Abstract Let $$K$$ be a real closed field with a nontrivial non-archimedean absolute value. We study a refined version of the tropicalization map, which we call real tropicalization map, that takes into account the signs on $$K$$. We study images of semialgebraic subsets of $K^n$ under this map from a general point of view. For a semialgebraic set $$S \subseteq K^n$$ we define a space $$S_r^{{\operatorname{an}}}$$ called the real analytification, which we show to be homeomorphic to the inverse limit of all real tropicalizations of $$S$$. We prove a real analogue of the tropical fundamental theorem and show that the tropicalization of any semialgebraic set is described by tropicalization of finitely many inequalities, which are valid on the semialgebraic set. We also study the topological properties of real analytification and tropicalization. If $$X$$ is an algebraic variety, we show that $$X_r^{{\operatorname{an}}}$$ can be canonically embedded into the real spectrum $$X_r$$ of $$X$$, and we study its relation with the Berkovich analytification of $$X$$.

Reductions of abelian surfaces over global function fields
Let $$A$$ be a non-isotrivial ordinary abelian surface over a global function field of characteristic $p>0$ with good reduction everywhere. Suppose that $$A$$ does not have real multiplication by any real quadratic field with discriminant a multiple of $$p$$ . We prove that there are infinitely many places modulo which $$A$$ is isogenous to the product of two elliptic curves.

Abstract Non-topological solitons are localized classical field configurations stabilized by a Noether charge. Friedberg, Lee, and Sirlin proposed a simple renormalizable soliton model in their seminal 1976 paper, consisting of a complex scalar field that carries the Noether charge and a real-scalar mediator. We revisit this model, point out commonalities and differences withQ-ball solitons, and provide analytic approximations to the underlying differential equations.more » « less

We define an enrichment of the logarithmic derivative of the zeta function of a variety over a finite field to a power series with coefficients in the Grothendieck–Witt group. We show that this enrichment is related to the topology of the real points of a lift. For cellular schemes over a field, we prove a rationality result for this enriched logarithmic derivative of the zeta function as an analogue of part of the Weil conjectures. We also compute several examples, including toric varieties, and show that the enrichment is a motivic measure.more » « less

Field trips are widely recognized as an essential educational component to connect classrooms with the real world. When students don’t have access to real field trips, virtual ones have been developed by educators and researchers. Pedagogical agents have been applied to serve as a tour guide and educational tool that facilitate students learning in a virtual learning environment. Such agents are computer software generated and controlled entities that replicate or emulate humans. Previous studies have found that adding anthropomorphic traits to pedagogical agents in learning environments has significantly improved students’ learning experience; however, this area has yet been explored in the context of a virtual construction field trip. In this study, a virtual field trip to a complex mechanical room was developed using 360-degree panoramas and a pedagogical agent was employed to lead the tour. This study focuses on one single anthropomorphic trait - deictic gestures, which are pointing gestures used to refer to specific objects – and explores how such trait affects students’ quantitative learning outcomes and feedbacks on four aspects of the agent, including facilitating learning, credibility, human-like, and engaging. It was found that deictic gestures can improve students’ learning performance and attitudes on multiple aspects of the agent.more » « less

In this paper, we describe a new approach to the continuous operation of a transverse spin-exchange optically pumped NMR gyroscope that utilizes modulation of both the applied bias field and the optical pumping. We demonstrate the simultaneous, continuous excitation of 131Xe and 129Xe using this hybrid modulation approach and the real-time demodulation of the Xe precession using a custom least-squares fitting algorithm. We present rotation rate measurements with this device, with a common field suppression factor of ∼1400, an angle random walk of 21 μHz/Hz, and a bias instability of ∼480 nHz after ∼1000 s.more » « less
