We describe hydrogen bonds ( i.e. , N + –H⋯N) in combination with cation⋯π interactions to enable a cascade-like [2 + 2] photodimerization of 4-stilbazole in a salt cocrystal. A four-component crystal assembly is composed of photoactive pyridinium ion pair 4-stilbzH + ( 4-stilbz = trans -1-(4-pyridyl)-2-(phenyl)ethylene) and photostable molecule pair 4-stilbz . UV irradiation gives rctt -1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)-3,4-bis(phenyl)cyclobutane ( 4-pyr-ph-cb ) in quantitative yield. An intermediate structure 2 ( 4-stilbz )·( 4-pyr-ph-cb )2H + is isolated that undergoes a partial single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation. The single-crystal X-ray data provides a snapshot of movements in the salt cocrystal in the course of the photodimerization.

A mixed phosphine sulfide/selenide structure as an instructional example for how to evaluate the quality of a model
This paper compares variations on a structure model derived from an X-ray diffraction data set from a solid solution of chalcogenide derivatives of cis -1,2-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)ethylene, namely, 1,2-(ethene-1,2-diyl)bis(diphenylphoshpine sulfide/selenide), C 26 H 22 P 2 S 1.13 Se 0.87 . A sequence of processes are presented to ascertain the composition of the crystal, along with strategies for which aspects of the model to inspect to ensure a chemically and crystallographically realistic structure. Criteria include mis-matches between F obs 2 and F calc 2 , plots of | F obs | vs | F calc |, residual electron density, checkCIF alerts, pitfalls of the OMIT command used to suppress ill-fitting data, comparative size of displacement ellipsoids, and critical inspection of interatomic distances. Since the structure is quite small, solves easily, and presents a number of readily expressible refinement concepts, we feel that it would make a straightforward and concise instructional piece for students learning how to determine if their model provides the best fit for the data and show students how to critically assess their structures.

We present a series of new dopants based on a bicyclcic guanidine-type structure, 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene ( TBD ), for organic semiconductors. A series of TBD derivatives that were alkylated at the 7-position were synthesized and their physical properties were determined. These stable dopants were shown to be effective n-type dopants for [6,6]-phenyl- C 61 -butyric acid methyl ester (PC 61 BM), poly{[ N , N ′-bis(2-octyldodecyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]- alt -5,5′-(2,2′-bithiophene)} (P(NDI2OD-T2)) and 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3- d :2′,3′- d ′]- s -indaceno[1,2- b :5,6- b ′]dithiophene (ITIC). Films of PC 61 BM doped with 10 mol% of a dimeric derivative of TBD had electrical conductivities of 0.065 S cm −1 . The utility of the dopants was further shown by doping electron transport layers of PC 61 BM with 2TBD-C10 for methyl ammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) solar cells leading to improved fill factors and PCEs relative to undoped ETLs.more » « less

Brown, Ryan; Antink-Meyer, Allison (Ed.)Current education reforms call for engaging students in learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in an integrative way. This critical case study of one fourth grade teacher investigated the use of educational robots (ER) not only for teaching coding, but as an instructional support in teaching mathematical concepts. To support teachers in teaching coding in an integrative and logical manner, our team developed the Collective Argumentation Learning and Coding (CALC) approach. The CALC approach consists of three elements: choice of task, coding content, and teacher support for argumentation. After a cohort of elementary teachers completed a professional development course, we followed them into their classrooms to support and document implementation of the CALC approach. Data for this case consisted of video recordings of two lessons, a Pre-interview, and Post-interview after each lesson. Research questions included: How does an elementary teacher use the CALC approach (integrative STEM approach) to teach mathematics concepts with ER? What are the teacher’s perspectives towards teaching mathematics with ER using an integrative STEM approach? Results from this critical case provide evidence that teachers can successfully integrate ER into the mathematics curriculum without losing coherence of mathematics topics and while remaining sensitive to students’ needs.more » « less

The potential of pyrimidines to serve as ditopic halogen-bond acceptors is explored. The halogen-bonded cocrystals formed from solutions of either 5,5′-bipyrimidine (C 8 H 6 N 4 ) or 1,2-bis(pyrimidin-5-yl)ethyne (C 10 H 6 N 4 ) and 2 molar equivalents of 1,3-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (C 6 F 4 I 2 ) have a 1:1 composition. Each pyrimidine moiety acts as a single halogen-bond acceptor and the bipyrimidines act as ditopic halogen-bond acceptors. In contrast, the activated pyrimidines 2- and 5-{[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]ethynyl}pyrimidine (C 14 H 13 N 3 ) are ditopic halogen-bond acceptors, and 1:1 halogen-bonded cocrystals are formed from 1:1 mixtures of each of the activated pyrimidines and either 1,2- or 1,3-diiodotetrafluorobenzene. A 1:1 cocrystal was also formed between 2-{[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]ethynyl}pyrimidine and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene, while a 2:1 cocrystal was formed between 5-{[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]ethynyl}pyrimidine and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene.more » « less

The molecular tetravalent oxidation state for praseodymium is observed in solution via oxidation of the anionic trivalent precursor [K][Pr 3+ (NP(1,2-bis- t Bu-diamidoethane)(NEt 2 )) 4 ] (1-Pr(NP*)) with AgI at −35 °C. The Pr 4+ complex is characterized in solution via cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR electronic absorption spectroscopy, and EPR spectroscopy. Electrochemical analyses of [K][Ln 3+ (NP(1,2-bis- t Bu-diamidoethane)(NEt 2 )) 4 ] (Ln = Nd and Dy) by cyclic voltammetry are reported and, in conjunction with theoretical modeling of electronic structure and oxidation potential, are indicative of principal ligand oxidations in contrast to the metal-centered oxidation observed for 1-Pr(NP*). The identification of a tetravalent praseodymium complex in in situ UV-vis and EPR experiments is further validated by theoretical modeling of the redox chemistry and the UV-vis spectrum. The latter study was performed by extended multistate pair-density functional theory (XMS-PDFT) and implicates a multiconfigurational ground state for the tetravalent praseodymium complex.more » « less
