Title: Frequency and types of alternative breeding strategies employed by nesting American black ducks in North Carolina
Although most birds are considered to be at least partially monogamous, molecular evidence continues to uncover that many species can have multiple sexual mates. Many species of Waterfowl (Order Anseriformes) consistently deploy alternative breeding strategies, and although cavity nesting species have been well studied, few attempts to understand rates of alternative breeding strategies exist in the Anatini tribe. Here, we assay mitochondrial DNA and thousands of nuclear markers across 20 broods of American black ducks ( Anas rubripes ; “black duck”) that included 19 females and 172 offspring to study population structure as well as types and rates of secondary breeding strategies in coastal North Carolina. First, we report high levels of relatedness among nesting black ducks and offspring and while 17 (of 19) females were of pure black duck descent, three were found to be black duck x mallard ( A . platyrhynchos ) hybrids. Next, we evaluated for mismatched mitochondrial DNA and paternity identities across each female’s clutch to determine types and frequency of alternative or secondary breeding strategies. Although we report that nest parasitism occurred in two nests, 37% (7 of 19) of the sampled nests were multi-paternal as a result of extra-pair copulation. In addition to being part of a mix of strategies used to increase fecundity by successfully breeding females, we posit nest densities providing easier alternative mate access for males also explains high rates of extra-pair copulation among our sampled black ducks. Ultimately, however, while some proportion of females of many species engage in forms of secondary breeding strategies, we conclude that the decision to do so appears to be seasonally flexible for each individual.  more » « less

  1. ABSTRACT Biparental care is common in socially monogamous avian species, but both partners may seek extra‐pair copulations (EPCs). The relative costs and benefits of EPCs between the sexes are likely complex, yet the implications of EPCs for parental care behavior have been examined predominantly in males. Not only could females benefit from EPCs, but females would have additional information about the likelihood of extra‐pair young (EPY) in their nest not available to their partners, which likely influences female behavior. We examined how the presence and abundance of EPY in a nest affect parental behavior in a socially monogamous songbird, song sparrows (Melospiza melodia). We predicted that females who mated outside the social pair would invest more in a clutch with a higher probability of EPY. We monitored nest visitation rates by male and female social partners as a proxy for parental investment and quantified extra‐pair paternity in 45 nests. Maternal visitation rates were higher in nests with EPY compared to nests without, while males did not adjust their investment in relation to the presence of EPY. These findings support our prediction that females who participated in EPC would invest more in the resulting offspring.

  2. Human disturbance impacts the breeding behavior of many species, and it is particularly important to understand how these human-caused changes affect vulnerable taxa, such as turtles. Habitat alteration can change the amount and quality of suitable nesting habitat, while human presence during nesting may influence nesting behavior. Consequently, both habitat alteration and human presence can influence the microhabitat that females choose for nesting. In the summer of 2019, we located emydid turtle nests in east-central Alabama, USA, in areas with varying levels of human disturbance (high, intermediate, low). We aimed to determine whether turtles selected nest sites based on a range of microhabitat variables comparing maternally selected natural nests to randomly chosen artificial nests. We also compared nest site choice across areas with different levels of human disturbance. Natural nests had less variance in canopy openness and average daily mean and minimum temperature than artificial nests, but microhabitat variables were similar across differing levels of disturbance. Additionally, we experimentally quantified nest predation across a natural to human-disturbed gradient. Nest predation rates were higher in areas with low and intermediate levels of disturbance than in areas with high human disturbance. Overall, these results show that turtles are not adjusting their choices of nest microhabitat when faced with anthropogenic change, suggesting that preserving certain natural microhabitat features will be critical for populations in human-disturbed areas.

  3. Abstract According to the ‘selfish herd’ hypothesis, most seabird species breed colonially so that individuals can decrease their risk of predation by forming compact groups. However, costs and benefits associated with colonial breeding may not be evenly distributed among individuals within a colony. At Adélie penguin colonies, individuals nesting on the periphery of subcolonies (distinct groups of nests) may experience higher rates of nest predation by south polar skuas, and thus the optimal aggregation pattern for Adélie penguins may be within groups that minimize the proportion of edge nests. Nevertheless, some penguins choose to nest solitarily, at significant distances from conspecifics. We tracked 50 of these “solitary-nesting” Adélie penguins at Cape Crozier, a large colony on Ross Island, during the 2021 nesting season and compared their breeding success to individuals nesting within subcolony boundaries. We found that both solitary and subcolony nests successfully raised chicks large enough to join crèches and left unattended by adults. However, chicks from solitary nests exhibited a rate of mortality more than six times higher during the transition from nest brooding/guarding to crèche stage. In the 2022 nesting season, we found that solitary nests which had previously hosted actively breeding penguins were more likely to be re-occupied. Solitary nesting therefore appears to be a less-successful alternative to breeding within subcolonies, but enough individuals could be successful with this approach to maintain the apparently disadvantageous behavior and effectively pioneer previously unused locations, possibly including eventual new colony locations.

  4. Abstract Extra-pair mating is common in avian species and can modulate the strength of sexual selection. Mate searching behavior of female birds may be an important predictor of mating opportunities and extra-pair mating, yet important knowledge is lacking as we have little data on fine-scale movement of females during the peak fertilization period. Accordingly, much is still unknown about whether and how female phenotypes contribute to extra-pair mating. Here, we examined how female space use and female plumage color are associated with extra-pair mating outcomes in wild barn swallows (Hirundo rustica erythrogaster). We tracked 10 females breeding in Colorado, USA with GPS backpack tags for two hours each morning during their fertile period following an experimental nest failure. We then used low-coverage whole-genome sequencing to determine offspring paternity and to quantify extra-pair mating in the removed clutch and the replacement clutch. Plumage and movement did not correlate with changes in paternity between successive clutches, but movement did correlate with paternity in the replacement clutch. Females that spent more time away from the nest had a higher proportion and number of extra-pair offspring in the clutch laid immediately after the tracking period. These results suggest that differences in female space use contribute to differences in extra-pair fertilizations. In contrast to the historic emphasis on male traits, our study highlights female movement behavior as an important variable associated with mating outcomes in natural populations.

Maculation on avian eggshells has the potential to serve as an identity signal, and this information may help females recognize their eggs/nest or reject foreign eggs laid by hetero‐ or conspecific brood parasites. Recognizing eggs could be adaptive in cases where birds nest in dense colonies, as reports of conspecific brood parasitism are over‐represented in colony‐nesting species. We utilized the variation in breeding biology (solitary vs. colonial breeding) and eggshell phenotype in swallows and martins (Hirundinidae) to test for correlated evolution between these traits, while also accounting for nest type, as maculation may camouflage eggs in open‐cup nests. We found that maculated eggs were more likely to be laid by species that breed socially and build open‐cup nests where maculation would be more visible than in dark cavity nests.
