Title: Mn substitution in the topological metal Zr 2 Te 2 P
Abstract Results are reported for Mn intercalated Zr 2 Te 2 P, where x-ray diffraction , energy dispersive spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy measurements reveal that the van der Waals bonded Te–Te layers are partially filled by Zr and Mn ions. This leads to the chemical formulas Zr 0.07 Zr 2 Te 2 P and Mn 0.06 Zr 0.03 Zr 2 Te 2 P for the parent and substituted compounds, respectively. The impact of the Mn ions is seen in the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility, where Curie–Weiss fits to the data indicate that the Mn ions are in the divalent state. Heat capacity and electrical transport measurements reveal metallic behavior, but the electronic coefficient of the heat capacity ( γ Mn ≈ 36.6 mJ (mol·K 2 ) −1 ) is enhanced by comparison to that of the parent compound. Magnetic ordering is seen at T M ≈ 4  K, where heat capacity measurements additionally show that the phase transition is broad, likely due to the disordered Mn distribution. This transition also strongly reduces the electronic scattering seen in the normalized electrical resistance. These results show that Mn substitution simultaneously introduces magnetic interactions and tunes the electronic state, which improves prospects for inducing novel behavior in Zr 2 Te 2 P and the broader family of ternary tetradymites.  more » « less

  1. Abstract

The crystal structure, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), heat capacity, and anisotropic magnetic and resistivity measurements are reported for Sn flux grown single crystals of orthorhombic Pr2Co3Ge5(U2Co3Si5-type,Ibam). Our findings show thato-Pr2Co3Ge5hosts nearly trivalent Pr ions, as evidenced by EELS and fits to temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements. Complex magnetic ordering with a partially spin-polarized state emerges nearTsp= 32 K, with a spin reconfiguration transition nearTM= 15 K. Heat capacity measurements show that the phase transitions appear as broad peaks in the vicinity ofTspandTM. The magnetic entropy further reveals that crystal electric field splitting lifts the Hund’s rule degeneracy at low temperatures. Taken together, these measurements show that Pr2Co3Ge5is an environment for complexfstate magnetism with potential strongly correlated electron states.

  2. Abstract

Unveiling the underlying mechanisms of properties of functional materials, including the luminescence differences among similar pyrochlores A2B2O7, opens new gateways to select proper hosts for various optoelectronic applications by scientists and engineers. For example, although La2Zr2O7(LZO) and La2Hf2O7(LHO) pyrochlores have similar chemical compositional and crystallographic structural features, they demonstrate different luminescence properties both before and after doped with Eu3+ions. Based on our earlier work, LHO‐based nanophosphors display higher photo‐ and radioluminescence intensity, higher quantum efficiency, and longer excited state lifetime compared to LZO‐based nanophosphors. Moreover, under electronic O2−→Zr4+/Hf4+transition excitation at 306 nm, undoped LHO nanoparticles (NPs) have only violet blue emission, whereas LZO NPs show violet blue and red emissions. In this study, we have combined experimental and density functional theory (DFT) based theoretical calculation to explain the observed results. First, we calculated the density of state (DOS) based on DFT and studied the energetics of ionized oxygen vacancies in the band gaps of LZO and LHO theoretically, which explain their underlying luminescence difference. For Eu3+‐doped NPs, we performed emission intensity and lifetime calculations and found that the LHOE NPs have higher host to dopant energy transfer efficiency than the LZOE NPs (59.3% vs 24.6%), which accounts for the optical performance superiority of the former over the latter. Moreover, by corroborating our experimental data with the DFT calculations, we suggest that the Eu3+doping states in LHO present at exact energy position (both in majority and minority spin components) where oxygen defect states are located unlike those in LZO. Lastly, both the NPs show negligible photobleaching highlighting their potential for bioimaging applications. This current report provides a deeper understanding of the advantages of LHO over LZO as an advanced host for phosphors, scintillators, and fluoroimmunoassays.

  3. Abstract Magnetic and electronic properties of quantum materials heavily rely on the crystal structure even in the same chemical compositions. In this study, it is demonstrated that a layered tetragonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 structure can be obtained by treating bulk trigonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 under high pressure (6 GPa) and high temperature (600 °C). Magnetization measurements of the newly formed layered tetragonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 confirm an antiferromagnetic ordering with Neel temperature ( T N ) around 16 K, which is significantly higher than that ( T N ≈ 7 K) of trigonal EuCd 2 Sb 2 , consistent with heat capacity measurements. Moreover, bad metal behavior is observed in the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and the resistivity shows a dramatic increase around the Neel temperature. Electronic structure calculations with local density approximation dynamic mean–field theory (LDA+DMFT) show that this material is strongly correlated with well‐formed large magnetic moments, due to Hund's coupling, which is known to dramatically suppress the Kondo scale.

  4. Abstract

We report a layered ternary selenide BaPt4Se6featuring sesqui-selenide Pt2Se3layers sandwiched by Ba atoms. The Pt2Se3layers in this compound can be derived from the Dirac-semimetal PtSe2phase with Se vacancies that form a honeycomb structure. This structure results in a Pt (VI) and Pt (II) mixed-valence compound with both PtSe6octahedra and PtSe4square net coordination configurations. Temperature-dependent electrical transport measurements suggest two distinct anomalies: a resistivity crossover, mimic to the metal-insulator (M-I) transition at ~150 K, and a resistivity plateau at temperatures below 10 K. The resistivity crossover is not associated with any structural, magnetic, or charge order modulated phase transitions. Magnetoresistivity, Hall, and heat capacity measurements concurrently suggest an existing hidden state below 5 K in this system. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal a metallic state and no dramatic reconstruction of the electronic structure up to 200 K.

  5. Abstract

We report a theoretical investigation of effects of Mn and Co substitution in the transition metal sites of the kagomé-lattice ferromagnet, Fe3Sn2. Herein, hole- and electron-doping effects of Fe3Sn2have been studied by density-functional theory calculations on the parent phase and on the substituted structural models of Fe3−xMxSn2(M = Mn, Co;x= 0.5, 1.0). All optimized structures favor the ferromagnetic ground state. Analysis of the electronic density of states (DOS) and band structure plots reveals that the hole (electron) doping leads to a progressive decrease (increase) in the magnetic moment per Fe atom and per unit cell overall. The high DOS is retained nearby the Fermi level in the case of both Mn and Co substitutions. The electron doping with Co results in the loss of nodal band degeneracies, while in the case of hole doping with Mn emergent nodal band degeneracies and flatbands initially are suppressed in Fe2.5Mn0.5Sn2but re-emerge in Fe2MnSn2. These results provide key insights into potential modifications of intriguing coupling between electronic and spin degrees of freedom observed in Fe3Sn2.
