & Engel, 2013; Fyfe et al., 2012; Piaget, 1964; Vygotsky, 1978). A learning trajectory (LT) approach to instruction—which includes conceptually and research-based and goals, a research-based learning progression of successive developmental levels, and research-based teaching activities to promote each level—epitomizes such an effort (Clements & Sarama, 2008; Confrey et al., 2012). Formative, classroom-based assessment—ongoing assessment to guide and monitor student learning (Black et al., 2003; Cizek, 2010; Author, 2018a)—is an integral aspect of the LT approach (Daro et al., 2011). In contrast to more commonly used summative assessment strategy (e.g., a unit test given at the end of an instruction unit to assess whether unit content has been mastered and grade progress), formative assessment serves to identify what developmental level a child has already achieved and the next developmentally appropriate level on which instruction should begin (Author, 2018a). Moreover, children are regularly assessed during instruction to gauge whether they–individually or collectively–have mastered a developmental level before instruction proceeds with the next higher level. In sum, “the LT approach involves using formative assessment (National Mathematics Advisory Panel, 2008; Shepard et al., 2018) to provide instructional activities aligned with empirically validated developmental progressions (Fantuzzo, Gadsden, & McDermott, 2011). Although research has shown that LT-based instruction is more efficacious, research is needed to evaluate the add-on value of the formative assessment components of LT-based instruction on student outcomes and the professional development of teachers. This presentation will highlight future lines of research that would provide insight into underlying theory and more productive strategies. Because LTs “need to be supplemented with consideration of obstacles that the student must overcome,” much needs to be learned about the obstacles posed by the content itself, instructional materials, and teachers (Ginsburg, 2009).

  2. ‘Algorithms’ is a core CS concept included in the K-12 CS standards, yet student challenges with understanding different aspects of algorithms are still not well documented, especially for younger students. This paper describes an approach to decompose the broad middle-school ‘algorithms’ standard into finer grained learning targets, develop formative assessment tasks aligned with the learning targets, and use the tasks to explore student understanding of, and challenges with, the various aspects of the standard. We present a number of student challenges revealed by our analysis of student responses to a set of standards-aligned formative assessment tasks and discuss how teachers and researchers interpreted student responses differently, even when using the same rubrics. Our study underscores the importance of carefully designed standards-aligned formative assessment tasks for monitoring student progress and demonstrates the need for teacher content knowledge to effectively use formative assessments during CS instruction.

    Unlike summative assessment that is aimed at grading students at the end of a unit or academic term, formative assessment is assess- ment for learning, aimed at monitoring ongoing student learning to provide feedback to both student and teacher, so that learning gaps can be addressed during the learning process. Education research points to formative assessment as a crucial vehicle for improving student learning. Formative assessment in K-12 CS and program- ming classrooms remains a crucial unaddressed need. Given that assessment for learning is closely tied to teacher pedagogical con- tent knowledge, formative assessment literacy needs to also be a topic of CS teacher PD. This position paper addresses the broad need to understand formative assessment and build a framework to understand the what, why, and how of formative assessment of introductory programming in K-12 CS. It shares specific pro- gramming examples to articulate the cycle of formative assessment, diagnostic evaluation, feedback, and action. The design of formative assessment items is informed by CS research on assessment design, albeit related largely to summative assessment and in CS1 contexts, and learning of programming, especially student misconceptions. It describes what teacher formative assessment literacy PD should entail and how to catalyze assessment-focused collaboration among K-12 CS teachers through assessment platforms and repositories.

  4. Most chemical engineering core classes are best taught when students are exposed to a face-to-face learning/teaching environment. With the arrival of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the whole education system and the setting were disrupted at Hampton University (HU). Traditional in-person face-to-face classes were forced to move to remote instructions to maintain a healthy and safe campus environment and minimize the spread of COVID-19 on campus and in the community. As an instructor teaching core courses and unit operations laboratory in the Department of Chemical Engineering, it was challenging to move completely virtual and deliver instructions remotely without affecting students' learning outcomes. However, with the appropriate modern technologies and adapting to the students' change and needs, online teaching can be done efficiently and can still have efficient learning outcomes. Various activities were introduced to make the online/virtual class environment engaging in developing technical and professional skills and inducing learning for students. Using the latest educational tools and online resources, formative assessments were conducted throughout the course in an effort to improve student learning and instructor teaching. In addition to that, innovative ways of technology were also used to evaluate student learning and understanding of the material for grading and reporting purposes. Many of the modern educational tools, including Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, Ka-hoot, linoit, surveys, polls, and chemical engineering processes’ simulations and videos were in-troduced to make the synchronous sessions interactive. Likert-like surveys conducted were anal-yses to gauge the effectiveness of incorporation of technology during remote learning. This paper describes the innovative use of technologies to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Chemical Engineering Classes. It will also explain the strategies to assess the mode of delivery efficacy and how to change the course of teaching to adapt to the students' changing needs.

    This case study investigated preservice secondary mathematics teachers’ (PSMTs’) developing understanding of formative assessment as a way to leverage mathematical practices for student learning. Qualitative data came from PSMTs’ responses to a learning sequence designed to help them develop nuanced and disciplinary-specific understandings of formative assessment. Analyses suggest a trajectory for PSMTs learning to use formative assessment in problem-solving environments, but also shows how the orientation of one PSMT continued to obstruct her progress. The results suggest that mathematics teacher educators must themselves use formative assessment that supports PMSTs’ developing orientations to currently suggested ways of teaching.
