Abstract Polymatroids are combinatorial abstractions of subspace arrangements in the same way that matroids are combinatorial abstractions of hyperplane arrangements. By introducing augmented Chow rings of polymatroids, modeled after augmented wonderful varieties of subspace arrangements, we generalize several algebro-geometric techniques developed in recent years to study matroids. We show that intersection numbers in the augmented Chow ring of a polymatroid are determined by a matching property known as the Hall–Rado condition, which is new even in the case of matroids.

Wonderful compactifications and rational curves with cyclic action
Abstract We prove that the moduli space of rational curves with cyclic action, constructed in our previous work, is realizable as a wonderful compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a product of projective spaces. By proving a general result on such wonderful compactifications, we conclude that this moduli space is Chow-equivalent to an explicit toric variety (whose fan can be understood as a tropical version of the moduli space), from which a computation of its Chow ring follows.

Abstract Projective duality identifies the moduli spaces $$\textbf{B}_n$$ and $$\textbf{X}(3,n)$$ parametrizing linearly general configurations of $$n$$ points in $$\mathbb{P}^2$$ and $$n$$ lines in the dual $$\mathbb{P}^2$$, respectively. The space $$\textbf{X}(3,n)$$ admits Kapranov’s Chow quotient compactification $$\overline{\textbf{X}}(3,n)$$, studied also by Lafforgue, Hacking, Keel, Tevelev, and Alexeev, which gives an example of a KSBA moduli space of stable surfaces: it carries a family of certain reducible degenerations of $$\mathbb{P}^2$$ with $$n$$ “broken lines”. Gerritzen and Piwek proposed a dual perspective, a compact moduli space parametrizing certain reducible degenerations of $$\mathbb{P}^2$$ with $$n$$ smooth points. We investigate the relation between these approaches, answering a question of Kapranov from 2003.more » « less

We study the topology of Hitchin fibrations via abelian surfaces. We establish the P=W conjecture for genus 2 2 curves and arbitrary rank. In higher genus and arbitrary rank, we prove that P=W holds for the subalgebra of cohomology generated by even tautological classes. Furthermore, we show that all tautological generators lie in the correct pieces of the perverse filtration as predicted by the P=W conjecture. In combination with recent work of Mellit, this reduces the full conjecture to the multiplicativity of the perverse filtration. Our main technique is to study the Hitchin fibration as a degeneration of the Hilbert–Chow morphism associated with the moduli space of certain torsion sheaves on an abelian surface, where the symmetries induced by Markman’s monodromy operators play a crucial role.more » « less

Abstract We define and study the totally nonnegative part of the Chow quotient of the Grassmannian, or more simply thenonnegative configuration space. This space has a natural stratification bypositive Chow cells, and we show that nonnegative configuration space is homeomorphic to a polytope as a stratified space. We establish bijections between positive Chow cells and the following sets: (a) regular subdivisions of the hypersimplex into positroid polytopes, (b) the set of cones in the positive tropical Grassmannian, and (c) the set of cones in the positive Dressian. Our work is motivated by connections to super Yang–Mills scattering amplitudes, which will be discussed in a sequel.more » « less

Abstract We define kappa classes on moduli spaces of Kollár-Shepherd-Barron-Alexeev (KSBA)-stable varieties and pairs, generalizing the Miller–Morita–Mumford classes on moduli of curves, and computing them in some cases where the virtual fundamental class is known to exist, including Burniat and Campedelli surfaces. For Campedelli surfaces, an intermediate step is finding the Chow (same as cohomology) ring of the GIT quotient$$(\mathbb {P}^2)^7//SL(3)$$.more » « less
