Title: Predicting successful dissemination of a project-based curriculum: Findings from a passion-driven statistics initiative
The purpose of this study was to inform the dissemination of a project-based statistics curriculum by identifying institutional and instructor characteristics that predict its implementation. Data were drawn from pre- and post-workshop surveys completed by 67 instructors attending a one-and-a-half-day professional development workshop. Nearly half of the instructors who intended to implement Passion-Driven Statistics following the workshop employed the project-based curriculum by the end of the first full academic year. Teaching at a private institution and endorsing a larger number of positive adjectives regarding teachers’ likely experiences with the model predicted its actual implementation.  more » « less

    Passion-Driven Statistics is a project-based, introductory curriculum implemented as a course in statistics, research methods, data science, a capstone experience, and a summer research boot camp with students from a wide variety of academic settings. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the curriculum engages students in authentic projects with large, real-world data sets. Passion-Driven Statistics students were more likely to report increased confidence in working with data and increased interest in pursuing advanced statistics course work compared to students from the traditional statistics course (Dierker et al., 2018a). This presentation draws on pre/post data from 67 instructors attending a Passion-Driven Statistics faculty development workshop. Analyses evaluate instructor characteristics, attitudes, and experiences that predict its implementation. Findings show that nearly half of the instructors who reported being likely to implement passion-driven statistics and a quarter of the overall sample employed the project-based curriculum by the end of the first full academic year following the workshop. Those showing this fast uptake were more likely to be female than those who had not yet implemented (87.5% vs. 55.3%), were more likely to hold a Ph.D. (94.1% vs. 59.2%), and were more likely to be employed by a private rather than public institution (76.5% vs. 46.0%). Those showing fast uptake were also more likely to have been previously using statistical software (i.e., SAS, JMP, R, Stata, Python, or SPSS) in their target course (70.6% vs. 40.0%) and to have greater prior experience with project-based skills and fewer post workshop concerns about their likely success. Results from these analyses will guide recommendations for 1) engaging instructors ready to implement innovation in learning and teaching and 2) supporting those instructors requiring additional time, training and skills.     To evaluate the impact of a multidisciplinary, project-based course in introductory statistics, this exploratory study examined learning experiences, feelings of confidence, and interest in future experiences with data for undergraduate students in Ghana, West Africa. Students completed a one-semester, introductory statistics course utilizing the Passion-Driven Statistics curriculum. Results showed more than half of the students put more effort into the course and found the material more challenging compared to other courses, while nearly three-quarters reported interest in one or more follow-up courses. Importantly, students also reported increased confidence in a variety of applied statistical skills. These findings demonstrate the positive impact of a multidisciplinary, project-based curriculum on undergraduate students in Ghana, West Africa and demonstrate the potential for its global portability.

    With support from the National Science Foundation, an evidence-based experimental centric pedagogy (ECP) is being implemented across STEM disciplines at an historically black university. This is the first of its kind, where the ECP is being extended to several STEM disciplines after its successful implementation in electrical engineering to promote motivation and enhance academic achievement of minority students. One of the project objectives is to organize workshops whereby STEM faculty in biology, chemistry, physics, civil engineering, computer science, industrial engineering and transportation systems will learn how to develop and implement ECP as an active learning pedagogy. This paper highlights the strategies used for planning, publicity, implementation, and assessment of the workshop conducted in Summer 2020. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the workshop was held virtually with 360 participants registering globally. The workshop’s focus was developing and implementing inexpensive home-based hands-on learning activities. Workshop assessment revealed that participants expressed positive outcomes, 84% reported that they believe the workshop was a good use of their time and 83% said they plan to implement what they had learned at the workshop in their own practice, affording the participants more opportunities to include home-based hands-on learning in their curriculum. This project seeks not only to increase public scientific literacy, but to also contribute to the development of a diverse, globally competitive STEM workforce.

    Thinking With Algebra (TWA) is a National Science Foundation Project (DUE 2021414) to develop a post-secondary curriculum for intermediate algebra. TWA focuses on six elements that align with building algebraic fluency with conceptual understanding, a mixed review approach, small-group work, and whole-class discussion (Feikes, et al., 2021). Using an equity lens (Oppland-Cordell et al., 2024), TWA is designed for students, including underrepresented students, who need additional mathematical supports at the college level. Seventeen college math instructors attended a workshop on the lessons and pedagogy in order to use TWA in their college courses. Feedback from instructors participating in the TWA first-year faculty workshop indicated that the curriculum was used in many different ways to help prepare students for college algebra and other STEM courses.

Faculty professional development is an important lever for change in supporting instructors to adopt research-based instructional strategies that engage students intellectually, foster learning-supportive attitudes and habits of mind, and strengthen their persistence in mathematics. Yet the literature contains few well-rationalized models for faculty development in higher education. We describe the rationale and design for a model for discipline-based faculty development to support instructional change, and we detail our implementation of this model as applied to intensive workshops on inquiry-based learning (IBL) in college mathematics. These workshops seek to foster post-secondary mathematics instructors’ adoption of IBL, to help them adapt inquiry approaches for their classrooms, and ultimately to increase student learning and persistence in science and mathematics. Based on observed faculty needs, four strands of activity help instructors develop a mental model for an IBL classroom, adapt that model to their teaching context, develop facilitation and task-design skills, and plan an IBL mathematics course. Evaluation data from surveys and observations illustrate participant responses to the workshop and its components. The model has been robust across 15 years of workshops implemented by three generations of workshop leaders and its features make it adaptive, strategic, and practical for other faculty developers.
