Title: Analysis of the CP structure of the Yukawa coupling between the Higgs boson and τ leptons in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV
A bstract The first measurement of the CP structure of the Yukawa coupling between the Higgs boson and τ leptons is presented. The measurement is based on data collected in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb − 1 . The analysis uses the angular correlation between the decay planes of τ leptons produced in Higgs boson decays. The effective mixing angle between CP -even and CP -odd τ Yukawa couplings is found to be − 1 ± 19°, compared to an expected value of 0 ± 21° at the 68.3% confidence level. The data disfavour the pure CP -odd scenario at 3.0 standard deviations. The results are compatible with predictions for the standard model Higgs boson.  more » « less

  1. Abstract A study of the charge conjugation and parity ( $$\textit{CP}$$ CP ) properties of the interaction between the Higgs boson and $$\tau $$ τ -leptons is presented. The study is based on a measurement of $$\textit{CP}$$ CP -sensitive angular observables defined by the visible decay products of $$\tau $$ τ -leptons produced in Higgs boson decays. The analysis uses 139 fb $$^{-1}$$ - 1 of proton–proton collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s}= 13$$ s = 13  TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Contributions from $$\textit{CP}$$ CP -violating interactions between the Higgs boson and $$\tau $$ τ -leptons are described by a single mixing angle parameter $$\phi _{\tau }$$ ϕ τ in the generalised Yukawa interaction. Without constraining the $$H\rightarrow \tau \tau $$ H → τ τ signal strength to its expected value under the Standard Model hypothesis, the mixing angle $$\phi _{\tau }$$ ϕ τ is measured to be $$9^{\circ } \pm 16^{\circ }$$ 9 ∘ ± 16 ∘ , with an expected value of $$0^{\circ } \pm 28^{\circ }$$ 0 ∘ ± 28 ∘ at the 68% confidence level. The pure $$\textit{CP}$$ CP -odd hypothesis is disfavoured at a level of 3.4 standard deviations. The results are compatible with the predictions for the Higgs boson in the Standard Model.

The charge-parity (CP) structure of the Yukawa interaction between the Higgs (H) boson and the top quark is measured in a data sample enriched in the t$$ \overline{\textrm{t}} $$t¯H and tH associated production, using 138 fb1of data collected in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$s= 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The study targets events where the H boson decays via H → WW or H →ττand the top quarks decay via t → Wb: the W bosons decay either leptonically or hadronically, and final states characterized by the presence of at least two leptons are studied. Machine learning techniques are applied to these final states to enhance the separation ofCP-even fromCP-odd scenarios. Two-dimensional confidence regions are set onκtand$$ \overset{\sim }{\kappa } $$κ~t, which are respectively defined as theCP-even andCP-odd top-Higgs Yukawa coupling modifiers. No significant fractionalCP-odd contributions, parameterized by the quantity|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt|are observed; the parameter is determined to be|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt|= 0.59 with an interval of (0.24,0.81) at 68% confidence level. The results are combined with previous results covering the HZZ and H→ γγdecay modes, yielding two- and one-dimensional confidence regions onκtand$$ \overset{\sim }{\kappa } $$κ~t, while|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt|is determined to be|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt|= 0.28 with an interval of|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt| <0.55 at 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard modelCP-even prediction of|$$ {f}_{CP}^{\textrm{Htt}} $$fCPHtt|= 0.

Three searches are presented for signatures of physics beyond the standard model (SM) inττfinal states in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, using a data sample collected with the CMS detector at$$ \sqrt{s} $$s= 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb1. Upper limits at 95% confidence level (CL) are set on the products of the branching fraction for the decay intoτleptons and the cross sections for the production of a new bosonϕ, in addition to the H(125) boson, via gluon fusion (ggϕ) or in association with b quarks, ranging from$$ \mathcal{O} $$O(10 pb) for a mass of 60 GeV to 0.3 fb for a mass of 3.5 TeV each. The data reveal two excesses for ggϕproduction with localp-values equivalent to about three standard deviations atmϕ= 0.1 and 1.2 TeV. In a search fort-channel exchange of a vector leptoquark U1, 95% CL upper limits are set on the dimensionless U1leptoquark coupling to quarks andτleptons ranging from 1 for a mass of 1 TeV to 6 for a mass of 5 TeV, depending on the scenario. In the interpretations of the$$ {M}_{\textrm{h}}^{125} $$Mh125and$$ {M}_{\textrm{h},\textrm{EFT}}^{125} $$Mh,EFT125minimal supersymmetric SM benchmark scenarios, additional Higgs bosons with masses below 350 GeV are excluded at 95% CL.

    Abstract The rate for Higgs ( $${\mathrm{H}} $$ H ) bosons production in association with either one ( $${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t H ) or two ( $${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t t ¯ H ) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton–proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of $$13\,\text {TeV} $$ 13 TeV by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 . The analysis is aimed at events that contain $${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{W}} {\mathrm{W}} $$ H → W W , $${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\uptau } {\uptau } $$ H → τ τ , or $${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $$ H → Z Z decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among $${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t H , $${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t t ¯ H , and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the $${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t t ¯ H and $${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t H signals correspond to $$0.92 \pm 0.19\,\text {(stat)} ^{+0.17}_{-0.13}\,\text {(syst)} $$ 0.92 ± 0.19 (stat) - 0.13 + 0.17 (syst) and $$5.7 \pm 2.7\,\text {(stat)} \pm 3.0\,\text {(syst)} $$ 5.7 ± 2.7 (stat) ± 3.0 (syst) of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for $${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t t ¯ H , and to 1.4 (0.3) for $${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t H production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling $$y_{{\mathrm{t}}}$$ y t of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, $$\kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}=y_{{\mathrm{t}}}/y_{{\mathrm{t}}}^{\mathrm {SM}}$$ κ t = y t / y t SM , is constrained to be within $$-0.9< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< -0.7$$ - 0.9 < κ t < - 0.7 or $$0.7< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< 1.1$$ 0.7 < κ t < 1.1 , at 95% confidence level. This result is the most sensitive measurement of the $${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t t ¯ H production rate to date.

A bstract In this paper, a new technique for reconstructing and identifying hadronically decaying τ + τ − pairs with a large Lorentz boost, referred to as the di- τ tagger, is developed and used for the first time in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. A benchmark di- τ tagging selection is employed in the search for resonant Higgs boson pair production, where one Higgs boson decays into a boosted $$ b\overline{b} $$ b b ¯ pair and the other into a boosted τ + τ − pair, with two hadronically decaying τ -leptons in the final state. Using 139 fb − 1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, the efficiency of the di- τ tagger is determined and the background with quark- or gluon-initiated jets misidentified as di- τ objects is estimated. The search for a heavy, narrow, scalar resonance produced via gluon-gluon fusion and decaying into two Higgs bosons is carried out in the mass range 1–3 TeV using the same dataset. No deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed, and 95% confidence-level exclusion limits are set on this model.
