This paper shares four Sea Grant-funded projects from across the United States. The Hawai‘i project integrates Western science and Hawaiian culture in place- and community-based teaching. The Maryland program takes a project-based learning approach to aquaculture education in the formal education system. The Massachusetts (MIT) project focuses on state-of-the-art technology in engineering, robotics, and ocean science. The Virginia project emphasizes science communication and lesson plan design. What all four projects have in common is their focus on environmental literacy and teacher professional development in formal education. This approach aims to raise the quality of STEM instruction by expanding teachers’ knowledge, skills, and resources. Training teachers also efficiently utilizes resources by maximizing the number of students we ultimately reach, thereby creating sustainability.

                            A Campus Huaka‘i: Weaving Geological, Historical & Cultural Perspectives in Hawai‘i
                        
                    
    
            The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa is striving to become a Native Hawaiian place of learning. As part of this effort, we developed a huaka‘i (fieldtrip) to explore the intertwined geological, historical, and cultural influences on our campus. Our purpose is two-fold: (1) to showcase an example of how science can be taught in ways that honor Hawaiian culture and history; and (2) to stimulate interest and collaborations among faculty to develop additional place-based curricula offerings that draw connections between Hawaiian culture and Western science. Evaluations of a pilot fieldtrip generated considerable positive and constructive feedback, which was used to significantly improve the fieldtrip. In this paper, we share an abbreviated version of the current fieldtrip, and sincerely welcome any additional comments and suggestions.

            This experience report describes two years of work integrating coding with Micro:bits and Makecode into a Hawaiian immersion bilingual school setting to teach computer science (CS) skills in a place-based approach. This report highlights the collaborative partnerships and programs between a public Hawaiian immersion school, a non-profit organization that manages important cultural sites, and a university lab that develops sustainable technology. Students identified the importance of sustainability in computing by engaging with past, present, and future technologies in culturally relevant contexts.             NA (Ed.)Teacher leadership and agency can provide time sensitive, trusted information during times of uncertainty. A Native Hawaiian teacher’s place and culture-based COVID-19 lessons inspired a multidisciplinary team funded by NSF and NIH to develop four place-based, culturally responsive COVID-19 curricular modules. Educator-led outreach via in-person and online presentations was coupled with a project website that provided K-12 educators with independent learning to support teaching of COVID-19 in the contexts of: 1) historical epidemics in Hawai’i, 2) student inquiry into family health, 3) protection and prevention, and 4) vaccines, variants, and disinformation. Major findings include high ratings from Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander educators, increased downloads of modules following outreach, selection of Module I History of Infectious Diseases in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific as most valuable, and high engagement of elementary teachers. Teachers were most concerned about students mental health and disinformation. Those who taught the curriculum gave higher rating to leadership and governance in their schools and communities and were most interested in professional development as public health educators. Findings suggest that place-, culture-, and inquiry-based curriculum and professional development situated in students’ lives and communities has the potential to support teachers as public health leaders and communicators during times of change and uncertainty.more » « less

            Hawaiian bilingual language immersion (Kaiapuni) schools infuse curricula with place-based education to increase student connection to culture. However, stand-in teachers often lack the background and tools needed to support immersion learning, resulting in discontinuity for students in their culturally relevant education. This experience report describes a partnership between the Ka Moamoa Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Ke Kula Kaiapuni 'O Pu'ohala School to design a teacher-substitute support platform via a hybrid of assets-based design methodology and emerging technology capabilities. We share insights offered by teachers and design requirements for such a platform. We also reflect on how HCI methodologies should adapt to center and respect Native Hawaiian perspectives.more » « less
