Male baboons mature more slowly than females, reaching full adult maturity at around 10-12 years of age. After the onset of puberty at 5-7 years, the sub-adult period lasts 3-5 years while the male continues to grow, though there is considerable variation between individuals. Here, we present data on the behavioral changes that accompany the physical maturation of male olive baboons (Papio anubis) as they transition through each developmental stage. This research was conducted on a fully habituated wild troop at the Uaso Ngiro Baboon Project in Laikipia, Kenya. We use long-term grooming data (2018-2023) to show that males have significantly more grooming partners as they get older (n=48, p<.001). We then use behavioral data collected in June and July 2023 to compare the social behaviors of males from three developmental stages: juveniles (n=5), males who recently became sub-adults (n=4), and males who have been sub-adults for over a year (n=5). The differences between these three groups show the effect of puberty on behavior: juveniles were observed in social play significantly more often than sub-adults (p=.006), while males who recently underwent puberty tended to groom less often than either juveniles or older sub-adults (p=.091). Our focal data also revealed variation in the age at which males reached each developmental stage. Further research is needed to determine causes and consequences of the variation in age at puberty and the potential long-term consequences of this variation on the males’ social behavior.

The development of sex differences in play in wild white‐faced capuchins ( Cebus capucinus )
Abstract Many mammalian species display sex differences in the frequency of play behavior, yet the animal literature includes few longitudinal studies of play, which are important for understanding the developmental timing of sex differences and the evolutionary functions of play. We analyzed social play, solitary play, and grooming using an 18‐year data set on 38 wild white‐faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus) followed since infancy. Rates of each behavior were measured as the proportion of point samples taken during focal follows in which the individual engaged in each behavior. To determine sex differences in these rates, we ran a series of generalized linear mixed models, considering both linear and quadratic effects of age, and chose the optimal model for each of the three behavioral outcomes based on information criteria. Rates of both social play and solitary play decreased with age, with the exception of social play in males, which increased in the early juvenile period before decreasing. Male and female capuchins had different developmental patterns of social play, with males playing more than females during most of the juvenile period, but they did not display meaningful sex differences in solitary play rates. Additionally, males and females had different patterns of grooming over the lifespan: males participated in grooming at low rates throughout their lives, while adult females participated in grooming at much higher rates, peaking around age 11 years before declining. We suggest that male and female white‐faced capuchins may adopt alternative social bonding strategies, including different developmental timing and different behaviors (social play for males vs. grooming for females). Our results were consistent with two functional hypotheses of play, the practice and bonding hypotheses. This study demonstrates that play behavior may be critical for the development of sex‐specific social strategies and emphasizes the importance of developmental perspectives on social behaviors.

Introduction Dominance relationships in which females dominate males are rare among mammals. Mechanistic hypotheses explaining the occurrence of female dominance suggest that females dominate males because (1) they are intrinsically more aggressive or less submissive than males, and/or (2) they have access to more social support than males. Methods Here, we examine the determinants of female dominance across ontogenetic development in spotted hyenas ( Crocuta crocuta ) using 30 years of detailed behavioral observations from the Mara Hyena Project to evaluate these two hypotheses. Results Among adult hyenas, we find that females spontaneously aggress at higher rates than males, whereas males spontaneously submit at higher rates than females. Once an aggressive interaction has been initiated, adult females are more likely than immigrant males to elicit submission from members of the opposite sex, and both adult natal and immigrant males are more likely than adult females to offer submission in response to an aggressive act. We also find that adult male aggressors are more likely to receive social support than are adult female aggressors, and that both adult natal and immigrant males are 2–3 times more likely to receive support when attacking a female than when attacking another male. Across all age classes, females are more likely than males to be targets of aggressive acts that occur with support. Further, receiving social support does slightly help immigrant males elicit submission from adult females compared to immigrant males acting alone, and it also helps females elicit submission from other females. However, adult females can dominate immigrant males with or without support far more often than immigrant males can dominate females, even when the immigrants are supported against females. Discussion Overall, we find evidence for both mechanisms hypothesized to mediate female dominance in this species: (1) male and female hyenas clearly differ in their aggressive and submissive tendencies, and (2) realized social support plays an important role in shaping dominance relationships within a clan. Nevertheless, our results suggest that social support alone cannot explain sex-biased dominance in spotted hyenas. Although realized social support can certainly influence fight outcomes among females, adult females can easily dominate immigrant males without any support at all.more » « less

In an effort to understand orangutan sociality and the benefits of socializing for a semi-solitary ape, we explore the social lives of the most gregarious orangutan age-sex class - adolescent females. From 1994-2016 adolescent females in Gunung Palung National Park had a social encounter on 50% of their follow days, spending 31% of their time in the company of others. Adolescent females were responsible for initiating social parties (coming within 50 meters) with other age-sex classes 86% of the time. Once they were in a social party, the percentage of approaches (decreases in distance between individuals) performed by adolescent females was significantly predicted by the age-sex class of their social partner (F=4.086, p=0.02). Adolescent females performed most of the approaches when they associated with adult females (70%), while approaches were more equal when they associated with flanged males (46% performed by adolescent females) or unflanged males (56% performed by adolescent females). These findings, in combination with higher rates of agonistic interactions between adolescent and adult females and higher rates of affiliative behaviors between adolescent females and unflanged males, indicate that adolescent females actively seek social opportunities with all age-sex classes, but the benefits and risks associated with socializing vary based on the age-sex of their social partners. We argue that sociality is important during adolescence for female orangutans because they must establish themselves in the social landscape, and must seek social learning opportunities. Finally, we consider the adaptive significance of meaningful social bonds for a semi-solitary, sexually coercive ape.more » « less

Peri-adolescence is a critical developmental stage marked by profound changes in the valence of social interactions with parents and peers. We hypothesized that the oxytocin (OXT) and vasopressin (AVP) systems, known for influencing social behavior, would be involved in the maintenance and breaking of bonding behavior expressed by very early peri-adolescent males and females. In rodents, OXT is associated with mother–pup bonding and may promote social attachment to members of the natal territory. AVP, on the other hand, can act in contrasting ways to OXT and has been associated with aggression and territoriality. Specifically, we predicted that in peri-adolescent male and female juveniles of the biparental and territorial California mouse (Peromyscus californicus), a) OXT would increase the social preferences for the parents over unfamiliar age-matched peers (one male and one female), and b) AVP would break the parent-offspring bond and either increase time in the neutral chamber and/or approach to their unfamiliar and novel peers. We examined anxiety and exploratory behavior using an elevated plus maze and a novel object task as a control. Peri-adolescent mice were administered an acute intranasal (IN) treatment of 0.5 IU/kg IN AVP, 0.5 IU/kg IN OXT, or saline control; five minutes later, the behavioral tests were conducted. As predicted, we found that IN OXT enhanced social preference for parents; however, this was only in male and not female peri-adolescent mice. IN AVP did not influence social preference in either sex. These effects appear specific to social behavior and not anxiety, as neither IN OXT nor AVP influenced behavior during the elevated plus maze or novel object tasks. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence indicating that OXT may play a role in promoting peri-adolescent social preferences for parents and delaying weaning in males.more » « less

Research on sex biases in longevity in mammals often assumes that male investment in competition results in a female survival advantage that is constant throughout life. We use 35 years of longitudinal data on 1003 wild bottlenose dolphins ( Tursiops aduncus ) to examine age-specific mortality, demonstrating a time-varying effect of sex on mortality hazard over the five-decade lifespan of a social mammal. Males are at higher risk of mortality than females during the juvenile period, but the gap between male and female mortality hazard closes in the mid-teens, coincident with the onset of female reproduction. Female mortality hazard is non-significantly higher than male mortality hazard in adulthood, resulting in a moderate male bias in the oldest age class. Bottlenose dolphins have an intensely male-competitive mating system, and juvenile male mortality has been linked to social competition. Contrary to predictions from sexual selection theory, however, male–male competition does not result in sustained male-biased mortality. As female dolphins experience high costs of sexual coercion in addition to long and energetically expensive periods of gestation and lactation, this suggests that substantial female investment in reproduction can elevate female mortality risk and impact sex biases in lifespan.more » « less
