Recent advances in Neural Radiance Field (NeRF)-based methods have enabled high-fidelity novel view synthesis for video with dynamic elements. However, these methods often require expensive hardware, take days to process a second-long video and do not scale well to longer videos. We create an end-to-end pipeline for creating dynamic 3D video from a monocular video that can be run on consumer hardware in minutes per second of footage, not days. Our pipeline handles the estimation of the camera parameters, depth maps, 3D reconstruction of dynamic foreground and static background elements, and the rendering of the 3D video on a computer or VR headset. We use a state-of-the-art visual transformer model to estimate depth maps which we use to scale COLMAP poses and enable RGB-D fusion with estimated depth data. In our preliminary experiments, we rendered the output in a VR headset and visually compared the method against ground-truth datasets and state-of-the-art NeRF-based methods.

RT-NeRF: Real-Time On-Device Neural Radiance Fields Towards Immersive AR/VR Rendering
Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) based rendering has attracted growing attention thanks to its state-of-the-art (SOTA) rendering quality and wide applications in Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR). However, immersive real-time (> 30 FPS) NeRF based rendering enabled interactions are still limited due to the low achievable throughput on AR/VR devices. To this end, we first profile SOTA efficient NeRF al- gorithms on commercial devices and identify two primary causes of the aforementioned inefficiency: (1) the uniform point sampling and (2) the dense accesses and computations of the required embeddings in NeRF. Furthermore, we propose RT-NeRF, which to the best of our knowledge is the first algorithm-hardware co-design acceleration of NeRF. Specifically, on the algorithm level, RT-NeRF integrates an efficient rendering pipeline for largely alleviating the inefficiency due to the commonly adopted uniform point sampling method in NeRF by directly computing the geometry of pre-existing points. Additionally, RT-NeRF leverages a coarse-grained view-dependent computing ordering scheme for eliminating the (unnecessary) pro- cessing of invisible points. On the hardware level, our proposed RT-NeRF accelerator (1) adopts a hybrid encoding scheme to adap- tively switch between a bitmap- or coordinate-based sparsity encoding format for NeRF’s sparse embeddings, aiming to maximize the storage savings and thus reduce the required DRAM accesses while supporting efficient NeRF decoding; and (2) integrates both a high-density sparse search unit and a dual-purpose bi-direction adder & search tree to coordinate the two aforementioned encod- ing formats. Extensive experiments on eight datasets consistently validate the effectiveness of RT-NeRF, achieving a large throughput improvement (e.g., 9.7×∼3,201×) while maintaining the rendering quality as compared with SOTA efficient NeRF solutions.

Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) has emerged as a leading technique for novel view synthesis, owing to its impressive photorealistic reconstruction and rendering capability. Nevertheless, achieving real-time NeRF rendering in large-scale scenes has presented challenges, often leading to the adoption of either intricate baked mesh representations with a substantial number of triangles or resource-intensive ray marching in baked representations. We challenge these conventions, observing that high-quality geometry, represented by meshes with substantial triangles, is not necessary for achieving photorealistic rendering quality. Consequently, we propose MixRT, a novel NeRF representation that includes a low-quality mesh, a view-dependent displacement map, and a compressed NeRF model. This design effectively harnesses the capabilities of existing graphics hardware, thus enabling real-time NeRF rendering on edge devices. Leveraging a highly-optimized WebGL-based rendering framework, our proposed MixRT attains real-time rendering speeds on edge devices (over 30 FPS at a resolution of 1280 x 720 on a MacBook M1 Pro laptop), better rendering quality (0.2 PSNR higher in indoor scenes of the Unbounded-360 datasets), and a smaller storage size (less than 80% compared to state-of-the-art methods).more » « less

Many Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods leverage gradient information of the potential function of target distribution to explore sample space efficiently. However, computing gradients can often be computationally expensive for large scale applications, such as those in contemporary machine learning. Stochastic Gradient (SG-)MCMC methods approximate gradients by stochastic ones, commonly via uniformly subsampled data points, and achieve improved computational efficiency, however at the price of introducing sampling error. We propose a non-uniform subsampling scheme to improve the sampling accuracy. The proposed exponentially weighted stochastic gradient (EWSG) is designed so that a non-uniform-SG-MCMC method mimics the statistical behavior of a batch-gradient-MCMC method, and hence the inaccuracy due to SG approximation is reduced. EWSG differs from classical variance reduction (VR) techniques as it focuses on the entire distribution instead of just the variance; nevertheless, its reduced local variance is also proved. EWSG can also be viewed as an extension of the importance sampling idea, successful for stochastic-gradient-based optimizations, to sampling tasks. In our practical implementation of EWSG, the non-uniform subsampling is performed efficiently via a Metropolis-Hastings chain on the data index, which is coupled to the MCMC algorithm. Numerical experiments are provided, not only to demonstrate EWSG's effectiveness, but also to guide hyperparameter choices, and validate our non-asymptotic global error bound despite of approximations in the implementation. Notably, while statistical accuracy is improved, convergence speed can be comparable to the uniform version, which renders EWSG a practical alternative to VR (but EWSG and VR can be combined too).more » « less

Genomics is the critical key to enabling precision medicine, ensuring global food security and enforcing wildlife conservation. The massive genomic data produced by various genome sequencing technologies presents a significant challenge for genome analysis. Because of errors from sequencing machines and genetic variations, approximate pattern matching (APM) is a must for practical genome analysis. Recent work proposes FPGA, ASIC and even process-in-memory-based accelerators to boost the APM throughput by accelerating dynamic-programming-based algorithms (e.g., Smith-Waterman). However, existing accelerators lack the efficient hardware acceleration for the exact pattern matching (EPM) that is an even more critical and essential function widely used in almost every step of genome analysis including assembly, alignment, annotation and compression. State-of-the-art genome analysis adopts the FM-Index that augments the space-efficient BWT with additional data structures permitting fast EPM operations. But the FM-Index is notorious for poor spatial locality and massive random memory accesses. In this paper, we propose a ReRAM-based process-in-memory architecture, FindeR, to enhance the FM-Index EPM search throughput in genomic sequences. We build a reliable and energy-efficient Hamming distance unit to accelerate the computing kernel of FM-Index search using commodity ReRAM chips without introducing extra CMOS logic. We further architect a full-fledged FM-Index search pipeline and improve its search throughput by lightweight scheduling on the NVDIMM. We also create a system library for programmers to invoke FindeR to perform EPMs in genome analysis. Compared to state-of-the-art accelerators, FindeR improves the FM-Index search throughput by 83% ~ 30K× and throughput per Watt by 3.5×~42.5K×.more » « less

Indexing is a core technique for accelerating predicate evaluation in databases. After many years of effort, the indexing performance has reached its peak on the existing hardware infrastructure. We propose to use ray tracing (RT) cores to move the indexing performance and efficiency to another level by addressing the following technical challenges: (1) the lack of an efficient mapping of predicate evaluation to a ray tracing job and (2) the poor performance by the heavy and imbalanced ray load when processing skewed datasets. These challenges set obstacles to effectively exploiting RT cores for predicate evaluation. In this paper, we propose RTScan, an approach that leverages RT cores to accelerate index scans. RTScan transforms the evaluation of conjunctive predicates into an efficient ray tracing job in a three-dimensional space. A set of techniques are designed in RTScan, i.e., Uniform Encoding, Data Sieving, and Matrix RT Refine, which significantly enhances the parallelism of scans on RT cores while lightening and balancing the ray load. With the proposed techniques, RTScan achieves high performance for datasets with either uniform or skewed distributions and queries with different selectivities. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that RTScan enhances the scan performance on RT cores by five orders of magnitude and outperforms the state-of-the-art approach on CPU by up to 4.6×.more » « less
