Title: Introducing Data Literacy in the Classroom using Sound Exploration Tools
Data literacy is becoming increasingly important for many professions due to the growing reliance on data-driven systems in the workplace. This means that children in school today need to be able to understand and work with data in order to be prepared for their future careers. However, many schools are having difficulty finding good resources for teaching data science. The authors of this paper describe the online tools and a workshop they developed to introduce students to working with data in a hands-on way, using sound and multimodal interaction. The initial feedback from participants indicated that the workshop helped improve their understanding of the practical applications of data and statistical operations.  more » « less

  1. Message from the Organizers Welcome to the first edition of the Workshop on Pattern-based Approaches to NLP in the Age of Deep Learning (Pan-DL)! Our workshop is being organized online on October 17, 2022, in conjunction with the 29th International Conference on Computational Linguistics (COLING). We all know that deep-learning methods have dominated the field of natural language processing in the past decade. However, these approaches usually rely on the availability of high-quality and high- quantity data annotation. Furthermore, the learned models are difficult to interpret and incur substantial technical debt. As a result, these approaches tend to exclude users that lack the necessary machine learning background. In contrast, rule-based methods are easier to deploy and adapt; they support human examination of intermediate representations and reasoning steps; they are more transparent to subject- matter experts; they are amenable to having a human in the loop through intervention, manipulation and incorporation of domain knowledge; and further the resulting systems tend to be lightweight and fast. This workshop focuses on all aspects of rule-based approaches, including their application, representation, and interpretability, as well as their strengths and weaknesses relative to state-of-the-art machine learning approaches. Considering the large number of potential directions in this neuro-symbolic space, we emphasized inclusivity in our workshop. We received 13 papers and accepted 10 for oral presentation. This resulted in an overall acceptance rate of 77%. In addition of the oral presentations of the accepted papers, our workshop includes a keynote talk by Ellen Riloff, who has made crucial contributions to the field of natural language processing, many of which are at the intersection of rule- and neural-based methods. Further, the workshop contains a panel that will discuss the merits and limitations of rules in our neural era. The panelists will be academics with expertise in both neural- and rule-based methods, industry experts that employ these methods for commercial products, government officials in charge of AI funding, organizers of natural language processing evaluations, and subject matter experts that have used rule-based methods for domain-specific applications. We thank Ellen Riloff and the panelists for their important contribution to our workshop! Finally, we are thankful to the members of the program committee for their insightful reviews! We are confident that all submissions have benefited from their expert feedback. Their contribution was a key factor for accepting a diverse and high-quality list of papers, which we hope will make the first edition of the Pan-DL workshop a success, and will motivate many future editions.   2. Message from the Organizers Welcome to the second edition of the Workshop on Pattern-based Approaches to NLP in the Age of Deep Learning (Pan-DL)! Our workshop is being organized in a hybrid format on December 6, 2023, in conjunction with the 2023 Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP). In the past year, the natural language processing (NLP) field (and the world at large!) has been hit by the large language model (LLM) "tsunami." This happened for the right reasons: LLMs perform extremely well in a multitude of NLP tasks, often with minimal training and, perhaps for the first time, have made NLP technology extremely approachable to non-expert users. However, LLMs are not perfect: they are not really explainable, they are not pliable, i.e., they cannot be easily modified to correct any errors observed, and they are not efficient due to the overhead of decoding. In contrast, rule-based methods are more transparent to subject matter experts; they are amenable to having a human in the loop through intervention, manipulation and incorporation of domain knowledge; and further the resulting systems tend to be lightweight and fast. This workshop focuses on all aspects of rule-based approaches, including their application, representation, and interpretability, as well as their strengths and weaknesses relative to state-of-the-art machine learning approaches. Considering the large number of potential directions in this neuro-symbolic space, we emphasized inclusivity in our workshop. We received 19 submissions and accepted 10 for oral presentation. This resulted in an overall acceptance rate of 52%. Our workshop also includes 6 presentations of papers that were accepted in Findings of EMNLP. Further, the workshop contains a panel that will discuss the merits and limitations of rules in the new LLM era. The panelists will be academics with expertise in both neural- and rulebased methods, industry experts that employ these methods for commercial products, and subject matter experts that have used rule-based methods for domain-specific applications.   3. Human-robot interaction is now an established discipline. Dozens of HRI courses exist at universities worldwide, and some institutions even offer degrees in HRI. However, although many students are being taught HRI, there is no agreed-upon curriculum for an introductory HRI course. In this workshop, we aim to reach community consensus on what should be covered in such a course. Through interactive activities like panels, breakout discussions, and syllabus design, workshop participants will explore the many topics and pedagogical approaches for teaching HRI. They will then distill their findings into a single example introductory HRI curriculum. Output from this workshop will include a short paper explaining this curriculum and an example syllabus that can be used and adapted by HRI educators.

In January and April 2021 we held the Workshop on Overcoming Measurement Barriers to Internet Research (WOMBIR) with the goal of understanding challenges in network and security data set collection and sharing. Most workshop attendees provided white papers describing their perspectives, and many participated in short-talks and discussion in two virtual workshops over five days. That discussion produced consensus around several points. First, many aspects of the Internet are characterized by decreasing visibility of important network properties, which is in tension with the Internet's role as critical infrastructure. We discussed three specific research areas that illustrate this tension: security, Internet access; and mobile networking. We discussed visibility challenges at all layers of the networking stack, and the challenge of gathering data and validating inferences. Important data sets require longitudinal (long-term, ongoing) data collection and sharing, support for which is more challenging for Internet research than other fields. We discussed why a combination of technical and policy methods are necessary to safeguard privacy when using or sharing measurement data. Workshop participant proposed several opportunities to accelerate progress, some of which require coordination across government, industry, and academia.

    The 2019 ABET computer science criteria requires that all computing students learn parallel and distributed computing (PDC) as undergraduates, and CS2013 recommends at least fifteen hours of PDC in the undergraduate curriculum. Consequently, many educators look for easy ways to integrate PDC into courses at their institutions. This hands-on workshop introduces Message Passing Interface (MPI) basics in C/C++ and Python using clusters of Raspberry Pis. The Message Passing Interface (MPI) is a multi-language, platform independent, industry-standard library for parallel and distributed computing. Raspberry Pis are an inexpensive and engaging hardware platform for studying PDC as early as the first course. Participants will experience how to teach distributed computing essentials with MPI by means of reusable, effective "parallel patterns", including single program multiple data (SPMD) execution, send-receive message passing, the master-worker pattern, parallel loop patterns, and other common patterns, plus longer "exemplar" programs that use MPI to solve significant applied problems. The workshop includes: (i) personal experience with the Raspberry Pi (clusters provided for workshop use); (ii) assembly of Beowulf clusters of Raspberry Pis quickly in the classroom; (iii) self-paced hands-on experimentation with the working MPI programs; and (iv) a discussion of how these may be used to achieve the goals of CS2013 and ABET. No prior experience with MPI, PDC, or the Raspberry Pi is expected. All materials from this workshop will be freely available from CSinParallel.org; participants should bring a laptop to access these materials.
