Title: Measurement of the inclusive and differential t$$ \overline{t} $$γ cross sections in the dilepton channel and effective field theory interpretation in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV
A bstract The production cross section of a top quark pair in association with a photon is measured in proton-proton collisions in the decay channel with two oppositely charged leptons ( e ± μ ∓ , e + e − , or μ + μ − ). The measurement is performed using 138 fb − 1 of proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV during the 2016–2018 data-taking period of the CERN LHC. A fiducial phase space is defined such that photons radiated by initial-state particles, top quarks, or any of their decay products are included. An inclusive cross section of 175 . 2 ± 2 . 5(stat) ± 6 . 3(syst) fb is measured in a signal region with at least one jet coming from the hadronization of a bottom quark and exactly one photon with transverse momentum above 20 GeV. Differential cross sections are measured as functions of several kinematic observables of the photon, leptons, and jets, and compared to standard model predictions. The measurements are also interpreted in the standard model effective field theory framework, and limits are found on the relevant Wilson coefficients from these results alone and in combination with a previous CMS measurement of the t $$ \overline{t} $$ t ¯ γ production process using the lepton+jets final state.  more » « less

A measurement of the top quark pole mass$$ {m}_{\textrm{t}}^{\textrm{pole}} $$mtpolein events where a top quark-antiquark pair ($$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$tt¯) is produced in association with at least one additional jet ($$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$tt¯+jet) is presented. This analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at$$ \sqrt{s} $$s= 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb1. Events with two opposite-sign leptons in the final state (e+e,μ+μ, e±μ) are analyzed. The reconstruction of the main observable and the event classification are optimized using multivariate analysis techniques based on machine learning. The production cross section is measured as a function of the inverse of the invariant mass of the$$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$tt¯+jet system at the parton level using a maximum likelihood unfolding. Given a reference parton distribution function (PDF), the top quark pole mass is extracted using the theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order. For the ABMP16NLO PDF, this results in$$ {m}_{\textrm{t}}^{\textrm{pole}} $$mtpole= 172.93±1.36 GeV.

  2. A bstract The first measurement of the top quark pair ( $$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$ t t ¯ ) production cross section in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 . 6 TeV is presented. Data recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in Summer 2022, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 . 21 fb − 1 , are analyzed. Events are selected with one or two charged leptons (electrons or muons) and additional jets. A maximum likelihood fit is performed in event categories defined by the number and flavors of the leptons, the number of jets, and the number of jets identified as originating from b quarks. An inclusive $$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$ t t ¯ production cross section of 881 ± 23 (stat + syst) ± 20 (lumi) pb is measured, in agreement with the standard model prediction of $$ {924}_{-40}^{+32} $$ 924 − 40 + 32 pb.

  3. A bstract The production of a top quark-antiquark pair in association with a W boson ( $$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{W} $$ t t ¯ W ) is measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analyzed data was recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 . Events with two or three leptons (electrons and muons) and additional jets are selected. In events with two leptons, a multiclass neural network is used to distinguish between the signal and background processes. Events with three leptons are categorized based on the number of jets and of jets originating from b quark hadronization, and the lepton charges. The inclusive $$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{W} $$ t t ¯ W production cross section in the full phase space is measured to be 868 ± 40(stat) ± 51(syst) fb. The $$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{W} $$ t t ¯ W + and $$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{W} $$ t t ¯ W − cross sections are also measured as 553 ± 30(stat) ± 30(syst) and 343 ± 26(stat) ± 25(syst) fb, respectively, and the corresponding ratio of the two cross sections is found to be $$ 1.61\pm 0.15{\left(\textrm{stat}\right)}_{-0.05}^{+0.07}\left(\textrm{syst}\right) $$ 1.61 ± 0.15 stat − 0.05 + 0.07 syst . The measured cross sections are larger than but consistent with the standard model predictions within two standard deviations, and represent the most precise measurement of these cross sections to date.

  4. A bstract Measurements of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections for the Higgs boson production in the H → ZZ → 4 ℓ ( ℓ = e , μ ) decay channel are presented. The results are obtained from the analysis of proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 . The measured inclusive fiducial cross section is 2 . 73 ± 0 . 26 fb, in agreement with the standard model expectation of 2 . 86 ± 0 . 1 fb. Differential cross sections are measured as a function of several kinematic observables sensitive to the Higgs boson production and decay to four leptons. A set of double-differential measurements is also performed, yielding a comprehensive characterization of the four leptons final state. Constraints on the Higgs boson trilinear coupling and on the bottom and charm quark coupling modifiers are derived from its transverse momentum distribution. All results are consistent with theoretical predictions from the standard model.

The charge-parity (CP) structure of the Yukawa interaction between the Higgs (H) boson and the top quark is measured in a data sample enriched in the t$$ \overline{\textrm{t}} $$t¯H and tH associated production, using 138 fb1of data collected in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$s= 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The study targets events where the H boson decays via H → WW or H →ττand the top quarks decay via t → Wb: the W bosons decay either leptonically or hadronically, and final states characterized by the presence of at least two leptons are studied. Machine learning techniques are applied to these final states to enhance the separation ofCP-even fromCP-odd scenarios. Two-dimensional confidence regions are set onκtand$$ \overset{\sim }{\kappa } $$κ~t, which are respectively defined as theCP-even andCP-odd top-Higgs Yukawa coupling modifiers. No significant fractionalCP-odd contributions, parameterized by the quantity|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt|are observed; the parameter is determined to be|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt|= 0.59 with an interval of (0.24,0.81) at 68% confidence level. The results are combined with previous results covering the HZZ and H→ γγdecay modes, yielding two- and one-dimensional confidence regions onκtand$$ \overset{\sim }{\kappa } $$κ~t, while|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt|is determined to be|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt|= 0.28 with an interval of|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt| <0.55 at 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard modelCP-even prediction of|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt|= 0.
