Title: Solid‐State Investigation, Storage, and Separation of Pyrophoric PH 3 and P 2 H 4 with α‐Mg Formate
Abstract

Phosphane, PH3—a highly pyrophoric and toxic gas—is frequently contaminated with H2and P2H4, which makes its handling even more dangerous. The inexpensive metal–organic framework (MOF) magnesium formate, α‐[Mg(O2CH)2], can adsorb up to 10 wt % of PH3. The PH3‐loaded MOF, PH3@α‐[Mg(O2CH)2], is a non‐pyrophoric, recoverable material that even allows brief handling in air, thereby minimizing the hazards associated with the handling and transport of phosphane. α‐[Mg(O2CH)2] further plays a critical role in purifying PH3from H2and P2H4: at 25 °C, H2passes through the MOF channels without adsorption, whereas PH3adsorbs readily and only slowly desorbs under a flow of inert gas (complete desorption time≈6 h). Diphosphane, P2H4, is strongly adsorbed and trapped within the MOF for at least 4 months. P2H4@α‐[Mg(O2CH)2] itself is not pyrophoric and is air‐ and light‐stable at room temperature.

  1. Abstract

    Reactions of (O=)PH(OCH2CH3)2and BrMg(CH2)mCH=CH2(4.9–3.2 equiv;m=4 (a), 5 (b), 6 (c)) give the dialkylphosphine oxides (O=)PH[(CH2)mCH=CH2]2(2 ac; 77–81 % after workup), which are treated with NaH and then α,ω‐dibromides Br(CH2)nBr (0.49–0.32 equiv;n=8 (a′), 10 (b′), 12 (c′), 14 (d′)) to yield the bis(trialkylphosphine oxides) [H2C=CH(CH2)m]2P(=O)(CH2)n(O=)P[(CH2)mCH=CH2]2(3 ab′,3 bc′,3 cd′,3 ca′; 79–84 %). Reactions of3 bc′and3 ca′with Grubbs’ first‐generation catalyst and then H2/PtO2afford the dibridgehead diphosphine dioxides(4 bc′,4 ca′; 14–19 %,n′=2m+2);31P NMR spectra show two stereoisomeric species (ca. 70:30). Crystal structures of two isomers of the latter are obtained,out,out4 ca′and a conformer ofin,out4 ca′that features crossed chains, such that the (O=)P vectors appearout,out. Whereas4 bc′resists crystallization, a byproduct derived from an alternative metathesis mode, (CH2)12P(=O)(CH2)12(O=)P(CH2)12, as well as3 ab′and3 bc′, are structurally characterized. The efficiencies of other routes to dibridgehead diphosphorus compounds are compared.

  3. Abstract

A tetra(carboxylated) PCP pincer ligand has been synthesized as a building block for porous coordination polymers (PCPs). The air‐ and moisture‐stable PCP metalloligands are rigid tetratopic linkers that are geometrically akin to ligands used in the synthesis of robust metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Here, the design principle is demonstrated by cyclometalation with PdIICl and subsequent use of the metalloligand to prepare a crystalline 3D MOF by direct reaction with CoIIions and structural resolution by single crystal X‐ray diffraction. The Pd−Cl groups inside the pores are accessible to post‐synthetic modifications that facilitate chemical reactions previously unobserved in MOFs: a Pd−CH3activated material undergoes rapid insertion of CO2gas to give Pd−OC(O)CH3at 1 atm and 298 K. However, since the material is highly selective for the adsorption of CO2over CO, a Pd−N3modified version resists CO insertion under the same conditions.

  4. Abstract

Ammonia is a widely used toxic industrial chemical that can cause severe respiratory ailments. Therefore, understanding and developing materials for its efficient capture and controlled release is necessary. One such class of materials is 3D porous metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) with exceptional surface areas and robust structures, ideal for gas storage/transport applications. Herein, interactions between ammonia and UiO‐67‐X (X: H, NH2, CH3) zirconium MOFs were studied under cryogenic, ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions using temperature‐programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD‐MS) and in‐situ temperature‐programmed infrared (TP‐IR) spectroscopy. Ammonia was observed to interact with μ3−OH groups present on the secondary building unit of UiO‐67‐X MOFs via hydrogen bonding. TP‐IR studies revealed that under cryogenic UHV conditions, UiO‐67‐X MOFs are stable towards ammonia sorption. Interestingly, an increase in the intensity of the C−H stretching mode of the MOF linkers was detected upon ammonia exposure, attributed to NH−π interactions with linkers. These same binding interactions were observed in grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Based on TPD‐MS, binding strength of ammonia to three MOFs was determined to be approximately 60 kJ mol−1, suggesting physisorption of ammonia to UiO‐67‐X. In addition, missing linker defect sites, consisting of H2O coordinated to Zr4+sites, were detected through the formation ofnNH3⋅H2O clusters, characterized through in‐situ IR spectroscopy. Structures consistent with these assignments were identified through density functional theory calculations. Tracking these bands through adsorption on thermally activated MOFs gave insight into the dehydroxylation process of UiO‐67 MOFs. This highlights an advantage of using NH3for the structural analysis of MOFs and developing an understanding of interactions between ammonia and UiO‐67‐X zirconium MOFs, while also providing directions for the development of stable materials for efficient toxic gas sorption.

  5. Abstract

Direct nonoxidative methane conversion (DNMC) transforms CH4to higher (C2+) hydrocarbons and H2in a single step, but its utility is challenged by low CH4 equilibrium conversion, carbon deposition (coking), and its endothermic reaction energy requirement. This work reports a heat‐exchanged autothermal H2‐permeable tubular membrane reactor composed of a thin mixed ionic‐electronic conducting SrCe0.7Zr0.2Eu0.1O3–δmembrane supported on a porous SrCe0.8Zr0.2O3–δ tube in which a Fe/SiO2 DNMC catalyst is packed, that concurrently tackles all of these challenges. The H2‐permeation flux drives CH4 conversion. O2from an air simulant (O2/He mixture) sweep outside the membrane reacts with permeated H2 to provide heat for the endothermic DNMC reaction. The energy balance between the endothermic DNMC and exothermic H2 combustion on opposite sides of the membrane is achieved, demonstrating the feasibility for autothermal operation using a simple air sweep gas. Moreover, the back diffusion of O2 from the sweep side to the catalyst side oxidizes any deposited carbon into CO. Thus, for the first time demonstrating all the desired attributes, a heat‐exchanged H2‐permeable membrane reactor capable of achieving single‐step auto‐thermal DNMC catalysis while simultaneously improving CH4conversion and preventing coking is achieved.
