This study focuses on the informal learning methods that take place in an 8-day structured summer camp. The Appalachian GeoSTEMCamp infused outdoor adventure recreation with geology using an informal-formal learning methodology. The camp was designed to instruct middle school/high school students on earth and environmental sciences in a way that is challenging and interesting, promoting critical and creative thinking. The data adds to a growing body of literature suggesting informal education has an established place in STEM education.

Outward Bound and outdoor adventure education: A scoping review, 1995-2019
Outdoor adventure education (OAE) programming is often referenced as an effective intervention that encourages a wide array of outcomes in participants such as increased confidence, independence, and communication skills. However, as outdoor adventure education continues to increase globally, what does the academic literature say about the outcomes related to these programs? Hattie, Marsh, Neill, and Richards (1997) conducted the last major review of program efficacy in this realm. This updated scoping review, largely following PRISMA guidelines (Tricco et al., 2018), aims to summarize the academic literature on one of the primary outdoor adventure education providers internationally, Outward Bound (OB). Fifty-four studies, published between 1995 and 2019, have been summarized in this review. Utilizing Outward Bound International’s (OBI) framework of “people”, “place”, and “process”, themes and gaps in the literature are explored. Specifically, the OB literature has progressed since 1995 in demonstrating social and emotional outcomes in a variety of settings, a better understanding of the nature of effective programming, and further documenting the role the instructor plays in the learning experience. Recommendations are provided on developing more rigorous methodologies for future research, understanding the role of the physical environment in the learning experience, and utilizing theoretical approaches to integrate outdoor adventure education into broader academic realms.

Digital learning games can help address gender disparities in math by promoting better learning experiences and outcomes for girls. However, there is a need for more research to understand why some digital learning games might be especially effective for girls studying mathematics. In this study, we assess two possible pathways: that girls might benefit from math games because they reduce the anxiety and evaluation apprehension that girls are more likely to experience when doing math; and that girls might benefit from math games when they enjoy the narrative and thus experience greater engagement. To evaluate these pathways, our work uses multiple dimensions of gender (e.g., gender identity and gender-typed interests, activities, and traits) and surveys of affective experiences to examine the impact of three learning systems with identical learning content: a digital learning game, Decimal Point, that has consistently led to better learning for girls over boys; a new masculine-typed game, Ocean Adventure, developed based on a survey of over 300 students; and a conventional tutoring system. We predicted that girls and students with stronger feminine-typed characteristics would experience less math anxiety in both Decimal Point and Ocean Adventure compared to the tutor. We also predicted that girls and students with stronger feminine-typed characteristics would experience greater engagement and learning with Decimal Point while boys and students with stronger masculine-typed characteristics would experience greater engagement and learning with Ocean Adventure. Consistent with predictions, students with stronger feminine-typed characteristics experienced less anxiety and evaluation apprehension in both games compared to the tutor. This suggests that math learning games may provide a way to address these negative affective experiences. In terms of our measures of engagement, we found that students with stronger masculine-typed characteristics reported greater experience of mastery in the masculine Ocean Adventure; however, this was the only indicator that the more masculine narrative of Ocean Adventure led to different experiences based on gender. This suggests that narrative alone may not have a strong enough effect on students based on gender, especially when other game features are kept constant. Contrary to our predictions, there were no effects of gender identity or condition on learning outcomes, although both masculine-typed and feminine-typed characteristics were negatively associated with learning. Overall, these results point to the value of a multi-dimensional model of gender in assessing learning with a game, the important role learning games can have in reducing math anxiety and evaluation apprehension for girls and students with feminine-typed characteristics, and the nuanced effects of game narratives on experiences with game-based learning.more » « less

This research paper presents a comprehensive analysis of existing literature in the domain of Engineering education, with a distinct focus on Engineering Technology (ET) education. The overarching objective is to review the literature around the experiences, identity development and outcomes of students transitioning from community colleges to 4-year institutions for an ET degree (upper two-year program) and provide guidelines for the engineering education research community towards future studies about this important body of student population. Relying on insights derived from a wide array of empirical studies, this review underscores the pivotal role of institutional support in bolstering these students’ academic trajectory. The increasing trend of students moving between institutions in pursuit of engineering education, has led to a profound need for understanding the multi-dimensional challenges they grapple with. In the realm of ET, these challenges magnify, with transfer students navigating both academic intricacies like curriculum misalignment and socio-cultural dynamics such as integration into new academic communities. Furthermore, the journey of identity development, quintessential for their retention and success in the new environment, is portrayed as an intricate process, influenced by diverse elements from their previous experiences to the new institutional ethos. First, ET transfer students are entangled in a web of academic and non-academic hurdles. These range from technicalities like curriculum harmonization to softer aspects related to socio-cultural integration and identity reformation. The studies discussed within this review provide robust evidence addressing these multifaceted challenges. Second, the significance of identity development, pivotal for their integration, performance, and overall well-being, emerges as a complex interplay of myriad factors, both internal and external. Despite the rich insights from the extant literature, the authors have identified the following areas that require further exploration to benefit the literature in this field: • Emphasis on empirical studies that delve into ET transfer students' psychological and emotional well-being. While the literature emphasizes the nuanced journey of identity development, there is potential merit in understanding how these transitions and challenges influence mental health outcomes, ensuring comprehensive institutional support. • An imperative for empirical pursuits targeting the identity evolution stages of ET transfer students, aiming to decode the driving forces and impediments in this sphere. • A probe into the effectiveness of recently adopted institutional mandates or initiatives designed to elevate the transfer odyssey, spotlighting potential lasting ramifications. In steering the larger academic community, this review advocates for a deeper immersion into the aforementioned realms, with the aspiration that the resultant knowledge amplifies the scholastic trajectories of ET transfer students and enriches their comprehensive evolution within the engineering spectrum.more » « less

Outdoor leisure experiences may represent an understudied yet effective pathway to promote connectedness to nature for urban park visitors. In contrast to outdoor recreation, this critical essay argues outdoor leisure more heavily emphasizes eudaimonic sentiments and intrinsic motivation in comparison with the goal-oriented and hedonic nature of outdoor recreation. It is further argued that two specific social psychological constructs, awe and solitude, may be especially useful in promoting leisure experiences in urban outdoor spaces. Relevant philosophical and social psychological literature is reviewed and synthesized to outline how land managers and environmental educators may facilitate experiences of awe and solitude to better promote contexts for experiencing outdoor leisure in urban parks. Specifically, reviewed literature suggests that utilizing the recreation opportunity spectrum framework and co-creative processes may be an effective path forward in better supporting urban park environments that are conducive to awe, solitude, and leisure. The review and synthesis of this research may ultimately guide environmental educators, land managers, and researchers in ways to more effectively support connectedness to nature via outdoor leisure experiences as an outcome for visitors to outdoor urban spaces.more » « less

Metacognition and self-regulation are important skills for successful learning and have been discussed and researched extensively in the general education literature for several decades. More recently, there has been growing interest in understanding how metacognitive and self-regulatory skills contribute to student success in the context of computing education. This paper presents a thorough systematic review of metacognition and self-regulation work in the context of computer programming and an in-depth discussion of the theories that have been leveraged in some way. We also discuss several prominent metacognitive and self-regulation theories from the literature outside of computing education – for example, from psychology and education – that have yet to be applied in the context of programming education. In our investigation, we built a comprehensive corpus of papers on metacognition and self-regulation in programming education, and then employed backward snowballing to provide a deeper examination of foundational theories from outside computing education, some of which have been explored in programming education, and others that have yet to be but hold much promise. In addition, we make new observations about the way these theories are used by the computing education community, and present recommendations on how metacognition and self-regulation can help inform programming education in the future. In particular, we discuss exemplars of studies that have used existing theories to support their design and discussion of results as well as studies that have proposed their own metacognitive theories in the context of programming education. Readers will also find the article a useful resource for helping students in programming courses develop effective strategies for metacognition and self-regulation.more » « less
