Abstract Ferro-rotational magnet RbFe(SO4)2has attracted attention for its stable ferro-rotational phase and electric-field-controlled magnetic chirality. This work presents the multiferroic properties andH–Tphase diagram of RbFe(SO4)2, which have been underexplored. Our measurements of magnetic susceptibility, ferroelectric polarization, and dielectric constant under various magnetic fields reveal four distinct phases: (I) a ferroelectric and helical magnetic phase below 4 K and 6 T, (II) a paraelectric and collinear magnetic phase below 4 K and above 6 T, (III) a paraelectric and non-collinear magnetic phase below 4 K and above 9 T, and (IV) a paraelectric and paramagnetic above 4 K. This study clarifies the multiferroic behavior andH–Tphase diagram of RbFe(SO4)2, providing valuable insights into ferro-rotational magnets.

Stereomodulation of Poly(4‐methyl‐1‐pentene): Adoption of a Neglected and Misunderstood Commercial Polyolefin
Abstract A toolbox of living coordination polymerization methods based on CPAM group 4 metal initiators has been applied for the stereomodulation of poly(4‐methyl‐1‐pentene) (PMP) tacticity to provide new fundamental forms in which thermal phase transitions,TgandTm, can be adjusted over a wide range. Also reported for the first time are the synthesis and properties of authenticated 1,2‐regioregular atactic PMP, which serves to correct past errors regarding this fundamental polyolefin.

OBJECTIVES:To identify triggering receptor expressed in myeloid cells-like transcript-1 positive (TLT-1+) microparticles (MPs) and evaluate if their presence is associated with clinical outcomes and/or disease severity in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). DESIGN:Retrospective cohort study. SETTING:ARDS Network clinical trials. PATIENTS:A total of 564 patients were diagnosed with ARDS. INTERVENTIONS:None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS:Using flow cytometry, we demonstrated the presence of TLT-1+platelet-derived microparticles (PMP) that bind fibrinogen in plasma samples from fresh donors. We retrospectively quantified TLT-1, glycoprotein (Gp) 1b, or αIIbβIIIaimmunopositive microparticles in plasma samples from patients with ARDS enrolled in the ARMA, KARMA, and LARMA (Studies 01 and 03 lower versus higher tidal volume, ketoconazole treatment, and lisofylline treatment Clincial Trials) ARDS Network clinical trials and evaluated the relationship between these measures and clinical outcomes. No associations were found between Gp1b+MPs and clinical outcomes for any of the cohorts. When stratified by quartile, associations were found for survival, ventilation-free breathing, and thrombocytopenia with αIIbβIIIa+and TLT-1+MPs (χ2p< 0.001). Notably, 63 of 64 patients in this study who failed to achieve unassisted breathing had TLT+PMP in the 75th percentile. In all three cohorts, patients whose TLT+MP counts were higher than the median had higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation III scores, were more likely to present with thrombocytopenia and were 3.7 times (p< 0.001) more likely to die than patients with lower TLT+PMP after adjusting for other risk factors. CONCLUSIONS:Although both αIIbβIIIa+and TLT+microparticles (αIIbβIIIa, TLT-1) were associated with mortality, TLT-1+MPs demonstrated stronger correlations with Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation III scores, unassisted breathing, and multiple system organ failure. These findings warrant further exploration of the mechanistic role of TLT-1+PMP in ARDS or acute lung injury progression.more » « less

A<sc>bstract</sc> Recent research has leveraged the tractability of$$ T\overline{T} $$ style deformations to formulate timelike-bounded patches of three-dimensional bulk spacetimes includingdS3. This proceeds by breaking the problem into two parts: a solvable theory that captures the most entropic energy bands, and a tuning algorithm to treat additional effects and fine structure. We point out that the method extends readily to higher dimensions, and in particular does not require factorization of the fullT2operator (the higher dimensional analogue of$$ T\overline{T} $$ defined in [1]). Focusing ondS4, we first define a solvable theory at finiteNvia a restrictedT2deformation of theCFT3onS2×ℝ, in whichTis replaced by the form it would take in symmetric homogeneous states, containing only diagonal energy densityE/Vand pressure (-dE/dV) components. This explicitly defines a finite-N solvable sector ofdS4/deformed-CFT3, capturing the radial geometry and count of the entropically dominant energy band, reproducing the Gibbons-Hawking entropy as a state count. To accurately capture local bulk excitations ofdS4including gravitons, we build a deformation algorithm in direct analogy to the case ofdS3with bulk matter recently proposed in [2]. This starts with an infinitesimal stint of the solvable deformation as a regulator. The full microscopic theory is built by adding renormalized versions ofT2and other operators at each step, defined by matching to bulk local calculations when they apply, including an uplift fromAdS4/CFT3todS4(as is available in hyperbolic compactifications of M theory). The details of the bulk-local algorithm depend on the choice of boundary conditions; we summarize the status of these in GR and beyond, illustrating our method for the case of the cylindrical Dirichlet condition which can be UV completed by our finite quantum theory.more » « less

Abstract We present results from an atmospheric retrieval analysis of Gl 229B using the Brewster retrieval code. We find the best fit model to be cloud-free, consistent with the T dwarf retrieval work of Line et al.; Zalesky et al. and Gonzales et al. Fundamental parameters (mass, radius, log(LBol/LSun), log(g)) determined from our model agree within 1σto SED-derived values, except forTeffwhere our retrievedTeffis approximately 100 K cooler than the evolutionary model-based SED value. We find a retrieved mass of MJup, however, we also find that the observables of Gl 229B can be explained by a cloud-free model with a prior on mass at the dynamical value, 70MJup. We are able to constrain abundances for H2O, CO, CH4, NH3, Na and K and find a supersolar C/O ratio as compared to its primary, Gl 229A. We report an overall subsolar metallicity due to atmospheric oxygen depletion, but find a solar [C/H], which matches that of the primary. We find that this work contributes to a growing trend in retrieval-based studies, particularly for brown dwarfs, toward supersolar C/O ratios and discuss the implications of this result on formation mechanisms and internal physical processes, as well as model biases.more » « less

Abstract The availability of materials with high electrocaloric (EC) strengths is critical to enabling EC refrigeration in practical applications. Although large EC entropy changes, ΔSEC, and temperature changes, ΔTEC, have been achieved in traditional thin‐film ceramics and polymer ferroelectrics, they require the application of very high electric fields and thus their EC strengths ΔSEC/ΔEand ΔTEC/ΔEare too low for practical applications. Here, a fundamental thermodynamic description is developed, and extraordinarily large EC strengths of a metal‐free perovskite ferroelectric [MDABCO](NH4)I3(MDABCO) are predicted. The predicted EC strengths: isothermal ΔSEC/ΔEand adiabatic ΔTEC/ΔEfor MDABCO are 18 J m kg−1K−1MV−1and 8.06 K m MV−1, respectively, more than three times the largest reported values in BaTiO3single crystals. These predictions strongly suggest the metal‐free ferroelectric family of materials as the best candidates among existing materials for EC applications. The present work not only presents a general approach to developing thermodynamic potential energy functions for ferroelectric materials but also suggests a family of candidate materials with potentially extremely high EC performance.more » « less
