Title: Simulations and Teacher Professional Development: Approaches to Cross-Validation of Culturally Responsive Teaching Strategies
o improve teaching practices that encourage more culturally responsiveness to the diversity of classrooms, a simulated teaching program is being implemented to provide reflective feedback intended to reduce implicit biases that may exist. This birds-of-a-feather session is intended to explore ways to validate the use of artificial intelligence in the simulated teaching environment. Pilot data have been collected from year one of a three-year project and results indicate improvement in strategies to teach in a culturally responsive manner. Pre-post survey data as well as simulation-gathered data are being used to validate the simulator through changes in teachers’ perceptions.  more » « less

  1. Simulated teaching environments have been used for more than two decades and are likely to continue to expand to meet the demands of teacher development programs. In this study, the self-reported changes in culturally-responsive teaching perceptions of ten classroom teachers serving more than six hundred students are reported. This paper includes first year findings from a program designed to use artificial-intelligence (AI) based algorithms to reduce implicit bias in teaching. Findings from this study include significant pre-post increases for self-efficacy related to culturally responsive teaching as well as instructional self-efficacy. These findings add credibility to the contention that a key innovation of using simulation programs for teacher professional development is that it provides teachers and teacher trainees many learning trials with simulated students, thereby increasing teacher confidence and competence, and which in turn will improve student learning. Findings set the stage for measuring the impact on student perceptions of learning and cultural engagement intended to support teachers in recognizing and ameliorating their own implicit biases.

    Bias reduction in teaching practices is a key foundation for enabling future leaders of society to achieve their highest innate and positively nurtured potential. The COVID-19 Pandemic has highlighted disparities in learning and emphasized the importance of socio-emotional stability for the long-term well-being of students and teachers. This paper presents a tool for educators that is scalable for developing equitable, culturally responsive teaching practices through implementation in a simulated teaching environment that is adaptive, interactive and augmented. Research questions to be studied during a three-year project recently funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation are described and baseline statistics gathered from pretest surveys among the first year teacher participants are presented.

  3. This WIP presentation is intended to share and gather feedback on the development of an observation protocol for K-12 integrated STEM instruction, the STEM-OP. Specifically, the STEM-OP is being developed for use in K-12 science and/or engineering settings where integrated STEM instruction takes place. While the importance of integrated STEM education is established through national policy documents, there remains disagreement on models and effective approaches for integrated STEM instruction. Our broad definition of integrated STEM includes the use of two or more STEM disciplines to solve a real-world problem or design challenge that supports student development of 21st century skills. This issue is confounded by the lack of observation protocols sensitive to integrated STEM teaching and learning that can be used to inform research of the effectiveness of new models and strategies. Existing instruments most commonly used by researchers, such as the Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP), were designed prior to the development of the Next Generation Science Standards and the integration of engineering into science standards. These instruments were also designed for use in reform-based science classrooms, not engineering or integrated STEM learning environments. While engineering-focused observation protocols do exist for K-12 classrooms, they do not evaluate beyond an engineering focus, making them limited tools to evaluate integrated STEM instruction. In order to facilitate the implementation of integrated STEM in K-12 classrooms and the development of the nascent integrated STEM education literature, our research team is developing a new integrated STEM observation protocol for use in K-12 science and engineering classrooms. This valid and reliable instrument will be designed for use in a variety of educational contexts and by different education stakeholders to increase the quality of K-12 STEM education. At the end of this project, the STEM-OP will be made available through an online platform that will include an embedded training program to facilitate its broad use. In the first year of this four-year project, we are working on the initial development of the STEM-OP through video analysis and exploratory factor analysis. We are utilizing existing classroom video from a previous project with approximately 2,000 unique classroom videos representing a variety of grade levels (4-9), science content (life, earth, and physical science), engineering design challenges, and school demographics (urban, suburban). The development of the STEM-OP is guided by published frameworks that focus on providing quality K-12 integrated STEM and engineering education, such as the Framework for Quality K-12 Engineering Education. Our anticipated results at the time the ASEE meeting will include a review of our item development process and finalized items included on the draft STEM-OP. Additionally, we anticipate being able to share findings from the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) on our video-coded data, which will identify distinct instructional dimensions responsible for integrated STEM instruction. We value the opportunity to gather feedback from the engineering education community as the integration of engineering design and practices is integral to quality integrated STEM instruction.

Mathematical modeling (MM) - a cyclical process that involves using mathematics to make-sense of and analyze relevant, real-world situations - has the potential to advance equity and challenge spaces of marginalization in the elementary mathematics classroom. When informed by culturally responsive teaching practices, MM creates opportunities to center the knowledge and experiences that students from diverse racial, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds bring to the classroom as valuable resources to support learning and inform action. It can disrupt power and status hierarchies in the classroom that contribute to structural and ideological marginalization. This paper describes ways teachers connected their teaching of MM with key components of a culturally responsive mathematics teaching framework. Analysis synthesizes data from an innovative, research-based professional development for elementary teachers to support teacher learning of equity centered, culturally responsive MM instruction. Data sources include end of year teacher interviews, and professional development discussions from 19 teachers at four geographically, racially, and culturally diverse sites. Findings focus on how teachers connected their teaching of MM with key dimensions of culturally responsive mathematics teaching, and affordances and challenges related to resisting ideological and structural forms of marginalization.

  5. New technologies are continually being placed in the ocean, constantly collecting ocean data in real-time. As a result, Data Literacy is now a necessary learning goal for supporting students' Ocean Literacy. The newest ships in the U.S. Academic Research Fleet, the Regional Class Research Vessels (RCRVs), are being built with the aim of supporting data literacy through outreach and education, with aid from a forthcoming real-time data portal. To understand how the RCRV’s outreach and education initiatives can best support data and ocean literacy, while also facilitating intentional engagement with minoritized populations, a three-phase research strategy was conducted over three years. The objective was to determine promising practices in data literacy education and shipboard outreach that are also culturally responsive. The first phase of the research interviewed experts in the fields of teaching, data literacy, shipboard education, and community engagement in order to generate recommendations. The second phase was an assessment of a three-day data literacy high-school curriculum utilizing research vessel data. The third phase examined the success of potential culturally responsive data literacy curricular frameworks and teaching practices in an afterschool pilot program for Latinx youth. The research determined that in a world where students have never ending access to data, data literacy education must be scaffolded throughout a student's life. Data used in education must be contextual and relatable and the best tools for data literacy learning are designed for teachers and students. As new knowledge is being generated about the ocean through new technologies continually collecting data, ocean literacy can no longer exist without data literacy.
